Steel rolled his eyes " all I meant was do not attack me or get a bounty on your head. It was no threat, only advice" steel said looking at the grey unicorn "and as for the Red Court even if they do kill me I'll die fighting, I'll die a warriors death and have my honor, can you say the same if you left the ponies that can't defend themselves"

"What is the Red Court?" Starchase peeked out of his cloak. "And what's that?" He asked pointing to the car, never having seen one before. He had a feeling they were indeed in the future and not insane. The truth was, he really is defenseless as the pegasus said. He'd be butchered.

"Can we all just go now?" He shrunk back into his hood, sensing the tension in the air.

"I wasn't making a threat. I specifically said I don't like killing. Why would I threaten you? Especially since you are helping us? And unicorns don't exist? Well, this is odd. Going by that, my and the psycho probably stand out quite a bit compared to you "earth ponies", let's hope it doesn't get us all killed. Of course, if these hive guys com after us, I vote we throw the psycho to them and run like Hell." He says, staring at steel, trying to get the wannabe to shut up. "By the way, bragging is unprofessional. Mercs don't do it, our work speaks our skill. So, psycho, please stop yapping away over there "

Steel smirked "phyco I like it and not once did I brag" steel said "past that I'm not a merc I don't fight wars or battles" steel said "I get paid to get rid of ponies that's all. Throwing me to the wolves is funny because I don't run from a fight. You say your skill speaks for itself yet your first instinct seems to be to run."

The unicorn makes a conscious effort to ignore the three who, in his opinion, have varying degrees of pride issues.

Answering Starchase quickly and only partially so as to move on, he says, "The Red Court are monsters you don't want to meet.  That's why we're leaving now.  Come on everypony, unless you'd rather die a warrior's death, which I hear is preferable to normal death in some way.  As for myself, I'd rather not die at all."

He begins to trot at a relatively quick pace towards the city.

“What surprises me most?  Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.  Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.  And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

"Your right psycho, mercenaries don't go around killing unless it's necessary. Assassins just murder anything. And my run away instinct is that I didn't get paid to be here so as of now, I have no reason to risk my life. And you, the pony guiding us, I agree. Warrior death or cowards death, doesn't matter. I vote no death." The Griffin lifts into the air, watching for movement.

Sinu continues to listen to the conversation from the back, still frustrated at how stupid the circumstances are. "Please, why..." He thinks; "Stop talking about murder; you make me nervous standing within a dekameter. It's bad enough luck as it is, being in a group with two trained mercenaries." He sighs heavily, wanting to say something, but refraining. "And you even defined 'assassin' incorrectly." As they finally leave, decreasing his anxiety due to such slow pace in clear danger, he follows behind the group as they travel into the city. Despite being counterintuitive, he remains excited to go and see the technological advances that have been made over the time period.

Zephyr looked back and forth around the group as they made their way towards the imposing city. 'Why did I get dragged along with a bunch of killers and bounty hunters?' she thought to herself, 'I'm just a mailmare, what importance could I possibly have in the future? The Gatekeeper must of made a mistake or something'. Finally the small pegasus spoke up. "I hafta agree with the griffin on the no-death thing" she began, "I ain' lookin' to start any fights. I don't know about this future place but ah sure don't like much so fah".

"Can we all just stop talking about it, please?" Starchase sighed heavily from under his hood. He felt nervous and jittery. He just wanted to go home, this wasn't exactly his idea of a great adventure when it included the high risk of dying.

I'm too young to die he screamed in his mind as he calmly followed behind as if everything was absolutely fine.

"I don't deserve this," grumbled the unicorn.  He continued trotting, not responding to any of them, until they arrived in the city proper.

The sidewalks were filled with ponies, all going somewhere, even at this late hour of the night.  The buildings rose steeply on either side of them, the occasional sign glowing in the dark with a subtle buzzing or humming sound that could only be heard over the automobile traffic and chatter of voices if one stood close enough.  Nopony paid much attention to any of them, except maybe the griffin, but it was only the occasional glance that was a little more than casual.  Probably because there didn't seem to be many griffins in the city.

The group was led though a good number of these streets, some busier than others, some glowier than others, until they turned right into an inconspicuous door in a brick building.  Their guide did not look back or hold the door for them, and just opened it and walked in.

Sinu has a hard time concentrating on walking, marveling at the city, and walks straight into a lamp post. He looks up, startled, but relieved to find that it was not another pony. "This is unusual..." He thinks, as he looks closer; "It seems that this lamp post is finally utilizing gas discharge as a light source." He examines it closer. "It's unlike any that I've seen; the bulb is helical, not straight. I guess that I'll need to ask this mystery unicorn later, after he warms up to us a bit." He continues following the unicorn, galloping to catch up, and walks into the building. "He should stop being so angry." Sinu can't help but laugh at the irony in the thought.

Starchase was mesmerized by the sights and sounds of the city. He could barely believe his eyes! The buildings seem to reach the skies, things glowed by themselves unlike objects he'd enchanted with his light spells. He was simply astounded. Though the traffic did scare him a little.

He was lagging behind a little as the went through the densely crowded streets. He nearly bumped into the pony infront of him as they stopped before a brick building. He shook himself out of his daze and followed the unicorn in.

Walking up a flight of stairs, down a hallway with quite a few numbered doors in it, he withdrew keys from his saddlebag and opened one of them halfway down the hall, leading the group inside, and closing and locking the door behind him.

"This is my office."  He gives the group a look that says 'I'm not putting up with any crap'.

"Now that we're...probably not going to be jumped by monsters at any given time, you can ask me any questions you have, and if they aren't incredibly stupid or violent or personal or annoying, I'll answer them as well as I can.  It's pretty far-fetched that you guys are from the past, but I've seen weirder things in my lifetime, and I'm sure I will continue to see them after this."

He touches his horn on the door and it glows briefly, then fades back to normal, and he turns to face the group, though from the look on his face, one might assume without context that he was preparing to walk the plank in a few seconds.

"Who are you?" Starchase innocently asked as he inspected the objects in the room. "Your name is not personal information is it? What year is it? Where are we? What happened?!" He grew anxious with each question, his heart heavy as it thumped inside his chest.

"I just want to know why I was even dragged here, but since you probably don't have an answer to that, I will settle for this. Why in the hell do unicorns have to hide? It doesn't make sense, you know, considering that the whole planet pretty much revolves around magic."

"Well," he says in response to Starchase, "I can tell you what other ponies call me.  My name's Blackstone."  He pauses.  "That's about as much on the topic of names as you're getting from me.  And as for what happened to you guys, I've got as many clues as you've got.  Probably less."

He then states the year, but it has a different state of reference than what the rest of the group is used to:  "It's 432 years after the Earth pony uprising.  Unless the numbers have been fudged a bit.  They 'fudged' a lot of things around that time.  That's also the reason that nopony believes in magic, if our records are to be trusted, though according to the public education system, of course, magic doesn't exist."

He looks at the group.  "You guys know about the Earth pony uprising, don't you?  You have to if you're from any time afterwards, unless you live under a rock."

Staring at the unicorn, Mirror Image laughs. "Sorry, I know plenty of earth ponies, but none of them ever made me think they were going to destroy our society. And none of them cared one way or the other about unicorn magic. In other words, the when that we came from, everypony still got along more or less."

Blackstone shrugs.  "I can't help you any more than that.  Lady Rose, the leader of the Earth Ponies at the time, ordered all information regarding magic to be burned or destroyed, unicorns were enslaved at first and then put to death later, and she was in power for nearly thirty years.  We've tried to piece together as much as we can from before her, but aside from knowing magic existed more freely before Lady Rose, we don't have much."

"So what are we suppose to do about it?" Starchase scratched his head. "We're stuck here, possibly persecuted by loonies and everybody's out to get us."

He sat down on the floor with his back to the wall and shook his hood off. He tried to make himself as insignificant as possible, wishing his was home.

Sinu had been standing silently in the back of the group for a while, listening closely to the conversation, and thinking about what to do about the prior adverse events. He goes through several possible plans in his head, looking for flaws, something that he could do too well. He finally decides to speak up after finding a good idea; "The temporal teleport that transported us here was obviously generated by magic; what are Equestria's remaining magical sources?"

"I think you misunderstand; there is still plenty of magic, it has just...changed a little over the years. With the number of unicorns lowered so much, it has become more concentrated in all of us. But...I doubt any unicorn has the power to do a Permanant Temporal Transport spell on six ponies from more than 400 years in the past. I can't even cast one on myself, and I'm no pushover."

He turns to Starchaser. "And you. No, you won't be persecuted. Those days are long past. Lady Rose destroyed all evidence of us, and we went into hiding; the other races came to believe we were extinct, and the next generation was brainwashed into believing we never existed to begin with." He sighs. "But there are much worse problems than persecution to handle. Like the Changeling courts, the Breezy Queens, the Knights of Sombra...those are just a few, and it's up to the unicorns to deal with them. The rest of Equestria just keeps chugging along pretending none of them exist, either."

"What I mean is that we should find whatever it is that transported us here; if it sent us to save Equestria, it obviously made an error. If it were correct, we would be at the catalyst event that caused all of this, likely when this Lady Rose came into power. If we were to find it, we could either find out what we are supposed to do here, or be sent back to that vital point. So, what exists that is capable of that kind of power?"
