Can Princess Celestia do the sonic rainboom?

Not with what the writers have said that it was essentially Twilight's own version of the Sonic Rainboom thus movement speed would be involved.

That panel still showed nothing similar to what a teleportation spell in FIM usually is but is more akin to what Twilight and Rainbow Dash has done.

 

Its not like what Rainbow Dash and Twilight have done. At least it doesn't seem so to me.

If this is based solely on flight speed, I would say that whether or not Celestia could do an equivalent of a sonic rainboom would depend on how often she flies. Cadence in the Three's A Crowd episode remarked that she was a little out of shape in regard to flying. If Celestia is similar, she might not be able to perform an equivalent of a sonic rainboom. 

 

Twilight was able to break the sound barrier in her flight in Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2, but she had the essence of four alicorns at the time. 

 

Now, if Celestia used magic, I'm sure she could easily perform a sonic rainboom or something equivalent.

Yes Celestia can preform a sonic rainboom, hell there was legends of it so it had been preformed before Rainbow Dash and it was probably Celestia. However I'd say it would be rather trivial and beneath her now, yes she would cheat and use magic to do it but that's hardly cheating if magic is your focus, you're just doing something however you can.

 

I think Celestia has the magic that if she wanted to boost her flying to the max and show off than she'd preform her extra special SuperSonic Supernova Streak... But that would also result in a blast wiping all life from Equestria, so she avoids it.

Why thank you, when a character is made out to have obtained a Demi-God level of power (you know ageless ruler for over a 1000 years speaks for itself) things tend to become rather boring if they don't go batshit crazy like Discord, I imagine it's why she took on a student and hands everything off on her, makes things exciting if there's a threat of failure.

I just don't think she is that powerful, we don't really have much to compare her to because we never see her fight. The few times we do are...

 

1- Fighting Nightmare Moon, a similar strength opponent.

2- Two against one with Celestia and Luna VS Sombra

3- In the comics, nearly dying from Catapults.

4- Elements of Harmony against Discord (If that counts as a fight)

5- Loosing to Chrysalis

The fact she refused to fight her sister, and immediately used something absolutely more powerful than NMM to fight her when she realized she couldn't let her sister run amok is already proof enough that she held back and didn't wanted to waste time fighting her as it would surely cause devastation otherwise.

 

2. True, but certainly not close to death as she looked more exhausted than anything.

 

3. It's being smart to recognize that you're not strong enough to beat a threat on your own, and thus you use something that will definitely bring you victory.

 

4. The immense love of Shining Armor proved powerful enough that it allowed Cadence and him to defeat Chrysalis and her changling army by bringing back that force field to full strength again. I highly doubt Chrysalis is one of them considering that in the 'Queen Chrysalis Returns' arc, Twilight, who at the time was only a Unicorn, managed to beat Chrysalis in single combat while only needed a power boost on her own to do it, which I disliked.

@Zoraxe: In the comics, she was actually holding back the force of several dozen projectiles from Nightmares moons forces, and apparently sustained it. It's difficult to say how strong those catapults are, though, or even what they're made of.
In the show, Celestia baited her like a sucker. The elements are in the throne room, so she needed to get Nightmare out. She hangs for a few seconds to make sure she catches up, then takes a hit above the same building so she can get them without arousing suspicion. She doesn't look or sound hurt in the slightest after taking a shot.

I don't think Chrysalis was at the same level of power as in A Royal Canterlot Wedding before the boost though, unless those were some really powerful rabbits.

1- She just didn't want to fight and hurt her sister. She used the elements because she could, it put off having to kill her or get killed.

 

2- Exhausted, and hurt, and about to lose.

 

3- Yep. She can't use the elements now though. Not that Celestia would now be able to use the element of honesty now either way anyways, but that's a different discussion.

 

4- Still, the love of just one pony tipped the balance.

 

The later half of the 4th comic was weak compared to the rest of that arc.

 

No, Celestia did not lose on purpose to Chrysalis. Stop trying to make her so Aizen Sōsuke level over-powered, that's boring. My criticisms of Magical mystery cure are because of how manipulative Celestia is (Because of bad writing rather than intent) in that episode. If it turns out that she faked getting defeated by Chrysalis than she really would be that manipulative and I will official hate Celestia and hope she gets taken out.

 Nightmare Moon makes a hole in the roof of the building at 1:43, and you can see the the exit door to the room at 1:46. After Celestia takes a hit, she falls through what looks like roughly the same hole at 2:30, around roughly the same pattern of rocks NMM made when she blew the roof. You can even see the same door at 3:08.
Logic dictates that if Celestia wasn't going to fight her sister, she needed something else to try to beat her. If the only thing that could do that was under her feet at the time, it makes sense that she would dupe her.
