OC design critique

Recommended Posts

Hey, everyone.

I just want your opinions on the overall design, colors of my OC, etc. (just overall design, please.) It's my first time trying to ask people about this, and have been reading the general things of what people don't like about OC designs...

But I have really just created something that I think is a relatively good design. So what do you think? What could be improved? Be as constructively critical as you want, every little helps.

Also, I drew this with my finger. I lost my stylus. -.-

I'm usually cautious towards black and neon/vivid colors mixing on a design--despite it looking good, it seems to be a common choice. Probably because it's simple and high contrast: striking without looking busy or too intense.

It works, and is fairly pleasant in appearance... However, it's not highly original, sorry to say. I kinda carry that over to include the mane/tail style: looks good, and I like it, but it's easily similar to other designs I've seen.  :)

I'm not saying you're better off changing him, but be aware, haha. Otherwise, maybe play with coloration or mane/tail styles a bit, until you find something charming and different than the normal messy/spiky look.  ;)

Got it. I will admit, it wasn't something that I put nearly as much effort into as other things, but I'm willing to change it, especially after seeing many of the same thing repeated.

Will modify and repost soon.

I think it will look better if you tone down the green and change the black to something else. Can still be dark and close to black. Right now it just looks like you took the most saturated green you could find, which I think is a bit too strong. And it looks like you took the blackest of black too, which I also think would look better with something not as dark.

I'm mostly worrying about if you want to shade that mane, it might be hard if you start out with that super black as a base, because you have nowhere darker to go. And with the green it is similar but more about the saturation. If you want to do something with that color in a drawing, you don't really have anywhere but less saturated to go because it starts out at max.

But then again I am not close to an expert with colors, and neon colors are pretty popular (especially within furry and pony stuff), so you might be able to work it out fine.

You drew this with your finger haha?

Sucks that you lost your stylus though =/.

A lot of people don't like neon colored ponies, but I feel like using the neon in the hair and tail is fine (I like neon and high contrast done well personally). Always room to experiment with hairstyles and such though.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good starting point.

Okay, edited.

What do you think now? I will admit, the previous design did look a little... Garish? Anyways, I've changed the color scheme, and the mane design. I've also added the unicorn horn that I forgot last time.

This is still with the same finger-drawn "base" that I used previously.

@@Wyzecat, I'd say it looks more original now, plus it still has a nice level of color and contrast, which I think you wanted.  :) I think it's an improvement.

I can see the change in the hair, though it still seems fairly similar/unremarkable--that said I don't think a lot needs to be asked of it, haha. The color was my focus really.

Looks less cheezy now, but I actually still liked it better before. I think you only needed to tone the colors down a bit, not change them too drastically.  But if you like what you have now then stick with it. I think the cutie mark is still garish on the white body color though. Is her butt irradiated D=? Jk.

Also, remember that you don't have to make the body color be completely white for it to look white, and I think it usually looks better when it has a bit of other color. Rarity for example feels pretty white but her body color isn't completely white, it's more grey. http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110908120520/mlp/sv/images/a/af/Rarity.png

I looked at Celestia and Vinyl too and they are almost completely white though so I might be wrong. Probably just personal preference.

In all honesty, I didn't feel motivated to color the coat in, but I guess I could slightly change it.

Also, darken the cutie mark.

I think your new design would look fabulous with a very pale cream colored coat and citrusy yellow-green eyes.

EDIT: In this case, the bright streaks in your mane and tail design might cut out for a darker shade.

Personally i think both of your designs are good i like the second one better but the first design was ok if anything i have to agree with everyone else and say turn down the green a bit but other than that it was good

for the second design i would say change the eye color it doesn't really go with the rest of the colors and i am not really sure what the cutie mark is but if it is something that doesn't have to be green i would say change it and maybe and the slightest bit of colour to her base coat if you want to

overall i say good job :D
