gaming Resident Evil 6 HD is... Well... It's Resident Evil 6 HD...

So my wife decided to trade in our PS3 version of the game to pick up the PS4 version of the game. Now I've watched some footage of the Xbox One version as well and it runs close to the same (with MINOR frame drops at certain parts of the game, but ultimately about the same). So Capcom's theory as to why RE6 did so poorly was "it came out at a bad time" and that "last gen consoles could not run the game so well". Is that really true though, or is Capcom just saving face to ignore the fact that fans hated so much more about RE6.

Well I've been playing the game and I'll go over some of the highlights first, because there are actually a few.

  • Capcom's claim of last gen systems not being appropriate for the game is actually partially true. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game could not even hold a solid 30FPS and most of the game was played in around 27-28, and sometimes dipped to even 21, making for choppy and jarring play. It definitely made aiming and shooting a chore, the new version of the game is running a solid 60FPS on the PS4 (with minor dips, but never below 50 on the Xbox One) and I have to say this helps a ton. Combat is smooth and much more enjoyable when you're not fighting the framerate. This came as a surprised as Resident Evil 1 and 0 did not get the 60FPS treatment. I suppose Capcom was worried that the systems couldn't handle it at the time but later found it  was more possible.
  • The second part of the problem with the last gen ports was 720 and low graphic capabilities. That lower resolution made it significantly harder to aim, and made using the laser sight near impossible. 1080 with a cleaner picture does wonders for aiming and makes popping zombies doable. So that is definitely a huge improvement.
  • All the DLC is included, which we really do like, so if you have a copy of the old game you can trade it in for a few bucks and get all the DLC for about $15 by buying this new version.
  • Capcom was smart enough to reasonably price this game and set it at $20, so it's a fair price for a remaster port.
  • All the cutscenes were redone in 60FPS. This is a big deal, because even with the Resident Evil 0 port, Capcom kept the same crap quality pre-rendered cutscenes from the Gamecube version of the game with a minor touch up. It created a huge disconnect for me when trying to immerse myself, a similar thing happened with the Xbox 360 and PS3 port of RE4 where Ada's cutscenes were just low res 480p PS2 cutscenes. It really felt like Capcom didn't put their full effort into that port, this one however feels like some effort went into it.
  • Gameplay wise, it still has some fun factor to this day, shy of all its flaws.

However it's not all fine and dandy, as there is far more to say about the game. Negatively...

  • Fancy new graphics and 60FPS can not fix a terrible story and RE6 is definitely that. The story is broken up into 4 campaigns which don't really feel like they go together and don't feel like much effort was put into any of them. RE6's story is laughable at best.
  • While the new 1080p60FPS looks nice... It doesn't fix broken physics that are just not fun. Enemies are bullet sponges, aiming seems wonky for some reason and you'll find yourself getting hurt from tons of cheap tricks such as an enemy popping out of nowhere to grab you when you had no chance to retaliate. There is a certain level of "unfair" you need to accept to play RE6.
  • Remembering to set the game to offline mode so you have the ability to pause is still a thing. Even if you have the game set to not let anyone join and no one is in your game, you STILL can't pause unless you remembered to set the game to offline mode.
  • A lot of online modes are virtually empty. No one really seems that interested in playing Agent Hunk mode on this new port.
  • Chris's campaign doesn't even feel like Resident Evil at all. Start the game with a fully automatic machine gun and a .50 cal sniper for your partner?

Ultimately, if you have never played RE6 and just want to experience the story to say you played all the Resident Evils, this is a good buy, and if you're looking for a little fun for under $20 it's definitely worth it then... However otherwise I would stay away from this game. It's not really that the port is bad, it's the source material.

Who else has bought this game and tried it?

The problem with Resident Evil 6 imo, as well as RE 5 is that they're trying to recapture the success of RE4 but misses the mark on why that game worked in the first place. It's arguably the reason why fans see RE4 as the decline of the series while not pinning the fault on RE4 itself

I played through everyone's story in the PS3 version of the game, and I was disappointed by most of the content.  Admittedly, I was glad to see Leon return and did enjoy his story line more than any of the others.  Twenty bucks might (only might) be worth it to re-experience Leon's story with an improved frame rate and better controller, but RE6 HD still ain't at the top of my wishlist.

I heard that RE5 is also getting an HD makeover (or did, Idunno), and I'm not sure I ever want to touch that thing again.  "Sheva!  Sheva?  SHEVA!  The fuck are yo- oh.  You're dying.  You got stuck on a corner and you're dying."  Obviously that's nothing against Sheva, specifically; play as her and Chris will do the SAME DAMN THING.  And he's a giant, steroid-using, boulder-punching freak in that game.

I will say that Chris's campaign is pretty terrible from what I have played, BUT, I do think that this game at this state is easily worth $20. You get the 4 campaigns, a bunch of mercenary mode content and other stuff, all with co-op, for $20. I find that to be worth it and I have enjoyed what I have played so far. I am looking forward to RE5 and 4 more, but as a third person action game, it is decent. Of course it is not a good Resident Evil game but again, it is $20.

Resident Evil 4 and 5 are also getting re-released this year, with 5 coming first in the next couple of months and 4 coming out in October I think.

RE 6's mainflaw is that it had no reason to exist at all.

with RE5 and the valiant efforts of Chris "Punching Boulders" Redfield, Albert Wesker, that one guy that triggered the whole mess that resulted in the smoldering crater formally Raccoon City finally bites the bullet. All the key players are dead. Berkin. Spencer and Wesker. With that, the game's overall story should be done with? right?

Nope. suddenly Wesker magically has a son (who is never mentioned by anyone ever), Leon can do Gun-Kata and Ada has an evil clone (because why not?)... oh and the zombie can spawn monsters with chainsaws made of bone now... yeah,...

Resi6 is a s*** stain of a game.

As much as I genuinely enjoyed RE4, I've played it on Gamecube, PS2, Wii, and PS3.  I want to play RE2 again; I haven't played it since I picked up a PS1 controller at a buddy's house.

I have beaten RE4 at least 3-4 times and RE5 at least 4 times, so I see what you mean, but I am actually still excited to play them again with better performance. I love both of those games. ^__^

And you are in luck with the RE2 thing! They are currently remaking it. :)

I quite enjoyed resident evil 6. But it's a shit resident evil game. Like how DmC is a good game, but it isn't a devil may cry game. The only survival horror bit was really the first like chapter of leon. Even then there was lots of ammo. I won't be getting it on Xbox one, because I've played through it once and well it doesn't have much of a replay value for me. Its linear. Even resident evil 4 felt somewhat free roam. It was a lot like dark souls in a sense that it pushes you to where you gotta go, though it is linear at the end of the day.

Also resident evil: steroid edition was a great game at the time. It was a lot more action oriented and it kinda worked. But 6 sorta just failed.

I played through RE4 something like eight times on Wii.  The last run-through, I only died once, and it was a STUPID trap that flattened Leon.  RE5 is one of only two games on PS3 that I platinum'd; the other was Skyrim.  I'm not sure I physically can play RE5 again after that. xD  But I'm glad someone is excited about the games.

Well it's about damn time. x )

Exactly. RE4's success confused Capcom and gave them the wrong impression of WHY 4 was so successful.

Which while I am excited for a remake... I can't help but feel that Capcom just has no ability to make NEW games anymore. They are about to remake virtually every RE game they have and they already have remastered and ported a ton of other games. New experiences please.

RE6 wasn't really worthy of a port in my opinion, the game has so many flaws and punishes you with tons of unfair moments.
