This Confederate Flag thing has gone too far.

Most southerners don't even see it as a symbol of racism, it's mostly seen as a symbol of southern pride. You can't really make a sweeping blanket statement that everyone who owns the flag is a "racist hick", that's silencing the other the other side and denying them a point of view by labeling them regardless of whether the label is false or not.

 

Also because one murderer owned the flag that means it should be banned? That logic has been used to attack video games, movies, rock/metal music, comics and even cartoons. There's a reason why people think this "slippery slope" line of thinking has no place in making decisions for the country and they're right.

I said this in another thread and I'll say it here.

I'm not really defending the South's history or anything nor am I doing so because there was some really horrific stuff done in the past. At the same time though many countries are guilty of committing atrocities. Even my own country (Canada) is guilty as we only shut down the last Residential School twenty years ago (That's not the only thing either. Our history text books go out of their way to shame us for our history without even acknowledging our accomplishments). I'm only arguing against a ban because I don't believe on infringing on anyones' rights. If you want to remove the flag from government buildings, by all means go ahead. But forcing businesses to cease selling the flag and anything with the flag on it (including shows like Dukes of Hazzard and any Civil War games), censoring history by removing any Historical Confederate Monuments and silencing anyone who opposes by labeling them as racists even though most of the time it's not true and even going out of the way to destroy some people's lives for it then that's being a tyrant.

 

And again despite the fact that most people don't even see the the flag as a racist symbol and over the course of 150 years have turned the flag into a symbol of southern pride and not symbol of racism.

 

Know you can say "B-bu-but the KKK exists and uses it, so it must be a symbol of racism! Southern Pride is racist!" until your blue in the face but the KKK are only a minority of southerners and never will represent the majority. It's now just a flag that racists happen to use, just like the US Flag.

 

Your post just reeks of desperation to prove that everyone who defends the flag is racist. Let me tell you something, there have been more atrocities committed under the US Flag and the British Union Jack than there have ever been under the Confederate Flag. If you want to ban the Confederate Flag then you have to ban the other flags with atrocities behind their pasts, otherwise it's pretty hypocritical to ban that flag alone.

 

This argument that everyone that has the flag is a racist is and always will be an invalid statement.

Banning the flag is just going to cause more butthurt rednecks to become even more obnoxious and annoying... I believe they should keep the flag at display at historic museums and historical battle sites of the Civil War but other than that I could careless about seeing that flag being used against people as a symbol of hate/rascim. I could careless if they ban it from people buying it really. But they definitely should respect it's true meaning and leave it to be at those historical places.

So if any random person went on racially motivated killing spree holding USA flag, I suppose USA will have to change its flag or else it is inherently racist; it doesn't matter that it's only 1 individual out of 300 million people because it's still supposedly racist because of that one individual and opinions of 300 million people are completely irrelevant.

 

And that's the thing, you keep saying those who wave Confederate flag are racists when most people who actually wave it are against racism; you're accusing people of being something they're not. Pride in one's country, region, etc. does not at all automatically mean you believe that your people are superior to others. Otherwise I suppose we should condemn all national pride sentiments and ban country days worldwide (celebrating 4th of July must mean you think USA is superior country and all who disagree or are not a part of it are sub-humans).

Never did I state and know for a fact that not all who fly this flag are racist. I've met quite a few racist who fly the rebel flag, but even then, they flew it as a symbol Southern pride, not racism.
