All races of pony have magic

I was either reading or watching something a while back and Lauren Faust said something about all of the races of MLP having their own "magic" of course pegasi and earth ponies (and other races) don't have the obvious magical ability like Unicorns and alicorns do. I have come to a conclusion that individual ponies of mlp do have their own magic. Rainbow Dash has her own light trail when she flies. (and if you say that is because she is flying really fast then I have to tell you in the Hurricane Fluttershy episode all of the ponies were flying very fast and none of them had their own trail.) Pinkie has her own... Wel... Everything, she can break the fourth wall she has pinkie sense, she knows things from every dimension and she can fit things in the tiniest of spaces! Fluttershy can talk to animals unlike any other pony. Sadly I have yet to find any other special magic in the rest of the characters. Just those 3.....

This has been brought up a few times before ,

The strongest evidence in my opinion, 

would be Tirek,

In his little montage with discord,

He steals magic not only from Unicorns but pegasi and earth ponies as well.

The pegasi lose their ability to fly and the earth ponies lose their strength.

which would suggest that pegasi need more than wings to fly(which may explain some of the logical "errors" in the show, where pegasi appear to hover in air without moving their wings).

Tirek also seemed to gain quite a bit of youth when absorbing earth pony magic,

Which means Earth ponies might have magically-enhanced life spans,

This would explain the conflicting statements between

granny smith saying she was around when ponyville was founded

and also twilight statement in winterwrap that might suggest ponyville being around for hundreds of years.

Yeah, it was kind of explicitly stated that Tirek was able to steal "earth pony and unicorn magic" too.

 

This would explain the conflicting statements between

granny smith saying she was around when ponyville was founded

and also twilight statement in winterwrap that might suggest ponyville being around for hundreds of years.

 

I don't think a background joke about Granny Smith being old as dirt indicates that every earth pony lives hundreds of years. The Apples in particular are just ridiculously healthy.

all ponies need to have magic in order to get a cutie mark - the cutie mark contains the magic, and the latent abilities, of the pony. It's what makes their eyes nice and bright and is evidenced to affect both when tirek drains ponies of their magic, and strength.

 

also not all earth ponies have ridiculous strength - this is evidenced by pinkie pie trying to do applejacks job and just not.. being able to - and they are both earth ponies (and arguably related, and both work on a farm, pinkies being a rock farm of all things, so you'd think she'd be even stronger, considering how strong maude is).

 

so the question becomes - does gummy have magic?

Earth Pony magic allows them to skillfully tend the land, grow crops and other things, they have a special connection to the ground which they stand on. 

 

Pegasus magic, from what we seen, gives them flight and also the ability to alter the weather. 

 

Unicorn magic, well, we have seen that plenty of times.

 

I think those are the 3 in their most basic forms, but all 3 races do have magic of their own that works in unison.

Well yes, clearly each race is magical in it's own way. This notion isn't contested by anyone, right? You receive an inherent ability from your race, then a personalized ability from your cutie mark.

Alicorn magic is different to unicorn magic.. Unlike unicorns who's magic can be depleted after doing strenuous magical tasks.. alicorns magic does not deplete so rapidly.. Like back in the time when Luna and Celestia were only recently princesses and before they got their cutie marks.. In that time, Star Swirl and 10 unicorns had the task of raising and lowering the sun and moon, and after a while they lost their magic forever, an act of self-sacrifice for the good of all of Equestria.. as did the replacement unicorns until there were no more full-grown unicorns left to perform the task.. leaving Star Swirl to raise the moon himself and thus, through the strain, he lost his magic too.. Star Swirled asked Luna and Celestia to become the guardians of the sun and moon.. He knew and explained that they would be ok as alicorn magic is different and would actually make them stronger.. so it seems alicorns grow more powerful the more difficult the spell or task of said spell is.. It is how Luna and Celestia grew stronger, and were also able to restore the magic of all the unicorns who lost their magic..

 

 

As for the magic of all the pony races.. This can be categorized by passive and active magic..

 

Passive magic: Magic that is not activated for a purpose, but instead is natural and the user does not need to be aware of this for it's effects to be present..

Active magic Magic that IS activated for a purpose.. such as using their own energy to perform tasks unachievable without magic..

 

Earth ponies:

Dominantly Passive-based when it comes to magic..

Some earth ponies do have some active magic abilities which allows them to perform certain feats (almost always based on their talent)

 

Examples of passive magic performed by Earth ponies:

- Heightened physical abilities, this is often limited to a certain task or profession, such as Maud breaking though rock, and Applejack kicking trees hard enough to make all the ripe apples fall..

- Pinkie's "pinkie sense" can be considered a passive magical trait, although unique to her..

 

Examples of active magic performed by Earth ponies:

- In emergencies physical abilities are heightened even further, like Applejack being able to stop a cart full of elderely ponies doing down a hill (With applejack disguised as "Mare do well") Or when Maud had an extreme burst of speed and pretty much gained flight abilites to save Pinkie from a falling boulder..

 

Pegasus ponies:

Can be considered half passive-based and half-active based when it comes to magic..

They are fairly strong and skilled at flying suggesting some passive-magic to assist, but do have some more definite active magic abilities..

 

Examples of passive magic performed by Pegasus ponies:

- Pegasi have the passive magic ability of walking on clouds and not falling through..

- They may also have passive magic for increased flight strength as well as endurance for sustained and long duration flights..

- It's highly possible that their passive magic also forces more wind from their wings giving them more control and strength.. Allowing for the feats such as creating tornados..

 

Examples of active magic performed by Pegasus ponies:

- Pegasi can manipulate the weather, likely by sending energy through clouds by means of physical contact, resulting in forced lightning strikes and precipitation..

- It's likely that pegasi can use their active magic abilities to increase their passive ones.. allowing for them to have increase wind power, and thus a great increase in speed and acceleration.. as well as improved tornado creation and control..

 

Unicorn ponies:

Dominantly active-based magic users..

They are highly skilled in directing energy to perform feats in the form of "spells"

 

Examples of passive magic performed by Unicorn ponies:

- Possible increase in active magic power when distressed, scared or angry..

 

Examples of active magic performed by Unicorn ponies:

- The ability to direct energy from their horns to perform "spells" allowing magical tasks.. from simple tasks to seemingly impossible feats..

- Unicorns can manipulate energy (though dominantly their own aura) to do things such as convert energies to other forms.. such as light (as shown by light spells), heat, sound, and many others.. as well as envelope objects and direct that energy to lift objects by releasing enough energy with enough force downwards to equal the weight of the object making it motionless under the effect of gravity.. (thus telekinesis.. levitating items..)

- With their manipulation of energy, skilled unicorns can use this to also manipulate matter itself.. some can create lightning by forming plasma from the molecules in the air around them..

Pegasi can also walk on clouds.  It makes sense if they have "magic" in them.  But then, how come gryphons can walk on clouds the exact same way?

 

As for the Earth Ponies, I agree that they have some kind of connection with the earth.  Celestia stated that Tirek had robbed them of their power and that they'd no longer be able to till the earth.  And the Earth Ponies in Hearth's Warming Eve seemed to have dominion over the food production industry due to this skill.  

 

Not quite sure how it works though. Perhaps the Earth Ponies are imparting some of their vitality into the ground as they work it.  Or perhaps they all just have "green hooves".
