"I can relate to that, more than you may think.  It's hard when something is so close, yet it feels like it's forever out of reach."  Bashful could only think of his Mother right now, and how close she came to having it all.  Then to be shunted off and scattered, it was more humiliation than they could bare.  He could only imagine that same feeling had to be running through Gold Dust.  He just had the misfortune of being alone with it.

"It eats at you.  No amount of pancakes will make that go away."

After a moments pause, Bashful Thread perked up his ears and smiled "But it does help to have a full belly!"

"Besides, what's life without a little challenge?  Everyone has them, and the only thing you can do is grit your teeth and keep trotting through it, hopefully with a smile and a plate full of pancakes!"

Gold Dust returned the smile in kind. "Well, the whole point is that nothing is out of reach, at least not forever. I mean, how else do you expect me to be so content with unemployment?"

"The diamond family wields their wealth well enough, and attitude is no ground for resentment in my opinion. As far as I'm concerned, they've earned their stay at the top," Gold Dust elaboration finished with a tone more akin to exposing a bitter truth, than passive acceptence. "The princesses however... that's another story for another time, perhaps even another pony," Gold Dust contiued while gently fideling with his Yellow Saphire ring.

"I... I don't know.  I'd rather not think of my life before I met Orange Lace and Fire Cracker.  They've given me a home in Ponyville, taught me to sew, helped me get a life here.  If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be having this conversation with you."  A slight nervous smirk left the corner of his lip.  "That's just how it works."

"I am reminded of the pony on the ocean right now.  Surrounded by water with nothing to drink."  It was at that moment his stomach grumbled loudly, and Bashful Thread lowered his head.  "My family knows more than one thing about going hungry.  I wouldn't wish it on anypony."

He brought the cup again to his snout and inhaled the aroma, placing  the cup gently back on it's saucer.  "I trust things work themselves out, however unlikely.  It's all about opportunity, and being ready when it comes.  I think it's good to keep things optimistic.  It also helps that I live frugally, so it's not like I throw bits around.  So how do you managed to get by this well without employment?  Do you at least have enough to pay for pancakes?"

"Oh, don't even get me started on optimism," Gold dust protested with a roll of his eyes without letting his smile fade.

It wasn't often Gold Dust allowed himself to spend money on a promise, but there was definitely a mystery behind this pony. It wasn't malicious; he could tell just on his honesty alone. Every new sentence seemed to lead to more answers. Gold Dust knew this tack tick from one of Silver Tounges rants: he knew I have been in enough social situations to spot a lie, so instead, he is opting for a classic 'don't ask, don't tell', as silver liked to call it, while still seeming interesting to talk to. The question was how he could be so desperate for social activity as to risk revealing such a secret, whatever it may be.

"Actually, now that you mention it, it is lunch time, and what better opportunity to prove my financial independence then by buying you some lunch as well?"

"Oh!  Um, no thanks.  I've already eaten."  As tough his stomach defied him, it growled again.  ".."

It was after a long moment of silence, the waiter came back and placed the pancakes down to Gold Dust and smiled warmly.  "Is there anything else I can do for you two?"

"Oh, um, no I'm fine, thank you!" Bashful murmured quickly.  "I think it's best I get going, enjoy your pancakes!"  He tried to scamper off (Feel free to stop him if you wish), suddenly this being the worst place he could be.

Gold Dust responded by getting up from his chair thankfully already between Bashful and the exit to the cafe, trying not to make it look like a scene. "Alright, this secret of yours is getting way too obvious. Tell you what. if you can look me in the eyes, and tell me that I wouldn't understand, I'll drop it right here and now. If you can't, I'll be fair and let you tell me somewhere secluded, and even tell you about how I can afford to travel so much while living unemployed, if you want." Gold Dust knew this was out of his hooves, the rest was up to Bashful. 'The poor thing's barely standing up to my scrutiny. Bashful Thread looked over Gold Dust, as he noticed more of the patrons starting to look at the fuss between these two.  The nervousness in Bashful's eyes was clear for anyone to see.  His mind was going a mile a minute, trying to come up with something, a way to get this pony to stop prying.

"Um... I- I'm... I'm sick ok?  Cant eat anything, I'll just make a mess when it... um... comes back up again!"

"C-can I go now?" Bashful's voice suddenly became very quiet.  The scrutiny of Gold Dust's eyes worried him grately, and even if he was to get involved in learning how this pony managed to get past paying for everything, the price would be too great.  Mother would be furious, and her ire was more than he could handle.

Bashful looked around, trying to find a way out.  "I am sorry if I offended you, but I don't want to..."  He placed a hoof over his mouth, stopping before he said something worse.

He contemplated of running off to the washroom and 'freshen up'.  Maybe he could hide for a bit.  Why couldn't he be good at this like his brothers and sisters?!

'Good enough' Gold Dust conceded by sitting back down and biting into his pancakes. Their was no contempt in his eyes. No, if anything, there was a hint of fear mixed with dred: fear of just how big of a secret this could be if it was worth going so far to guard and a dred that this secret could be enough to cause him a future regret. However, Gold Dust did not try to stop Bashful, for he beleaved that if he had, then Bashful's decision would not be his own. And to deny him this would never sit well with him looking back.

Always one to save a burning bridge, Gold Dust responded in as naturel a way as he could muster, "Hope you feel better soon."

Hanging his head he left defeated.  Bashful didn't know why, but it felt like he was missing something of an opportunity.  Head low, his eyes tracked back up to Gold Dust, who's look did anything but leave him feeling that this was right.  The problems with living the way he does, subtlety was a gift most of his brothers and sisters had, but Bashful just kept stumbling over things, and it always got him in more trouble than he could handle.

"Look... Come by Orange Lace's Budget Boutique a little later.  M...Maybe we can talk later, when I'm... Feeling better."  The words were choking.  Why are you inviting him?!  This is stupid!  You're going to get everyone in trouble!  Bashful tried to silence the doubt rattling in his mind, but the card was played.

Slowly walking by, he couldn't help but look back at Gold Dust, seeing him as a far more capable 'pony' than he ever was.  Seems that is how it always was.  "Thank you."

The waiter came by with the check for Gold Dust.  "Hmmm, he scampered off again.  Ya know, I keep telling him he's has got to get over being so nervous around people and relax."

------------------

At Orange Lace's Budget Boutique, Bashful stepped through the door and closed it behind him.  Looking about at all the shelves filled with fabric of various colours, the old wood floors worn bear by the previous occupants, and that slight smell of vanilla among Orange Lace's perfumes, he knew he was home.  He looked over the project she had been working on, and smiled weakly.

"Well, I tried making a friend again... It didn't go well." Speaking to himself among the empty room. Grabbing hold of some scraps of fabric, and a needle from his faded red beret, he started to practice his stitching.  The work was always there, and if he was to convince everyone his cutie mark was real, he had to show some love for the practice.  It was never sewing that made him happy though.  It was the learning.

"Maybe I should ask him how he gets by... Might learn something."

His stomach grumbled again at the defiance of him not feeding when he had the chance...

Saddle bag full of maps and the like with his bits and other cresent was still waking up from his usual and now turned around sleep pattern. He found his way towards sugar cube corner seeing other pony's move in and out of there with the ever going party that there always seemed to be going on.

He smiled "i do need a good shake" he thought out loud. opening the door he stepped in wondering who he'd run into.

'Those pancakes aren't half bad... but, they did make me wait quite some time, and would have made me wait more if it weren't for Bashful. Well, one thing's for sure: I'm not leaving a tip. In fact...' Gold Dust's thoughts trailed off as he removed his Yellow Saphire ring and touched his plate with his, now bare, hoof.

'Most of these ponies probably aren't all that rich given the infrastructure this should give an ample distraction for a dine and dash' As Gold Dust settled on a plan, the plate began metallicly shining a bright, vibrant yellow.

"Hay, somepony left their solid gold plate behind!" As a crowd formed around his table Gold Dust nonchalantly made his way to the restaurant's exit knowing that most ponies would be too distracted by the dilemma of the golden plate to notice an unpaid-for meal. The best part, however, was that somepony would probably take it before the restaurant and their poor service could claim it.

Falchner stared at the crowd that had formed "Yeah, because everyone just forgets a object made of solid gold. These ponies are really gulible" Falchner finished eating and grabbed his stuff, headong to the exit. As he saw a pony just ignoring the plate he asked "Hey, aren't you going to try to snatch the solid gold plate?"

'Just don't think about the gold. Don't think about it!-' Gold Dust's mental mantra was interrupted by a particularly curious individual. 'of course, the most astute one can't leave well enough alone,' Gold Dust thought as he tried to make an excuse,- and then the pony, that Gold didn't get a good enough look at, answered for him. "We, that solved itself,"  Gold Dust muttered as he slipped through the door.
