Did the shows target audience change?

I think it's more to do with content rating than demographics. Season one was confined to the E/I rating, which is much more restrictive than the TV-Y rating it carries. Visible violence (especially if there's a lack of education involved) like the brawl in A Canterlot Wedding, the violence in both Daring Don't and Power Ponies, and the Twilight/Tirek fight aren't allowed under that rating.

That might partially explain the shift in quality after violence became an option.

I highly doubt that they knew the show was going to be a big hit way back in season one.

wouldn't an easy explanation be that, that they've simply been trying harder since season one?

I mean season one is still great, but you gotta admit the episodes are getting much more interesting.

and with the next season looking better than ever, who knows what could happen.

I think most of us can agree the show is changing for the better.

That remains to be seen for me. I made a topic a few weeks ago detailing why I think Twilight's Kingdom may be the start of the show's drop in quality.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about the age rating being changed. So the show got less restrictive of its content after Season 1, so it could more easily appeal to older kids in addition to the younger kids.

i believe the reason why it changed was because of how the kids the show targeted to grew up. hasbro still wanted to be targeted to those children, but they also wanted to be for everyone else.
idk if its true or not, but that's how i feel about this. ouo
