Thoughts on fan meetups.

At first, I thought it was really weird to meet people who say they are going to gather at x location and y time to discuss MLP via the Internet. Never, ever in any other fandom have I attended in-person meetups with other fans unless it was part of some official convention where the organizing is done by some official body.

But, I have attended five local meetups in my area since last October, and I really like them. For example, I particularly like the diversity in the people I meet - yes, most of the people present are between the ages of 15 and 30, but the diversity of backgrounds and occupations is astounding.

Yes, we get many high school and college students. But we also get a ton of working adults as well.

For example, through these meetups, I've met a trader who works at the equity desk for a big bulge bracket investment bank, a corporate lawyer, a saleswoman who works for a big software company, a guy who works in mortgage securitization (the same sort of activity that helped bring about the financial crisis), a medical resident, a guy who works in R&D at a well-known medical devices company, an IT consultant, and more.

If you are hesitant about meeting people through the Internet, don't be. You'd be surprised at who bronies exactly are - even if most of them are relatively young. We are an odd, diverse group of individuals with almost no connection with one another - with the exception of the fact that we all watch and enjoy MLP.

And plus, if you are looking for a job and want to network, you will never know who might show up to one of these.

I did a fan meet-up.

It was a blast! :)

I really recommend it,

I know that it can seem scary since they are strangers, but as long as you bring a friend you'll be fine.

I've had a lot of bad experience with fandom meetups offline. I know people will always say they're wonderful and all to vouch for the community, but my experience has been the opposite. Well, a clean slate for a new fandom, I suppose... maybe bronies are the ones who don't look at porn on their laptops in public.

I've done a few outside of MLP. You get a few weirdos, but that's part of the deal. Most people are generally friendly and are quite social.

How were your experiences? In what way were they bad?

I would be interested in going to a meet up, but I don't have a friend to take with me and it would have to be pretty close to me with my currently unemployed status.

What part of the country do you live in? If you live close to a major urban center, there are good chances of a group that meets there.

I'm not the type of person that likes going to social gatherings, so I probably wouldn't enjoy a going to a meetup as much as most people.

Then again, there's practically no bronies I know of between Vancouver BC and Seattle, so I don't really have an option.

I believe that a Seattle group does exist... Ever hear of Everfree? It's like BronyCon, but in Washington State. But, if you are not that social to begin with, then that's fine.

I would love to go to a fan-meetup if I could, sadly the closest one is about one hour away and my parents barely trust me going 10 minutes away. :/

I think it's an experience to meet others that share the same interests with you. Plus sometimes they seem better then some of your friends. :P

Keep track of EQD. They usually post upcoming meetups on the Nightly Roundup. I believe I saw a St. Louis meetup not too long ago.

Thanks I will keep an eye on it. St. Louis is about a 5 hour drive from where I live I believe.

I really want to do these, but It'd be awkward having to have either my parents, or my non-brony bros driving me there. I hope this fandom's still around when I get my license. Which will just be in a year.
