This sort of thread is more appropriate for a blog post or status update, given the fact that it's more of a personal anecdote than a discussion thread.  Because of the size of the forum, we try and limit threads to the types of topics likely to garner a more in depth discussion, where personal updates are best left to either a status update or a blog post.
