Why isn't baking a special talent for Pinkie's family?

The Cakes' specialties are baked goods, Sugar Belle's is also baked goods, and the Apples grow and sell apples along with baked apple-flavored desserts.

You'd think the "Pie" family would share a similar passion for baking, but instead, they're all about rocks. Why?

Pinkie discovered the power of parties before her powers of being a baking god. Hence she got that cutie mark instead of a baking related one.

 

Also it could be said that baking food for parties falls under her cutie-mark powers. After all. So far as we've seen, Pinkie doesn't exactly cook healthy foods... most would induce a heart attack withing minutes with ther sugar levels and her punch is so strong it blurred Rainbow Dash's memory of an all night party which is pretty shocking given RD's fitness and perchant for cider XD

It is possible that might have been the case in the past of that that particular branch of the family is more into rocks than baking, with families especially large ones that are often branches and parts of the family that are a tad different. The Oranges are a branch of the Apple Family and we saw just how different they were from most of the Apples, it was literally comparing Apples with Oranges. And we know how different Pinkie Pie is to her immediate family but she could very well have other family members that perhaps she has more in common with.

Well, sometimes siblings just have different personalities. I mean, the whole Apple family has apple-related cutie marks but that doesn't guarantee Applebloom will have an apple one.

True, but there is also the fact that their called the "Pie" family and yet Pinkies immediate family is into Rock Farming or Geology in the case of Maud.

Often times, it seems that families have similar talents and marks, but obviously that doesn't always have to be the case.  Not that different from real life, actually.

Pinkie Pie bakes pink frosting pies and Maud Pie bakes mud pies from her rock farming.

Her special talent is connected to baking, but isn't baking itself. A ponie's special talent is what they do the best, that doesn't mean it's their ONLY skill but it is a central one. So if being a good baker helps Pinkie throw better parties, she would presumably become better at baking.
