It depends on several factors, including the tone of voice it's said in, who's telling it to who, and the context.

Like everything it depends. Just general insults from strangers? Whatever, I don’t let those emotionally impact me. Who cares. Insults from someone I actually know? Totally different, especially since they tend to be a lot more specific and personal. A friend or family member knows what to say to get under your skin. And those are the ones that stick with you emotionally.

I wouldn't say insults hurt me as much as apathy would. The words that tended to hurt me the most were the kind that let me know that people weren't trying to be understanding and didn't plan to, either.
