The Problem With Requests?

MyUnusedAccount

Recommended Posts

Hello everypony, I'm new to the site, but I saw this thread and I had an issue that has been eating into my brain for a little while so far.

I myself am a teenager without a bank account. I don't upload money online for reasons, and I don't have any DA points or such. So, when everyone says 'I'll comission art' I always feel a little left out.

So I went on a few other brony sites (FimFiction, Derpiboo, etc.) and asked around if anyone did requests, where you just ask and they draw it for you.

The reaction were comments like this:

"You think you're so good at ponies you can just ask around without offering anything? Get a job."

"Oh, so it's like 'Hello, I need you to build my house, for free of course, please get in touch with me."

"Just stop asking, if you're a good person you'd go learn how to draw."

What's with the request hate..?

@@Kellie,

ooh ooh, pick me, pick me!

Nah, I'm kidding. I'll wait in line. <3

@@Soft Stroke,

I usually only go after request threads when they pop up, as that's a 'free pass' to ask. However... lot of jerks out there. Most artists will give you a lower quality drawing when you ask for a request, but some people are just mean about it. Unfortunately, you can't really stop these people from being the way they are, so I just browse request threads on here.

I don't think that artists hate requesting much, more so than it is that commissions allow them to get money. These artists are looking out to get some money so they can, say, move out of their old house or get a better job, so in an effort to do so they'll have to ask from other people that they only allow commissions. They do have lives outside of making art, of course.

And as pointed out, most of the requests are of low quality, but usually for a good reason. Because of how much effort these artists have to put into all of their work for their customers, they'd have to ask them to pay them. If they were requests, the artist would get even more people to ask them to do a drawing to the point where the artist would get exhausted and would half-ass all of these requests. Or, at least that's what my experiences as somebody with a Request Shop was like.

You could go ask request shops! Artist do have to eat and there's always so many requests. They really satisfy quantity more than quality. And then there's always the occasional demanding jerk to deal with.

You could always try art trades. But keep in mind they won't always accept them.
