Maressey - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

 

Twilight’s been through a lot through four seasons and the finale brought up how important it is to have a purpose and goals you personally want to see happen. Not to stand around and have things happen to you but to choose your own destiny. This is our first Maressey track based on that theme, a group project we’ve been very excited to see fulfilled as well after a few years of planning. It’s our dream to get people interested in mixing the power of The Smiths songs within the characters of the MLP universe. We hope you enjoy this starting point and tune in for new weekly songs from an array of brony musicians taking part in tackling an amazing catalog of songs. Whether you’re currently a Smiths fan or not (or an MLP fan or not) we hope to tune you in to one of the best songwriting groups in music through our covers/parodies/tribute and do our part in merging and honoring 2 fandoms simultaneously.

"Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" is of course originally performed by The Smiths. It was released as the B-side of "William, It Was Really Nothing" in 1984 and later featured on the compilation albums Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs. This is the tail of the lonely brony, someone who wanted friendship but was to shy to attain it. Probably plenty of such people out there sadly. It's also the second Maressey track and a ponified cover of the The Smiths original.

Yeah i may do a little video just breaking down how we did the different elements of that track as it was pretty interesting getting the different effects and elements to work. Basically a combination of 2 different drum kit libraries in tandem, 2 bass elements too. (not live, but no loops, but kontakt libraries).  Andante did the tremolo guitar and we double tracked it with a sidechain to an inaudible kick track and at opposing times so that its constantly going back and forth between the hard panned left and right channels.  We did 2 sets of the "wailing guitar" one by Zatslol and one by myself, reversing the guitars, adding long reverb, reversing back, and adding another long reverb. Finally Zatslol does that amazing guitar chorus which really made the track come alive and a fair amount of delay and reverb on that. I doubled his vocals up with different takes (which were very much in sync) during the chorus parts and with varying delay to make a bit more anthemic. A bit of work but a lot of fun to replicate a classic track that's almost impossible to duplicate well in a live environment.

So new Maressey track out, this one far peppier and a bit more stripped down (only 1 of everything; gtr,drums,bass):

Braeburn is transporting a cart of apples to Canterlot as his wagon breaks down. And who should come to his rescue? But a particularly charming white mare in a wagon on her way back to Ponyville. This is Maressey's third track and a tribute to our beloved Rarity and the chance meeting between the element of generosity and our rustic stable boy.

 

 

Vocals for this track are by the amazing Morte McAdaver who helped come up with the Maressey project a good 2 years ago and he returned to help see it come to fruition. 

 

All the rest of the instruments are done by Johnny Mare who helped truly launch this project too by working on the instrumentals for 10 of our songs. He's a long time Smiths fan and not even a brony.. A huge thanks to his generosity in making this project happen.

 

And I did the mixing, mastering, and organizing of this project. Like any track each one brings up little different things to juggle so all the elements work in tandem together. Been learning quite a lot more about production then when i started.

In the middle of the night Luna is attacked by an evil force and found in a coma. Celestia is overcome with a wave of emotions from the past regarding her fallen sister, both positive and negative. One thing is for certain, it’s serious…… (no not really).  This is the fourth track from the Maressey project, a ponified cover of The Smiths classic, and sung from Celestia’s pov.

Vocals for this track are by the amazing Faux Synder. She is an amazing talent with a golden voice and she was absolutely wonderful to work with. This is the first track of a several song Flutterdash ship arc. Taking place during the Hurricane Fluttershy episode, this is from Dash's pov (Evdog) as she expresses not just her need for her help but also for something much more. Every relationship starts with a spark but it only truly begins with a question and a reply of "yes". This is the fifth track from the Maressey project, a ponified cover of The Smiths classic "Ask".

Besides a visit from Maude I’m not sure I’ve sure we will see any traces of Pinkie’s family and if it’s miserable as she indicated she’s likely not going back home. This is a song about missing and yet continuing to avoid a painful childhood past. It’s also a Smiths classic b-side.

Coco Pommel has a passion for fashion but her time in Manehattan has been anything but what she dreamed it would be. Long hours of making dresses from other's patterns, an abusive boss, and no one around to look out for her, is there any reason she shouldn't be a bit sad in the big city? This is basically a brony theme song for dealing with haters and trolls while enjoying what we love (MLP). We may encounter adversity but you don't have to let it dampen your spirit or your enthusiasm. It follows a brony who travels all across the country attending brony conventions. Ok at some point I needed to think about what the Maressey album would look like and would it be just ONE? While the themes often change each week on the new release I was hoping we'd get to the character arcs where songs start telling stories of several ships, with each song telling a different chapter of that storyline over its course. The best place for this to happen is with the album releases so each album has a theme. Therefore I've proposed collecting the songs in 4 themed albums, with one for Rarijack, Flutterdash, Twiluna, and one a general bronies topics theme. Four just works for the amount of character themes involved and the progress so far on each. .

The number indicates song progress. 5 is a completed song, 4 has an instrumental and a vocal with it in the mixing stage. 3's often have a far along instrumental but are needing a vocal or further instrument work. 2's or lower are very much a wip instrumental draft or perhaps have nothing yet if lower. Any song that is crossed out could have been part of the album if someone took charge and made the song but is otherwise not likely going to be attempted to make it just due to time constraints. They are non essential to album completion so we are likely skipping them. Can't make every Maressey song into a reality.

Dubstep invades Ponyville and many ponies have just had their fill of it and are furious by their sleepless nights and vibrating buildings. Applejack in particular says enough is enough and burns down the local danceclub right outside her farm early one morning. She accidentally sets off a musical backlash that affects all corners of Equestria with dj's fleeing for their lives as mobs of ponies protest against EDM. This track is of course a ponified version of The Smiths classic track. Enjoy.

Part 2 of the Twiluna Arc for album #3: Twi and her crush Luna finally spend some alone time during their visit in Canterlot and the differences between the 2 become ever so much apparent. This song is the ending track from album #4. It can spiral to a climax with the right guitarist or go a trip hop approach if someone want to make it more stripped down. We do have a bare instrumental to sing to currently.

Continuing the story from “This Charming Mare”; A rescued Braeburn is escorted back to Appleloosa after his wagon cart is damaged. Sparks ignite with Big Mac and the stallion while taking shelter in a barn during a sudden rainstorm. Afterwards he’s conflicted about his own sexuality after the unplanned encounter. Mac assures him not to fret and to make his own choices for his future. This track is part of one of the four albums planned that primarily tells the story of Rarijack (and the characters who are also a part of that same storyline). It’s also originally a Smiths classic track.

Alright here is the second Jeff Burgess vocal track. It's also the true kickoff of the upcoming Rarijack album. Later songs will document that relationship like fimfic chapters. Other tangent characters to be included will include Big Mac's 2 songs and Sweetie Belle too.

 

 

As Braeburn and Big Mac head back to Appleloosa, Rarity and Applejack continue to squabble at the Apple ranch. Underneath their years of conflict lies a hidden longing that boils to the surface. Rarity is the first to let her feelings be known and Applejack soon reveals they are mutual. What they must soon deal with are the repercussions; will their families and friends understand their choice when the former antagonists become lovers? This is another song/chapter from the upcoming Rarijack album. It's also originally a Smiths classic track.

This is the second track of the upcoming Flutterdash album. Alone in the dark, Scootaloo is again revisited by all the problems of her life. Orphaned, crippled, and utterly lost; Will she ever realize her dreams that are denied her and find the love she needs?

So this is an update to progress of the four themed Maressey albums.  I was hoping we'd get to the character arcs where songs start telling stories of several ships, with each song telling a different chapter of that storyline over its course. The best place for this to happen is with the album releases so each album has a theme. Therefore I've proposed collecting the songs in 4 themed albums, with one for Rarijack, Flutterdash, Twiluna, and one a general bronies topics theme. Four just works for the amount of character themes involved and the progress so far on each. Overall this project examines the difficulties of having relationships within different personalitie and what happens when friendships are stretched by having different goals in life. I've gone with Lauren Faust's original concept to have Rarity and Dash fulfill their dreams outside of Ponyville but also the costs of such a departure. The biggest theme of all is how things change and we often feel the loss of tearing away of those bonds.

 

Here's the state of the four albums at this moment. The number indicates song progress. 5 is a completed song and in bold, 4+ range has an instrumental and a vocal with it in the mixing stage. 3's often have a far along instrumental but are needing a vocal or further instrument work. 2's or lower are very much a wip instrumental draft or perhaps have nothing yet if lower. Any song that is crossed out could have been part of the album if someone took charge and made the song but is otherwise not likely going to be attempted to make it just due to time constraints. They are non essential to album completion so we are likely skipping them. Can't make every Maressey song into a reality. At this point the first 2 albums are very far along, the other 2 have time to be completed. Every planned album songs has at least a far along wip.

First Album (Rarijack theme, includes Big Mac, Sweetie Belle, and Spike) 10 songs. This album is closest to done so will be the focus to release first.

It's cider season and Big Mac has yet another awkward encounter with an eager Cheerilee. As is usual with most of the mares in Ponyville he is aggressively (and on this night drunkenly) hit on, despite the fact he has no interest in the company of mares. This is also a ponified cover of The Smiths classic.

Vocals for this track are by the amazing Luna Jax. He did a fantastic job on vocals and I thank him very much for continuing his excellent run of being the go to for Big Macintosh songs in the fandom. And I am Freewave who did the rest of the music. Mixing, mastering, and organizing of this project.
