Creative Pony names?

Hello everypony,

 

I'm fairly new to the fandom and was wondering if any of you had useful tips to creating good pony names. I've decided to try and write a fanfiction and I need a good name for one of the OCs in the story I've been having a difficult time with it >///<

This is helpful, but I've been having a hard time figuring out what the name this OC because his cutie mark/special talent is a little difficult to find names for.  I thought of naming him Promethesus, but that doesn't sound very ponyish at all. :c

Well, he's an earth pony who's 1/2 crystal pony (his father is a unicorn, his mom is a crystal pony), so even though he has a crystalline coat like normal crystal ponies, he developed the ability to shut his crystalline-ness off whenever he wants unlike most crystal ponies who can't really control when their coat becomes un-crystally.  He's compassionatem helpful, and insightful, but also shy and he tends to internalize things too much which often causes him a lot of anxiety.  He also has a little sister whom he looks out for and protects (like most big brothers do, I'd assume).  His special talent revolves around knowledge and becoming knowledgable for the sake of helping others.  His cutie mark is this: http://www.eco-spirituality.org/images3/ntve017.jpg

 

As for your second question, I don't want to say too much about my story but since this is my first fanfiction, I want to keep the cast of characters relatively small so I can develop them all thoroughly. Also, Twilight wouldn't fit into the story as it takes place before she's born.  I'm sorry ><

Thanks for the welcome ^///^ I'm still kinda shy about being a bony as most of the people who do know about it don't really care for it too much.  I certainly hope I'll make a lot of friends here, but I'm not sure I could be a moderator x_x they have so much responsiblity.

These are all good names, but none of them sound very ponyish.  I think it would be out of place if he had a name like Triston in a story where everypony else has names like Wind Sphere or Apple Cinder ><

Yeah, or like something kinda quirky that you'd probably hear in the show.  It doesn't necessarily have to be a two word name, but I would like it to sound very ponyish which is why I've been having such a hard time.

Oopes, I'm so silly...I made a huge mistake.  He's 1/2 crystal pony because his father is a unicorn and his mom is a crystal pony xD haha derpderpderp, it's very late.  I'm sorry about that.

Usually I'd say your OC's name is most influenced by their personality and talent, as in the show. In my case, though, I also added a bit of a nod to myself in real life. Red Cedar loves trees and forests, so naming him after a tree was almost a given, but I also live in British Columbia. As a nod to that, I chose thst name because the Western Red Cedar is the provincial tree.

Oooh.  I didn't really mean to model him after any of the cannon characters, but he does share qualities with both of them (and I didn't even realize it x_x!).
