I vote for labeling, since I think this is my right to know what's in the food I buy, to be able to decide if I want to include it in my diet or not. Not only GMO, but chemicals, food preservants, production processes etc.

But I guess such a law would be pointless, since they would cheat the labels nevertheless. It's quite easy actually, and they do it already with many chemicals. For example, they replace it with some E123 (or other numbers) so that you can't know what it is until you search it on some official list of such labels. Or they will add just enough of a poisonous chemical to fit in the "allowed daily norm" or something, but if you eat more of that product than the norm says, well, too bad for ya, it's your fault then :P

I know a guy who's working for a transport company, and he told me many times how they transport huge cisterns of some pesky chemicals to different food producers and farms – cisterns with skulls and bones painted on them, and other warnings! But those chemicals are then added to our food, in "safe" amounts.

And these norms are mischievous either, because some of these chemicals can accumulate in your organism with time, and even if they fit in the allowed norms for each portion, they will be bad for you in the long run.

There's one more trick, the most trickiest I think: They can use a chemical which is considered "safe" and it is allowed for digestion, all legal and rosy, but when it is being digested by the enzymes in your body cells, it splits into components, one of which is poisonous. There are two notable examples of that: One is aspartame, which is a popular artificial sweetener. Alone it is "safe", but when it metabolizes in your body, one of the metabolites is methyl alcohol, which is poisonous to nerve cells. The other one is cyanocobalamin. Its natural form, cobalamin, is also known as B12 vitamin, and it is the only source of cobalt ions for our bodies. Unfortunately, it is rare, and very hard to produce artificially. It can be produced only by certain bacteria. So they produce a "substitute", cyanocobalamin, which has almost identical structure. Well, almost. And it's this "almost" which makes a huge difference: because when digested by the enzymes in your cells, they take only the cobalamin part they're used to, and they throw off the "waste product", which in this case is the cyano group! They literally introduce a chemical trojan horse into your body and make it produce a poison. But they're "innocent", because it is not them who made it poisonous – it is you :P

There are also things which they aren't required to pun on the labels, since they're just part of the production process, not part of the product. For example, everyone knows that carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. But it apparently ceases to be poisonous when they use it for artificially coloring meat to have a nice red color. Or to turn green bananas into yellow.

As to the GMO, until recent, in my country it was totally forbidden to sow genetically-modified seeds and grow them anywhere outside laboratories and food control facilities. But the government, lobbied by the Big Pharma with big $$$, changed just a little bit of this act: it is still forbidden to grow GMO plants here, but they allowed to sell GMO seeds. And this change has been made behind our backs, without the public knowing about it. This might seem a trivial and innocent change, but it is actually crucial, because it potentially opens a backdoor for selling food made of GMO seed, such as soy, bean etc.

There's one more problem with GMO food I need to tell you about.

My friend's mom works in a food testing facility. She basically tests whether some food is OK for digestion, it doesn't contain any bacteria, heavy metals, or other poisonous stuff. She can also check if the food is genetically modified. So I asked her how do they check it. And she told me that they test it by comparison: they compare the food they want to probe with samples they get from the Big Pharma. Pretty neat. But now imagine that they've got GMO food samples labeled as "clean". What result will they get when using this comparison method on another GMO test sample? They'll get the "clean" result! Even if the sample in question was contaminated by GMO! Nice going... :P

So, in conclusion:

Wanna be healthy, full of energy, and live long life? Then make and grow your own food. Only then you can be certain about what you eat. Anyone else can lie to you.

I'm a fan of GMO's. I think labeling GMO food is just a 1st world fad that gets people all panicky, and pretty useless to most people that aren't educated on the subject

Are you aware that since GMOs hit the market, cancer, food allergies in children, obesity, diebetis, and other conditions caused by damaging inflammation have skyrocketed?

Furthermore, due to corporate lobbying, the FDA, and USDA dont test GMOs for safety... No they let those companies test... with no regulations.

And also, third party researchers in the US must get expressed written consent from the GMO companies before they publish any articles about their products.

BioTech is shoving poison down our throats, and lying about it, and paying the government to allow it.

I've done plenty of research on it, that is how I formulated my opinion. Also, correlation does not equal causation.

Thats all fine and dandy... im not here to change minds.. im here to inform, so that more people in this country can make informed decisions. I just want transparency, so i can have the right to choose if freaky bio-food is consumed by me, or my family.

I think there is a great deal of misunderstanding regarding GMO's. I don't think being in a first world nation we have much of a right to complain about our food given so many people don't have food, and we are currently in a position in our history to have more food available to us than the human species has even had.

Current studies suggest the GMO crops have no significant yield increases, and promises of less pesticide use are total bull because they are using more pesticides, and herbicides then ever.

I'm fine eating whatever, as long as it tastes good. I guess the option to know whether or not something uses GMO is a good thing so that people who want to avoid it can do so, but for me personally it's not necessary.

I personally do not have any problems with GMOs. I do believe that companies should be as transparent as possible about their products and services, but I don't believe that anyone has a "right" to the information. I only believe in negative rights. No one is entitled to oblige action from someone else.
