I'm just going to say it, Season 1 wasn't that good

I just recently rewatched some Season 1 episodes and one thing that struck very much out for me, is how good the animation has become over the years. If i compare an episode like boast busters, with the animation of Rarity investigates (which has some of the best animation i have seen in the show) it's like watching 2 shows with 2 different budgets.

 

If i would compare Season 1 with the rest of the series, i would say it's still better then Season 3, but not really like all time greatest material. I still love Season 2 and 4 too much for that.

 

Season 1 had great episodes like Cutie Mark Chronicles and Applebuck seasons, but also bad episodes like boast busters and show stoppers. And also episodes that i find overrated like Sonic Rainboom and the stare master.

 

Nostalgia is nice and all, but it should never blind our judgement.

Then there is this "Faust Vision" nonsense. You know what Faust wanted?

That is what her original designs looked like. 

 

Well, no, not really. These are some of the original G1 ponies with Faust's unique drawing style applied to them. Their names are Surprise, Firefly, Sparkler, Twilight, Applejack and Posey.

 

Everyone keeps bashing them as some half-assed draft designs but let's face it, they are official pony characters from the 80's. When Faust first got to work on a new MLP series, she planned to re-use some of the original characters in her show. 

 

She was based off of this G1 pony, also named Surprise:

 

 

But somewhere in development, Lauren Faust lost the license for Surprise and based it off of G3's Pinkie Pie

 

Exactly. The rumor has it that due to some copyright issues Faust had to give these designs up and create a cast of brand new characters. (Well, okay, she was allowed to keep Applejack for some reason.)
