Is this character mentally ill?

I have a character in my mind. He is an archetype right now, but essentially he slaves away to do something special to society. He wants nothing more, than for people to simply be happy and thrive. He passes down his ideas to someone else and refuses to take credit for what he did. Is it actually an illness for not wanting exposure or recognition of any level for doing something important?

Any insecurities you can detect in this person?

It could just be a case of selflessness taken to an extreme.

And he/she/xir may have issues with dealing with direct attention, or "fear of the limelight". So in order to draw attention away from themselves, they constantly bring others up above them.

Or they are just a Saint.

Your character reminds me of this phrase that I read as part of the rules on a book for certain meetings.

It went along the lines that:

"If you do something good make sure no one knows of it. If anyone finds out you did it it does not count"

Now if I met someone like your character I would say that perhaps they are shy, or perhaps they don't know

how to react to praise. Just like there are people who can't take criticism so are there also people who have

a hard time with praise.

Either that or like Dovashy said, he could just be very humble.

If you are looking specifically for a mental illness I would say that the closest comparitive example would be patient in the

episode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charity_Case of the House series. If you aren't afraid of spoilers, and would like to learn of the

exact medical nature of this House episode then I would suggest going here: http://www.politedissent.com/archives/8087

It's called humility. Or an inability to accept praise. It can be tough. Maybe you can delve into the character and their motive a bit more, to figure it out…

Does he fear praise? Or just feel himself unworthy of it? Does he feel like he deserves to be put down, or does he just not want the attention at all?

There are a number of reasons somepony might not take credit for their work. That's why there are ghostwriters and PAs…

Look deeper into the motivation behind his actions.
