Members who have the username "Google", "Facebook", etc.?

On the online members list, I've seen members with the names "Bing/MSN", "Google", and "Facebook". They're all Blank Flank-ranked, but I'm not sure what's going on. Their names kinda make me suspicious...

Are they actual members here or...?

I'm pretty sure they're just monitoring services. They've been stalking on the forums every once in a while since they started.

I'm not sure if it's quite the same as other forums, but normally it means that someone is browsing the site through that particular search engine, and is not a registered user. Unless they have an actual profile you've clicked on...?

Their names don't have a link at all. :/

They are the actual "sites" they appear to be.

Instead of just calling them "Anonymous", those sites actually have coders that can bother to name their search-bots and what-nots that poke around in the forum from time to time.

And yes, Google is actually a Pony.

Cloud computing technology.....Google's ponysona shold be a Pegasus! :P

In all seriousness, I guess that makes sense, but I don't know how the sites could technincally create a "profile" on here and appear on the online users list...I mean it doesn't make any sense...but I guess they are really trying to reach the "farthest corners of the Internet". If they are attached to certain networks, I don't think there's any accounts like those on this vBulletin forum I go to, which is another large forum network software, so I don't know. :-|

Bots from Google and Facebook that collect info on specific pages of websites, for their own nefarious purposes search engines. They appear everywhere on all sites =3

Yes, then they're coded searchers, as poster below said! :P

My guess is that Google and other sites have bothered to find out how things work on IP.Board side of things and have made their bots to be visible here as non-hyperlinked "personas".

Or then IP.Board has altered their code to look for those search bots and their known features to name those "anon" as something.

Hm.....if that's the case, like I said, I'm surprised to not have seen any accounts like those on my vB forum. That's what I think would be a likely target.

(can't do the slash thingy on my iPad, IP Board needs better iOS Safari support :P)

Well, we've been "invaded" by some of the infamous "SpamBots" before who have actually non-suspicious names, instead of something like "MmbrNo314159265" or something.

EDIT: just to clarify, by "we", I was talking about my other forum, not this one. Hopefully that NEVER happens here.

They're not accounts. Search engine crawlers are guests like any other site visitors that don't have an account. IP.Board, however, is able to recognize some bots by their useragent string and thus display them on the "users online" list as something a little more informative than yet another guest user.

In addition, a little fun fact.

The names are determined by the user agent, if you are a guest you get the name of the service you are from (if it is known, and this is done mainly by a bot.)

if you use a useragent switcher to make it look like you are a google bot crawler thingy, your name appears grey and unclickable.

They are actually aliens from outer space, who choose the names both for the purpose of remaining hidden and turning us against our most powerful communication technology, so that when they invade we'll be cut off from the rest of the world.

I believe it's a search bot, or whatever you call those fancy jim-jams nowdays.
