Usually Midnight would be up earlier, but given he was on vacation he slept in to the ripe old time of 7am. still he was not surprised that the morning deliveries necessitated that Copper wake up even earlier.

 

He proceeded to the kitchen where he read the note. He entered wondering what foods his gracious host had prepared.

What waited for Midnight was an assortment of cashews and a warm piece of bread, in which had a small dosage of blueberry jam in the mix.  Copper knew to have some food similar to the ones in the Archback to make him feel more at home.

 

Meanwhile, Copper was ready to make his rounds around Ponyville.  He waved thanks like usual to his boss and trotted out to town, smiling like he does as he greeted the new day.

Midnight made short work of the provided food, which tasted great, but it was not quite enough to satisfy him. He returned to his room and had a bit of the dried meat he had brought. It was understandable that Copper would not have anticipated the portion sizes his metabolism demanded, but he was not going to say anything as he did not want to put a bigger strain on Copper's resources. He decided a quick run about town would be a good way to start his day so he started out in about the same pathway that he had been shown through the day before.

Copper had already finished up on the east side of town, including Sugarcube Corner, when he had seen Midnight do a run around Ponyville.  He smiled and waved at him when he passed, then continued on his work, heading to the west side of the town for his deliveries.

When Midnight noticed Copper he headed over to him, "Good morning Copper, how's your day been so far? Also, what exactly do you have planned for us today? I would like to be prepared for whatever it is after all." Midnight was indeed curious as to what Copper had planned, though he got the feeling that it would not be too intensive.

Copper saw Midnight approach him and smiled at him.  He shrugged when asked about plans for today.  "Nothing that comes to mind.  I guess we could take a quick trip to Canterlot and head over to the place where you get your tabloid of the history and the happenings throughout the nations outside of Equestria.  Of course that comes after my work.  Sound like a plan?"

Midnight shrugged, "I guess so, though Canterlot is a bit of a train-ride away. Do remember, I agreed to help with the meeting between the changeling and the elements today. Perhaps we should visit the tabloid tomorrow and we can make a day of you showing me how the whole place has changed in the last thousand years. Though I agree, your job comes first."

Copper nodded.  "I remember.  I never did say today we do it.  It was just a suggestion.  If you wanna walk with me while I do my run around Ponyville, you can, if you want some exercise.  I understand if you don't, you don't to get in the way of my job, but sometimes I have somepony walk around with me just to have a conversation.

Midnight gave a more indifferent shrug, "I'm fine either way, If you don't think my presence would disrupt your work then I'd be happy to keep you company now. If you just want to get your work done quickly without worrying about me interfering then I understand."

Copper nodded.  "Well then let's get moving!"  He and Midnight started making the rounds around Ponyville, with Copper delivering the mail needed in the houses, as well as making a few idle comments from time to time.  Copper was almost finished with his deliveries when he asked, when nopony was around, "Hey, Midnight.  What would you do if you were a changeling and you had to defend your race from Equestria's trials?"

Midnight looked confused, he was first of all surprised at the line of questioning and the public nature of the questions. Just because they couldn't see anyone did not mean that nobody was listening. "Hypothetically of course, I would answer honestly and hope for justice in the end." He phrased his comments in such a way that any eavesdroppers would not be alerted to the existence of other changelings.

Copper gave a confused look, then realized why Midnight said what he said.  He blushed embarrassingly and said, "Should not have said that.  Sorry."  He looked, just to make sure nopony was looking, and said, "My bad.  I know I shouldn't say things like that in public.  I'll be careful next time."

Midnight made a placating gesture. "Don't worry yourself too much about it, it's a hard secret to keep sometimes, but its one you must until they are ready for the world. It may never happen, but you earned their trust and I'd hate for you to break it. They don't trust easily the first time, they may never trust you the second time."

 

He sighed, "Let's get a move-on then, I don't suppose too much is left of your route yes?"

Copper nodded.  "Yeah.  Just a couple more houses then it's back to the Service building.  Let's go."

 

He and Midnight finished up the rounds in Ponyville, from Sugarcube Corner to Twilight's castle.  Once they were finished, they went back to the Service building, with Copper saying, before he opened the door.  "It'll only be a few minutes before my shift is done.  You can stay if you like, or you can fetch you-know-who to go to Twilight's castle once the shift is over."

Midnight nodded as he started to walk away. "Good plan, I'll go get the special guest while you finish off your shift. We'll meet you at Twilight's castle in a few minutes then."

 

That said he started trotting off towards the edge of town in the direction of Whitetail woods.

Copper nodded, as he saw Midnight leave to where the changeling would be.  He went inside the service building, finished his shift, then trotted to Twilight's castle.  He knocked on the door, in which Rainbow Dash answered.  "Hey, Sonic.  What's up?"

 

"It's almost time to meet them." Copper said, wasting no time to get to the point.

 

Rainbow nodded, letting Copper in before closing the door.  The rest of the mane six gathered around the Cutie Map, nodding at both as they approached.

There was a knock on the outer doors of the castle. Midnight stood waiting next to a young mare of very ordinary description. Utterly unmemorable other than the mark, a circle with a slightly off vertical line running through it, the mathematical symbol for an empty set.

The mare looked nervous, but determined.

Copper was quick to trot to the door.  He opened it, revealing Midnight and a mare who looked like an ordinary mare.  His warm smiled greeted them.  "Please, come in.  And welcome to Ponyville, ma'am."

 

He moved out of the way for them to come in the castle.  The mane Six greeted the newcomer as well.

The mare nodded, a nervous smile coming to her face as she entered the castle. "I've actually lived here for a while, I do know all of you, though I suppose you wouldn't recognize me like this. Intentionally of course, I don't want you to think of me any differently that you did before."

 

Midnight entered the castle as well, he looked questioningly towards Twilight. "Where would you like to hold the interview? Away from windows would be preferable if possible."

Twilight thought for a moment before responding to Midnight and the mare.  "I think our sleeping chamber would be a good fit for this.  The window there has a curtain that can block off the view from us while we interview you.  Does that sound okay to you?"

The mare nodded, "That sounds perfect, if you would lead the way? I'd love to get started as soon as possible. No doubt you all have many questions, so the sooner we start the earlier it will be when we finish." Midnight hoped it wouldn't take too long, but these interviews were always interesting for him to watch. He often learned something new at each one.

Twilight nodded.  "Then follow us, you two."

 

She led the mane six, Copper, Midnight, and the changeling to the sleeping chamber, where Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy closed the curtains at the window to block the view.  "Make yourself comfortable to one of our beds and we'll get started." Twilight said.

The mare looked around and shrugged before simply taking a seat in the nearest bed. Midnight elected to simply stand nearby, placing himself in a position where he would not be in the way, but could quickly move to a defensive position if things ever turned violent. Given the brash nature of Loyalty he thought it a prudent precaution.

 

"So... I guess I'm ready when you are."

Twilight nodded and made herself comfortable on her bed.  The rest took seats to the floor and waited for the first question from Twilight, who said, "So here is our first question.  Do changelings have only one common emotion to feed on, or are there separate emotions to feed on for certain hives?"

The mare looked contemplative, more thinking on how to answer the question then on what the answer was. "Well, changelings feed off the emotional energy given off by sentient creatures naturally. Like food, different emotions have different 'flavors' so while we can utilize all emotions each hive has one or two preferred emotions, usually the emotions utilized in incubation."
