You know, the humane five are actually quite worthless in these films

All the focus in these films seem to go to Sunset Shimmer and Twilight, while the humane five collectively do almost nothing of note.

They just don't really stand out. They're all lumped together at the bottom of the hierarchy of importance. They certainly don't come up with solutions to problems, and their involvement in the solutions can at best be described as serving as batteries to power up friendship magic.

Another thing that really strikes me is that in three films, they've received almost no development at all. Meanwhile, there's PLENTY of development to go around for Sunset and Twilight.

In Rainbow Rocks, they each spat with each other and eventually fall under the Sirens' influence, while Sunset Shimmer and Twilight unsurprisingly remain immune.

Meanwhile, Friendship Games literally treats them as batteries, as they hardly do a thing in the climax but have their magic taken by Sunset to power her up. Though admittedly, they do more to stand out in this film, as evident by Rainbow Dash's motivational song and Applejack's assisting Twilight with archery.

At least they're far more useful to these films than the mane five, but that's all they really have going for them.

I agree, and though they're the mane 5, being season 1 carbon copies of the pony mane 6 is what is holding back any development. I'm sure the writers think "why develop these mane guys, sans Sunset, when they are already developed in the sister franchise? What's the point in re- developing them in Eqg?" And so they don't.

But here's what i wanna see. Now that SS has been wanting more back in Equestria, and doesn't feel challenged in the human world- the writers should throw her back in Equestria, taking the Equestrian magic (and the Sirens) with her.

Instead of SciTwi stepping up as the leader in Sunset's absence, Applejack should, since she's the most down to earth. (And is the second in command in Equestria's mane 6) And SciTwi can stay in the group, learning about friendship.

Sunset goes back home, like everyone wants, Applejack gets more love, like everyone wants, DHX has more story potential open to them, from the change. Win win

That is exactly the reason why I HATE the term "human mane6"!

(That and because they already have an official group name -> The Rainbooms.)

Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Rarity are (at best) supporting characters in the Equestria Girls movies.

The only two main reason why they exist are:

  1. Connecting the movies more to the show
  2. Giving Sunset and/or Twilight their power at the climax of the movie(s)

But to be honest, I think it is okay that way.

yeah, agree'd 100%.

They're basically secondary characters in these films; its especially noticeable in the third film where they're reduced to being just power batteries for the "Actual" important characters (Twilight/sunset).

I gotta wonder, how well exactly is sunset and twilight selling? I know EQG is selling poorly, and I have to wonder, are the sunset toys equaling or exceeding the others in sales? because if so, it seems like its a very poor business plan to ignore the other 5 and focus on a couple characters in the movies when sales would indicate you'd want to do a more even approach :/

I agree, but it's no different than the show. The only difference is in the show, there are multiple episodes to switch focus, while in the movies, they don't have enough time to switch. (Thats why I would love an EQG TV series).

So I wouldn't really say they're worthless, just haven't had time to shine.

The S5 premier they did a good group job; Similarly best night ever and even return of harmony (to an extent) did some good focus on the others.

The season 5 premiere was a fluttershy episode to a large extent. The others, except Twilight, only served to enhance the gloomy feeling of the cult brainwashing.

Best Night was pretty good, but that also had a lot of set-up that made you feel invested, even though each pony had ~2 minutes each.

Return to Harmony. That was the Discord one, right? That was a Twilight episode, the others were arguably antagonists, or anti-heros.

It's just not possible to flesh out 6 characters w/ complete arcs in a 90-minute movie, let alone a 22 minute episode.

I agree, they're just here to show what their human counterparts look like and nothing more aside from helping Twi and Sunset save the day and fight the bad guys off. After all, these movies just don't have enough time to flesh them properly, plus, they're pretty similar to the season 1 selves of their pony counterparts. Even worse are the Shadowbolts, who got heavily advertised for the third film yet did not receive the focus they truly deserved, all of it going instead for a poor villain who feels like a lame Madame Medusa wannabe. I mean, Lemon Zest got just 2 lines in the whole movie!

Lemon zest was better than sunny flair. She got ONE line and never appeared again except in the background, at least lemon zest did a few things.

Honestly, Friendship games plot was a trainwreck. It feels like they had two plotlines that they wanted to do (Possibly one being mandated by hasbro?) but failed due to that.

Like, the shadowbolts in promo material and in design seemed to have been set up as nega-mane six and the whole "Shadowbolts vs. wondercolts" thing seem to have been designed to try and have the two move past their rivalry for friendship. But the TRUE plot was about twilight, and the shadowbolts had virtually NOTHING to do with that. So the shadowbolts and sports part ended up being a giant shaggy dog story with the shadowbolts just randomly becoming best friends with the wondercolts at the end.

Are you telling me that the secondary characters are less focused on then the main characters? What a huge problem this is.

I think the problem is the other 5 being demoted from "Mane characters" to "Secondary cheer squad" is kind of ACTUALLY the problem. That is exactly what people object to.

Oh, so was I wrong all along, then? So there is no "humane seven" when it comes to Equestria Girls? I was overestimating their worth the entire time in thinking that they weren't simply there to fill space?

Makes sense, I guess.

Well, Twilight had always been the star of the show. And you can't really focus on 6 characters at the same time.

Well, they're secondary characters not background characters. There's a small difference between the two.

Yeah, the Human Five are pretty much just walking props. Then again, Hasbro likely have the writers in a chokehold. "You can't write these characters in a different direction! I don't care if these are humans that grew up on Earth and would be forced to grow up very differently. It'll confuse the little girls! You're lucky I let you get away with Sci-Twi!"

You know, in the art of equestria book, the show makers outright state that all of the mane six are mane characters. So its straight from the crews mouth that they should be all important as mane characters.

This is one thing that's really annoying.

They haven't delved AT ALL into what makes the six different from their pony selves, sans sci twi.

I really hope that they do better in the next movie, because FG really turned me off to the series completely.
