Okay, since I've seen it come up here a couple of times and I've heard people joke about it for quite some time- What exactly is this "waifu" business? What's up with that?

Its taking you're favorite person or pony and letting them invade and control you're mind be...really important to you.

It also could mean you are generally love or are in love with said character(waifu)

Some people take there waifu's more seriously than others. Neither speed is inherently bad.

Side note:

Watch out for Flash Sentry,he steals waifus

When you obsess over a fictional character strongly enough to begin to form emotional bonds to said character. These emotional bonds, while having no physical existence can be as strong as those bonds formed by real life interaction.

tl;dr when someone loves a fictional character.

It's a simple fascination or a love for a fictional character, where it can go from normal to an odd obsession. Where the person who loves the character, believes that the character is real, and other things.

I've met a lot of pony lovers, considering who I am, and the only one who actually believes she isn't a fictional character is Jin...just saying, man.

Anyway, you know how you feel about your best pony? A waifu is that, but multiplied to the point of actually having intimate feelings towards that pony :D

Okay, that. ^ All of that explains what a waifu is, and why there is a huge trend about waifus that has been around since the word was ever mentioned.

It doesn't necessarily explain why the act of waifu'ing has been growing over the years. Not trying to be antagonistic, but next thing ya know false information gets spread.

And for a great resource all about waifus, the act of waifuing, and how you too can participate, there is a wiki dedicated to waifuing.

So that explains it. I would hate to see false information getting spread about this, I've never really understood the term ''waifu'', either. But at least now I know.

With such a sensitive emotional subject, I'd never want false information spread.

But I would enjoy seeing the results of a study as to why the trend is growing in the western world (or atleast appears to)

http://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/waifu And here is a "fantionary" definition of waifu, while it is not an official word in the english language, the definition would be a good place for the OP to start should he wish to delve further.
