sleepypony 180 July 25, 2015 Share July 25, 2015 I want to be able to draw some ponies, and was wondering if anybody knew of a good guide to look at from their experience?
inactive_user 367 July 25, 2015 Share July 25, 2015 Le pony guides galore: http://mlpdrawingschool.deviantart.com/gallery/36711401/Tutorials 3 A huge thank you to my great friend AppleGearRising for this signature picture Thank you Apple, I love it so much! Normally I would just post the picture, but as it seems, it is too big to put in the signature here, so here is the link to my MLP personality test results: http://www.bronyland.com/pony-personality-test/?q=OTU0Mnw5NDMzMzA (I am mostly like Fluttershy, in case you couldn't already guess.) Bojo 1,172 July 25, 2015 Share July 25, 2015 Making a base sketch with circles and lines truly helps, then you begin making the lines of the body and then you begin adding the details. I know it might not seem like the greatest tip ever, but I helped me A LOT. Watch this video from aweebugger to see what I mean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUbAiyU7Ym0 Also, that guide Nick got for you is awesome!!! 2 Eeyup... this signature was made by: @Sparkle Speed
Gaviera 52 July 26, 2015 Share July 26, 2015 (edited) Think in 3D. I can't really recommend pony guides, as they just have you memorize a small recipe for making ponies, and you wind up not being able to draw anything else. I cannot recommend THIS guide enough. It demonstrates very well what you should do whenever you draw anything! Play around with basic shapes and make them interact in three dimensions. after that, all you need to know are the the gists* of proportions, and it all comes down to basic shape perspective. Check out her other tutorials too, they're very useful! *(I say the gists, because ideally, no two characters should look the same!) GenderIsAnIllusion 2,177 July 26, 2015 Share July 26, 2015 Grab a pencil, draw something, and hope it looks good.... So far it's not working for me.... My ponies still loon like stick figures with huge heads...... 1 My peep is against bullying.... LordSwinton 759 July 26, 2015 Share July 26, 2015 Honestly, practise is your best friends. Personally, I don't find step by step guides that useful but if it helps you, go for it. You could try tracing some screencaps, they help you get familiar with the pony anatomy 1 Click here to boop that snoot, or here to request boops from Felix! Gonna second this, at least if you want to learn to draw other things besides ponies (at the very least you'll be able to draw good backdrops for your ponies) and it'll give you a good skill/hobby that can be turned into a job later maybe. The source I personally used was here, starting from the beginning I've developed a good eye for shapes and forming designs in 3D even if I don't follow a strict practice schedule since I'm not intending to be a professional artist.
Emerald Star 513 July 26, 2015 Share July 26, 2015 Start out with the basic shapes and lines, and always draw a base sketch first. Look at some different references and guides, play around until you have a decent grasp of pony anatomy. I can't recommend any specific guides, but draw a lot and be patient. It takes time and practice. 1 DeviantArt:http://emera33.deviantart.com/

inactive_user 367 July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 thanks so much everyone sorry I haven't responded sooner, been off for a bit. thank you all very much can't wait to start drawing! I kinda want to make a scene with two ponies with objects One other recommendation I've noticed that will really help, more so for if you are hoping to gain a bit of attention and valuable critique from others on your drawings as well by the way, if you aim for making your drawings actually tell some kind of "story" of some sort (and I use that term loosely in general for this situation here) rather than just making them basic sketches of an individual character and nothing else or something, it will really help to draw more notice to your drawings, as people will notice and identify the actual "message" behind a drawing or "story being told" as opposed to being presented just a random drawing out of mid-air. Though, at the same time... Maybe for the moment, being you are just beginning, it may be better for you skill-progression wise to simply focus on base characters for now and not worrying so much about something like creating a visual "story" with it. Though it is still a nice practice to get into if you are really going to get "into" drawing a whole lot. ^3^ Just another little tip, up to you though, do whatever feels most comfortable for you at the moment.
