"You're right Red!" DJ replied. "Let's go! North, can you keep an eye out for that guy? He's around here somewhere..." DJ then remembered the strange white flash he's seen only a few seconds before. Maybe... "I think I know which way to go!" Turning in the direction of where he'd seen the flash, he dashed off.

 

"DJ!" Vinyl cried. "Wait! What makes you so sure that's the right way?"

 

DJ grinned. "I just have a hunch!"

 

Sighing, Vinyl giggled. "What am I going to do with you?" she asked, before following close behind.

 

"Umm... Eep!" Chronos blurted as two of the group ran off. The others would soon follow. "Wait for me!"

Clover galloped after DJ and Vinyl. The wards would keep up around the group, so it was important that nopony be left behind and outside their protection. She remembered what Princess Celestia had told her about alicorn magic being far stronger than unicorn magic, and hoped that their attacker was a unicorn so that she could try this out.

"As ye wish..." he said, looking around as they moved, Midnatt keeping her wing onto his back, seeming to follow his movements closely.

"I believe we are going the right way, I saw something in this direction as well." he said, still looking around, getting used to the smaller movements of bugs and such common things in the jungle.

"I'm glad you saw it too, North!" DJ replied as the progresses through the jungle. "I was acting on the hunch that I wasn't imagining things, but if you saw it too, then I'm a lot surer we're going the right way! Now I just wish I'd brought a sword with me! While hoof-to-hoof fighting isn't too bad for me, I'd still rather face a sword with a sword!"

 

DJ hoped they wouldn't get surprised again like that. At least with Clover's ward, they'd be ready next time anything attacked them...

"You've brought us through worse with only your words and your heart Captain. Leave the swordplay to me." Steel said. He confidently brandished his twin, gleaming blades. "When we find this fleeing cad, I will put his metal to the test. See what kind of pony he truly is when his shadows can no longer protect him." Steel adjusted his hat to cast a more intimidating visage.

"Thanks Steel!" DJ replied with a smile. "I have no doubt that you'll be more than strong enough to defeat this guy!" He chuckled. "You know, that hat of yours is pretty awesome!" he remarked. "Makes you look even more of a gentlepony!" DJ wished he still had his own tricorn hat. He seemed to lose a lot of his belongings when he was fighting evil...

Reminded of the incident with the python, Sterling didn't want to go back into the jungles again to die from another venomous creature. If the python didn't take him in, another probably would... Feeling a sense of courage, Sterling replied to Blue Note with assertiveness,

 

"Well I'd much rather be taking the risk by going into what seems like a friendly village over having to face the jungles only to be killed by something else! Besides, I think Princess Celestia told us to find a zebra village, and this looks like that to me! So I say we head in!" With determination, Sterling now trotted to the village, hoping that he wasn't making the most fatal mistake of his life...

"Okay," Blue Note said. She looked around the village, and noticed the two of them were attracting looks. They weren't hostile stares, thankfully, but it was an odd experience sticking out like that. Was this what it felt like to be a zebra in Manehatten? "I think we should ask somepony if they've seen our friends." 

 

A few zebras were around outside, so she decided to take a chance. "Hello," she said. "My friend and I were looking for our group, and we think they may be around here. Has a group of ponies passed through here, per chance?"

The zebra nodded. "Ya, there was a group of ponies passing by not long ago. They asked about Callaloo, before going off to see him. After the commotion a few minutes ago, they be setting off into de jungle. I don't know if they will be coming back..." THE zebra shrugged sadly, shaking his head a little.

The zebra's words brought Blue Note's anxiety to a new high for the day. What was happening? And what else was out there in that jungle? Blue Note forced herself to sound calm. "Why don't you think they'll be coming back?" The devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Still, she was unsure if she and Sterling would be able to successfully find the group, and even then, how much of a chance did they have?

Sterling arrived at the village, worriedthat he made the worst decision of his life. But when Blue Note kindly asked one of the zebras about their company, the zebra stated that he had seen the group that they were mentioning! And that they were on their way to not coming back... Wait what was that supposed to mean??

 

"Wait, what do you mean by not coming back?! Are our friends in danger?!" Sterling exclaimed in fear, wondering about all the worst case scenarios that would come to them as well as his friends...

"Oh!" the zebra noticed he'd said something that had made the situation a lot more worrying. "Well..." He scratched the back of his head awkwardly. "They volunteered to be tracking down and capturing a dangerous assassin who wants to kill our mayor. A lot of Mayor Deepwood's bodyguards be injured or dead, being cut to ribbons by dat evil pony! He be very dangerous, so I do not know they be coming back..."

"Assassin," Blue Note repeated blankly. She played the zebra's words over again in her head, until the meaning finally stuck. "What are we going to do?" She turned to Sterling. "How are we going to find them while simultaneously avoiding an assassin, never mind pythons?" There had to be a way out of this, but how would she know what to do? She could barely grip a dagger, and her stun spell would be useless if she couldn't see the pony she needed to run away from. Why wasn't her magic more useful?

 

"Magic. That's it!" She and Sterling were both unicorns, so they might as well use it. "What if we send them a signal, like a beam of light? I remember learning a spell for that back in school."

Sterling looked at Blue Note with a blank face, after having heard about the assassin that was lurking around the jungles... What were they to do with the assassin... And the pythons... and the prickly, poisonous plants... And dying without Evening by his side... What was he to do, what was he to do... He didn't even notice Blue Note and Calalloo talking to each other about a plan to reunite with the others as his face continued to stay blank and his mind filled with fear...

"Hmm... While that be a good idea," Callaloo replied. "I do not know if it be working... You see, de canopy is thick in many places in de jungle, and your friends may not be seeing the light... They also most likely be going deeper into jungle, and might not be facing it anyway." He paused, thinking. "It will be tough finding your friends, and even if you go in, far harder to come out..."

"Sterling? Do you think that would work?" Blue Note asked. "I think both of our magics should be enough. Do you know the spell?" She thought that the two of them should be enough to get a visible signal. "I hope they'll be able to send a signal back." This wouldn't actually afford then safety in getting to their party, but at least it would be something.

Sterling still looked on blankly towards the jungles they just exited from. But when Blue Note finally called his name once more, Sterling shook his head out of his worrying fantasies and looked back to Blue Note. He replied, unsure of what Blue Note was doing since he was disoriented from all that he learned just now.

 

"Ummm... I think so?" Sterling replied rather clumsily, hoping that at the very least, Blue Note wouldn't ravage him for not paying attention...

Callaloo's words caused Blue Note to come to a pause. "Do you think we should still try it?" she asked Sterling. "Our options are fairly limited here. What spells would work?" Most of the spells she knew were musical in nature, aside from self-defense spells and spells she learned in her applied magic class. "Maybe a sound signal would work. You're a musician, right?" she looked at Sterling. "Do you know any musical spells? I could try to project a song to them; though I don't know if they'd recognize it, or even have a way too respond... Not to mention the assassin might hear it too." The thought of going out into the jungle unprepared and unknowing made her sick. There was safety in numbers, and she already felt too vulnerable in the middle of this village. There did not seem to be any safe options.

"Hmm... I do be thinking that could work for you!" Callaloo replied. "With sounds, it doesn't matter if de trees don't let you see!" He chuckled. "It will need to be being very loud though. We do not know how far into the jungle they be. When they are out dere, I doubt de assassin will come for you though! He will be focused on your friends..."

He looked at the group from afar and chuckled softly. His plan worked! They walked straight past it's lair. NightStrike had been as silent as possible to not disturb the bear lurking within, but this particular typpe of bear became very very grumpy when somebody awoke it from it's sleep. And that was exactly what the group just did.

 

Roaring loudly the beast stormed from it's lair towards the group intending on stomping the first pony it saw into the ground!

 

(OOC: You can control the bear and fight it if you want, just don't kill it off too quick. Also it doesn't have to be killed, you can also just scare it off)

 

Quickly NightStrike galloped away.

DJ heard a loud roar coming from just behind them. Turning, he suddenly froze as he noticed the huge bear roaring towards them. "Oh.... You have got to be kidding me!" he cried. A bear was the last thing they needed at this point in time. Acting quickly, DJ sprinted in front of Vinyl, ready to protect his marefriend from this beast. "Keep behind me Vi! This doesn't look friendly!"

 

As soon as he noticed the bear, Chronos instinctively fled from the scene, taking cover behind a nearby tree. Unlike the arrow from earlier, this beast was far more likely not to miss!

"Bear! Stay back everypony!" Steel saw the beast rushing toward his friends. He drew his blades and held them forward of his body. He waved the polished metal of his weapon so that the flash would go into the bear's face.

 

"Come on, come on, come on." He was baiting the beast to single him out so his friend's could get away.

She was in no doubt that the bear attack was down to the assassin; why else would the bear attack just as they were hunting him down?

The bear took the bait, it came at Steel with it's heavy gait. The swordpony smiled, with one swift swipe he would end this threa-

Steel was full on tackled by the beast, he sprawled some ways away and recovered. "Clover, I can't fight the enemy and protect you guys at the same time!"

@@Steel Accord, "Then you fight the assassin, and let me deal with the bear!" Clover cried out. She stepped out in front of the bear and concentrated her magic. The spell she was about to perform was a sleep spell, and she prefered to use a spell like this over a killing spell. After all, the bear was only trying to protect its lair; it didn't deserve to be killed. Clover enveloped the bear in a haze of green light as she willed it to fall asleep.
