Claria shrugged "Possibly, we havent been in a war in 250 years, weve spent that time fighting large beasts in the west and manticores to pass the time" she tapped the field manual "Here is the manual, just write any revisions you want to make anyway" Claria walked to the doorway "Come see me if you want more military stuff to do, give Roxin the blue prints and science stuff hes usually in his laboratory"

Copper nods again. "Yep. this is where him and the Dons have their meetings and whatnot." Just then Malachi was on his way back from eating when he saw the guards walking behind Copper. He started to walk a little faster to catch up to him will he was walking next to him. "Hey,CS. What's going on?"

Copper stopped and quickly turned to him. "Malachi! We were just looking for you. It seems like another nations is trying to make contact with us." He pointed at Blost. "This is the ambassador that came to meet with you." Malachi smiled and hoofed Copper his bat as he walked over to Blost. "Hello, I'm head Don Malachi Semi. It grand to meet another nation. I was just meeting with two other leaders but they had to leave all of a sudden.  But I'm really glad to meet someone from another nation. Plus it's even better cause you be sought after us."

@@Skullbuster,

"Sure thing."

The manual used old tactics... such as large, targetable standing formations, and outdated tecniques. War was now a thing of mobility, if you had to stay still, make a formation that is hard to be hit by artillery. Fighting didnt have to be long and skill-proving, it had to be decisive and deadly. Soon after, a giant crate (of papers) arrived at the dukes office. A very technical (so would be very difficult to understand without help) plan for a steam engine, and a minaturised model were sent to the science departament. Offers for officers to train cidonian troops were offered, but those would probably be turned down. A couple (1000) rifles and about 20 older cannnons were also brought over.

@@Lordav,

The manuals tactics and formations, included the double line, a standard battle formation that arranged short weapons in the front and long and ranged weapons in the back line, this same double line was mentioned in the circle formation, used to determine the location of an unknown enemy and to fight off enemies from all sides, it had intricate details on swarm tactics, which involved several ponies flying around a target, mainly either a fortress or a ship, a tactic that was used to great effect against the airships, it was clear that this was a recently printed book, as a paragraph and diagram about airship combat was listed, there were also tactics on how to fire arrows accurately and effectively while flying and even moving at high speeds, several sections were devoted to manticore combat, and mounted combat, where was a detailed drawing of an armored manticore, with a heavily armored rider, to any pony who never seen one, it would of been a terrifying sight to behold one in real life, desert survival was outlined, sword and spear combat were heavily documented, however as far as combat wise, hoof to hoof was heavily emphasized, in almost every chapter about fighting, and the chapter specifically on hoof to hoof combat was the longest and most complex

With the inplemantation of modern ranged weapons, short ranged weapons and melee are rendered useless, as by the time they reach the enemy line, theyd be dead. Thats why weapons were now outfitted with bayonets, for used in range, as well as melee. Firearms are also really ease to use and train in usage meaning that new huge armies cold be fielded. The formation of a circle would be a tasty taget for artillery peices, a few shots would blast the formation to bits.  With the implementation of shrapnel, swarms would be death zones, a single shot could bring down 60 flyers if shot properly, This, combined with a battery of cannons would be desastrous, if the airships were ready to fire, the swarm wouldve been obliderated.  Armoured units used to be a great deal in Ponssa in the pasgt as well. Superb, unpenetrable polate armour used to cover both nobles and their mounts, yet these were obselete with the devastating power of firearms, mounted units npow had to be a fast, shock unit that could launch small charges and retreat. Fighting hoof to hoof against a tightly packed enemy might usually lead to a distaterous charge due to being outnumbered. The false impression of the victory on the airship was strengthened even though the defeated were gunmen armed with whatever they could find, not proper soldiers.

@@Lordav,

A lot of the tactics involved physically overpowering an opponent , urban warfare was also discussed in great detail, it listed that in the Cidonian Civil War over 250 years ago, most fighting took place in cities unless ambushed in the desert, there were several diagrams on how to fight in cities and inside buildings and palaces, in urban warfare it mentioned stratigies on how to defend a city and how to attack, in the book there were several passages about honor and glory, it stressed that a soldier must be self sufficient in the  event of a dead commander or captain, officers were encouraged to fight on the battle field and lead troops into battle, troops are trained to follow their leader, respect was a huge thing when it came to the power ladder

Physical overpowering could easily be outmatched by tactics and formation. Cities, with patience, could easily be seiged. The city will eventually have to surrender due to food shortages. A seige could only be broken by a relief army.  A surrendered city would stay 'occupied' until recaptured or a peace is signed. (Cant comment on leadership.. thats how all armies worked)

there was a section on the history of Cidonia and how it factors into the tactics, many of the tactics and formations were formed over 250 years ago by King Tallux, who killed his brother and proclaimed him self king, upon doing this he reorganized the army to its modern form, as then was able to defeat the southern kingdom to reunify the land under one rule

Malachi's smile got bigger. "I say we will be more then happy to set up a trade agreement. Agriculture is exactly what we're looking for and lumber is a plus. And don't worry, we understand what you're getting at. We'll be doing most of the buying. Mostly because we don't have many to sell. But we do have man power. Whatever you need we can do it for you. Now come up to my office, I got a bottle scotch that you might be willing to place an order for." He kept smiling while placing a friendly hoof on his back leading him into the building, after grabbing his bat from Copper.

He then stop for a second and reached into his coat pocket and pilled out a leather badge with a crest of a red demon like eye on it. Then he tossed it to Copper. "Copper, be a bud and treat the ambassadors men to the best meal and drink in the city. On me."

Copper sighed but smiled before parking his cart at the front of the building.

Blost turned around to his confused guards and said "Your all dismissed, I will allow that you buy one souvenir to take to your family back home, I want to see you all at the ship by 1800 hours should you not return I assure you there will be trouble, when you return, and you" pointing at the guard holding the flag, "return the flag to our ship and give it to the sailors to raise, once this is done you'l be payed more for doing an extra assignment back home." Blost begins thinks of the scotch, he had a couple at home how would the fare, but he remember what he was doing and said"If we come to a good agreement on trade our council has sent a gift of 100 pounds of grain, as a show of sincerity to our trade agreement, but the council will only let it go if the trade agreement can benefit both sides also I noticed you were talking about others nations, who are they? "We've only sold grain to small time merchants but they never fly their color, and your nation will be written in our history books as the first nation we've contacted officially, which we consider a great honor even if this doesn't go to well. So what is your say of this hombre and who are these others nations you mention, we aren't the war'n type but we would like some bit of info on them, for safety purposes, the council and our president wouldn't want any stone uncovered." Blost says as he walks with the Don into the building.

Malachi led him to the elevator where he hit the top floor button. "Well the first one is the Kaiser Magnum Howitzer of Abendstern. They're pretty war-bred. The second was  King Lordav of Ponssia. They have a pretty dark past. Lots of war, even a genocide of all the Pegasi in their land.  I sent some flyers out to them so they could check out their land while giving them the invitations

We're trying to set up trade routs as well.  We also found out that they have air ships. I was able to get the Kaiser to show us how to build them too. But it seems like he doesn't really want to show us though he's willing to give us a ship.  He seems like the couscous type. Most military nations are I guess." Just then they reached the top floor. Malachi then led him to his office.

"And thank you for your gift, it will help us more then you know. And it's an honer to be in another nations history."  It didn't take them to reach his office. Malachi leaned his bat against the well next to coat rack where he hung his coat and hat.  His office was pretty big but not too much. In the center was a rosewood desk with a red leather chair behind it.  Against one of the walls was a bar, on the other side was a punching bag. The walls had a few plaques, pictures and other collectible things like a pare of old boxing gloves in a glass case with a few pictures of a  boxer.

Malachi then went over to the bar to get two drinks ready. "Before we get into details of the trade agreement, why don't you tell me a little more about Texano. "

The 250 years of warfare have totally changed everything. The tactics were incredibly outsmdated and inefficient. They would have to be totally reformed for Cidonia to stand a chance against a modern army. The entire structure should be totally changed to adapt to moder warfare and weapons

Roxin took a look at the diagrams and blueprints he was given and hung them up on his wall, on his desk was the trainees armor that had been stabbed and shot, beside it, metal ingots, he studied the diagram carefully, it was much more complex than what he was used to, he took several minutes studying it and realized hed need help

the manual also listed the weapons and armor used, their strengths and weaknesses, the standard weapons were swords, spears, and crossbows, with axes listed as a special weapons primarily used by ship crews, shields were employed by placing a shield at the end of a pole and being used with the spear harness that holds pole weapons at the side of the pony while still allowing wing use, armor for ground troops was heavy armor rated to take manticore attacks, a headdress was used to signify lieutenants, a cape was used to signify captains, and a full helmet with a face covering with a cape marked a commander, same was true with all branches, except ship crews and the air core had lighter armor, and captains and commanders in the air core had a colored plume on their helmets

All of those bearing these melee weapons will all be dead by the time they would reach the enemy lines. Sheilds were totally useless. Armour again, was mostly useless as the only advantage it gave was in melee. But the downside was mobility. And that reduction in mobility was a far bigger disadvanage then the bonus in melee. Officers would still be distinct, but via clothing, not armour. The only units that should keep some sort of light armour would be the manticore riders.

Air tactics were mentioned, including air core members with crossbows forming several lines and firing in a line as one wave fired they flew up and another wave fired and they flew in a circle, more devastating attacks included the whole entire mob flying over a group of enemies and unleashing death by all firing at once

Again. a cannon shot would tear giant holes in this circle, the target also firing back would cause even bigger casualties. The 'all firing at once' leads to a giant timehole in which none of the flyers are firing, leading to a totally deadly trap. The idea would be to ensure that the enemy is under fire all the time. the swarm again could easily be destroyed by a somple cannon shot.

Another tactic listed under air combat was the Wind Bomb, listed to be used under extreme circumstances, the fastest fliers would fly at full speed at a group of targets or ships, at a calculated point, the fliers speed would dramatically increase resulting in a large explosion of the air, this move it listed could damage cities and destroy navies, the amount of damage done depending on how many fliers were in formations, fliers would be flying so fast that they appeared to be a blur, unable to be hit by any weapon, the attack on the airships was listed as the first time this technique was used in 250 years, the last one used consisted of the entire air core and obliterated the southern capital, which has since been rebuild, however they was an artists rendition of the destruction, even the mighty fortress was blown apart

The last thing sounded more like a theory so it was skipped. Anyway if a constant circle of flyers were to move in a fast circle, and a shrapnel shot was fired somewhere on the circumferece, that would mean even more casualties would be sustained as, beside the ponies that are shot, others would probably hit the shot themselves, again to mortal effect.

Chariots are farely useless as they gave artillery and infantry huge targets to fire at, they are also inefficient against tightly packed infantry formations. Ballistas would have a much shorter range and would be rendered useless as artillery, also they cant even scratch modern fortifications.

"You don't have to worry about a rebellion. As long as we treat the colony fairly and give them a say in their governing, they won't rebel."

"I bid you welcome from your journey, i hope you had a pleasant trip. I am the head diplomat of the Empire, what would you like to discuss?"

The diplomats marveled at the above ground city, enraptured by the stunning architecture and surprised by the large population. They choose to remain silent all throughout the carriage ride, preferring to take in the city. However, once they reached the government building they regained their composure and walked confidently into the building, greeting the head diplomat with a smile.

"Thank you for your warm welcome, we greatly enjoyed our journey here. However, we'd rather not get into the specifics of our discussion just yet. If you don't mind too much, could you take us on a tour of the city? After that, we will gladly discuss diplomacy with you."

"Why yes of course! My guards and I will gladly escort you! It's either that or the piles of paperwork I do daily to maintain the city. Come come, I'm sure you have much to discuss." The mayor motioned to his guards and they headed outside.

"Thank you. We appreciate your help!" The diplomats followed the mayor and his guards.
