Celestia knew from the beginning that SS wasn't the one?

First of all, I'm not sure where this topic should go, since I'll be presenting tie ins from Equestria Girls and the IDW comics, which tie into events from an FIM series episode....soooo...yeahhhhh....=_=

Ok, anyway.....I'm really wondering. Amy Keating Rogers; one of the show's writers, and the author of the Journal of the Two sisters; seems to be throwing series and movie canon out the window with her new book. Ok, I'm trying to wrap my head around this. In the journal, it seems like Celestia and Luna came into contact with the Tree of Harmony in the Everfree forest shortly after Starwirl appointed them as princesses (shortly after the events of Hearthswarming Eve), and they built their castle there to be close to the tree and draw power from it. So upon discovering the tree way back then, Celestia would've seen the symbols on it (which she did, because she felt drawn to the sun symbol, at a time before she even got her cutie mark)

In the series episode, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Celestia had the School for Gifted Unicorns up and running- which - in the SDCC exclusive IDW comic- Sunset Shimmer is shown to have attended, herself, to be taken under Celestia's wing. AND SHE VERY CLEARLY HAS HER CUTIE MARK TATTOED ON HER BUTT, WHILE SHE'S IN THE SCHOOL, TRYING TO IMPRESS THE JUDGES.

But in EQD, Celestia said that Sunset Shimmer began her studies with her not long before Twilight Sparkle did.

So I'm wondering....if Celestia knew that the sun symbol on the Tree was calling out to her, and that it's the same symbol that ended up as her cutie mark (same with Luna), then ..why did she ever take in Sunset Shimmer, who she mat before Twilight, and obviously HAD to have taken notice of Sunset Shimmer's own cutie mark, which obviously didn't match up with the one that the tree of Harmony had; which would've meant that Sunset wasn't the candidate Celestia was looking for, and...ugggggh!

There's no logical reason, as far as I'm aware, why Celestia would've needed to take in Sunset Shimmer, given the clear evidence (coughcutiemarkcough). Like. At. All.

Celestia is over 1000 years old. She's probably taken many students. Also, Celestia probably knew Shimmer was not the element of magic but still a potienally powerful mage in her own right like Starswirl. When defending a kingdom you'd want to train as many power mages as you could, right?

Its also possible that had Shimmer not abandoned Celestia that she may have met Twilight  and become an element bearer in the stead of one of the others.

Well, Celestia could just have a cause of the plot convenience and just never ever noticed the fact that there are cutie marks on the tree, allowing for Twilight to seem that much more aware and knowledgeable of her surroundings. Or it could be that Celestia was training her not to be an alicorn, or a element of harmony barer (and the remane 5's cutie marks are not on the tree either, just Twilight's and the royal sisters). So while she may have known she wasn't going to be this huge thing, there was another princess already (Cadance) who's mark is not on the tree, so Celestia could have just guessed that since she was a very powerful magic user, that she could potentially become a very powerful asset to her kingdom. Cadance's cutie mark is not on the tree, and she is an alicorn princess, so just because Sunset's wasn't, does not mean that she didn't have a probable potential to turn into one.

Well if magic is as unruly as it seems at time, surely she would want to train anyone with exceptional ability to be able to help them controll it and try and get them to use the power in the correct ways.

Tinfoil hat time!:

Maybe we will find out there was a prophecy by star swirl of a chosen one who's name has something to do with the sun. She thought it was sunset shimmer at the time when I fact it was twilight sparkle? Tho that's massive theory crafting haha

Or maybe Celestia's agenda is to advance the plot, regardless of what she knows or doesn't know.  :derp:

What evidence do you have to support the idea of Celestia taking in many students? (aside from Cadance, who she needed to take in to ready her to take the throne in the Crystal Empire, when it returned) Or Blueblood, who......we don't know has real significance or any magcial prowess.....=_= Somehow, I don't think Celly would've had that line of thinking when she started taking in apprentices. She and Luna seemed to have no problem protecting the kingdom, with their own power- since they were alicorns. And ten there's the royal guards they'd turn to, for their actual protection services. She and Luna were obviously wielding the elements by the time Celly started taking in apprentices, since they had used them to put Discord in his place, so they would also tie into them protecting the kingdom on their own. If the elements were responding to the royal sisters, still, then why would Celly see the need to take in Sunset, though, if knowing full well that she wasn't the one with the star cutie mark who's be the element of magic, thus being capable of ascending to Starswirl's level? The tree symbol and butt symbols still come into play with your theory.

This is why, as much as I really like the Journal, I see it as supplementary canon at bast.

There's contradictions to show canon in there, and also a whole lot which just plain doesn't make sense. (The Zebra Homeland is NOT "just the other side of the Everfree Forest". Unless the Everfree Forest spans a continent and an ocean or two. It's Africa, they're Zebras. If they were that close, Equestria would be teeming with them.)

ugh. Don't even get me started on dem Zebra's.

As much as I like the fact that their tribes are expanded on, somewhat...the logic...or...lack thereof....it's so painful. The entire time, I was reading through that part, I just couldn't make sense of it. =_=

Honestly, it felt like one of those scenes where you're watching a character go though some dark tunnel, screen transitions to black,  it gets too dark for them to see for a while, and then, bam! They're in Narnia or something, just out the tunnel. No magical wormholes, or whatever, it's just a full blown other area that anyone can get to, just on the other side of the tunnel, in everyone's backyard.

Zebra's aside, I believe the Sunset Shimmer theory I posted has more in the way of logic- if you want to call it that- to try and question what's up with the ironic lack of it; from the writers/ Celestia's part.

Only thing i have to say is that she probably didn't take her only because she was a potential element of harmony but rather she took her because she was a potential and worthy mage and probably would be someone who would do similar things like Twilight.

Please don't tell me they actually had Zecora's homland "on the other side of the Everfree Forest".......... :okiedokielokie:

Umm... the Everfree Forest is completely within the borders of Equestria:

Are you sure it wasn't a misreading of more the direction the Zebra Lands can be found not that they are on the other side of it?

Unless zebras live in the Badlands that is.

To be fair though we're talking about a time before settlements like Dodge Junction and Apple Loosa. The Everfree could've been bigger during the events stated in the journal.

Honestly, while it did say something along the lines of 'other side of the everfree' or 'other side of the forest,' we don't know exactly what that means.
