Making one of my characters an alicorn

Basically I want to know what are my best options with trying to get away with making one of my characters an alicorn and get the least amount of hate as possible. Don't tell that I can't, it's been done before. And yes I am aware that I am NOT immune to criticism and hate (which are two VERY different things.)

I don't see why people ask the community these sorts of questions.  It's your character; you shouldn't have to bend over backwards to satisfy the people who mistakenly believe that they have any say whatsoever in what you do or don't do with your character.  If you get any hate or, hell, criticism for making your character an alicorn...  That's their problem, not yours.  I had my cockatrice character ascend to the state of alicornatrice (that's essentially a giant chicken with a long horn protruding from its head) during a game of Checkers against a squirrel.  I don't care, and neither should you.

Do what you want.  Anyone who takes issue with it can go soak their head.

Very carefully. You are right, it has been done before, and if you do it right, you can also do it. I know nothing about your character, so I guess the only thing I can say is that you need to make it seem like they would belong in the MLP universe. The problem I have with most OC alicorns is that they are way overpowered or they are "the chosen one" or some nonsense like that. Basically, if you can't imagine it happening in the show, then don't do it. I know that is kind of vague, but it's the best advice I can give.

Also, I totally agree with @, It is your character and you can do whatever you want with it. That's another reason my advice is vague. I can't tell you exactly how to make YOUR character.

the thought of a snake chicken with a horn in it's head is actually hilarious.

Not to mention: He can travel through space and time (and between universes), snore small planets to death, and communicate telepathically.  And he's pretty darn good at Checkers.

I guess just make it justified. Ask yourself this question: what do you get out of your character being an alicorn that you can't get by making them one of the other pony types? If it's just to be special and live out a power fantasy vicariously, then that's fine if you feel you need to do it, (whatever raises the sun and moon for ya), but you're going to have to accept that you won't impress many people. If there's a reasonable explanation for why your character has earned the status, not "they just happen to be an alicorn", then great. Have at it. If you have the skill to create a relate-able character, then whether it's an alicorn or not will become secondary to most reasonable people. And for the others who will look no further than the alicorn part, no matter how well you write the character, you'll just have to steel yourself against their venom.

It's your oc, you can make it anyway you want. Most people, incluing me, have problems when Alicorn oc's try to fit themelves into the canon of the show (Making them some how related to the royals (Tia, Luna, Twi, Cadie)

I'll give an example of my oc right here:
post-33396-0-47405200-1461042728_thumb.png

His name is Vladicarus, grew up in canterlot. was a light thief, only chance he'd ever meet a princess was if he was in a crowd and saw Celestia
Only chance of him knowing Twilight is if he bumped into her/shining when they where kids.

his job makes him a treasure hunter, so he's barely in equestria, an when he is,, it's selling things. Mother is a flower shop owner in canterlot, So she may know a few people from there.

But Vlad, only comes into..canon, if my friend ever wants to do an oc x canon roleplay, y'know?

So make an alicorn oc, but make sure it doesn't go into canon, unless you rp with him in the canon characters.
