They should put in some ways to prevent trolls posting gore.

I was traumatized by this trolls posting pictures of a dead cat. I have reported him, but isn't there a way to stop such posts from occurring. Many forums have mechanisms to stop them.

Perhaps you could enforce a minimum post number to post pictures like many forums. Or, maybe, like other forums, require that the member be registered for a few days before posting.

*edit: I cannot get the image etched out of my mind. I will have trouble sleeping tonight.

I saw him, and he has been banned relatively quickly. Most of the trolls, despite the fact that there are not many trolls I find myself, are usually dispatched of pretty quickly.

I suppose it's a possablity really, but I don't know the specifics and technical aspects of the whole thing, a post count requirement for posting pictures could be a nice way to deter any trolls from posting pictures that are gruesome or NSFW, but they could also if they wanted still bypass it possibly as well, so idk how much good it would do.

Honestly I don't know much of any other possible solutions, thankfully the mods are very quick to deal with these trolls when they do appear, so just report them and that helps them get to it even faster.

I'm sorry to hear you were traumatized by the post by the way, I wasn't exactly thrilled by it myself.

Easy report them if a stereotype a hole is in this forums i'll report them if a troll started saying shit like "your an Arabic shouldn't you be bombing yourself?) i'll report them and the admins will do the rest

I did not have the misfortune of seeing his/her post, but am very sorry for anyone who did. Anyway, I wouldn't be against just banning pictures. If people are going to break the rules then we won't have nice things.

Hey there, @Phosphorous. As your topic is a suggestion as opposed to a question, I have moved it from Site Questions & Tech Support to Feedback & Suggestions.

Firstly, I'm very sorry you had to see that. It is rare, but there are people who will post evil things like that. The staff do their best to ban then as quickly as possible, and I assure you that this individual was banned pretty fast. Unfortunately, not fast enough for no one to see that image.

I know stuff like that is very disturbing, and I am truly sorry you had to see it. I encourage you to not allow it to get to you too much, though. Yes, it's evil, but allowing it to disturb you is giving the guy who posted it a victory. You can choose to focus on the positive and not allow it to drag you down or consume your thoughts.

Regarding security restrictions, we do have some in place:
  • New members cannot have a signature, use the blogging system, access the Life Advice section, or post in Roleplay World until they have at least 5 posts.

  • New members cannot upload unlimited attachments until they have at least 40 posts.

While I am always willing to consider adding more security restrictions, I fear that putting in too many would become far too restrictive. The vast majority of people who join are not going to troll. Even most of the trolls are not going to post anything this bad. I don't want to tie everyone's hands to prevent one person in a blue moon posting something horrific.

We try to maintain a balance between security and freedom here. I fear that the amount of restrictions necessary to make it impossible for someone to post this sort of imagery would infringe way too much on everyone's freedom and discourage legitimate members from wanting to come here.

I understand where you're coming from with your suggestion, and I know seeing that image was very painful and difficult, but the unfortunate fact of the matter is that no safeguard is infallible, and too many safeguards can become frustrating and limiting for legitimate members.

The thing is that text can never be as traumatizing as images. What is the worst text art that one can make. Cartoon text art Phalluses? I've seen 'em a million times. With Images, they can post images of their own Phalluses, and potentially cause forum viewers trouble with their ISPs. In school, for example, if someone viewed such an image, they would be in trouble.

And that is not the worst thing they can post. I'm happy that at least it was a dead cat, not bestiality, humans with flesh ripped out, child porn, or all three combined. That would bring me to legal trouble.

maybe the could review everything before it's posted

This is impossible to do. Due to very frequent posts at any time of the day and night it would take hours for a post to show, plus it would be lots of unnecessary work for the staff.

If you mean review every single video or picture, this would still take too much time.

And @@SCS, the forums are not restrictive at all. How about the option of adding pictures after a certain number of posts (like twenty)? If the troll posts a link, you don't have to click it. It's your choice if you risk.

maybe the could review everything before it's posted, then it won't even get to the public's eye, and I'm sorry about you seeing a picutre of a dead cat, :( I hate things like that

Members who have frequently borken the rules are placed in a "mod queue" where their posts have to be approved by a moderator before they appear onsite but with sheer volume on content posted on here I think even if the moderation staff was double or even tripled that it would be feasable to put everyone in the "mod queue" and may alienate and discourage the majority of people from posting on here that don't tend to do anything seriously wrong.

Aquila was doing some investigation in the ACP the other day and couldn't find any setting that would allow this. I agree that this would be nice to have, but unless there's a hook for it we'd have to get Lavo or feld0 to design custom functionality for this, and I don't know when that could happen. They already have a ton on their plate.
