"Oh, I'm willing to eat anything," Kronos replied, "I'm just not sure exactly what will safely run through my systems without possibly short-circuiting anything inside of me. Also, yeah, you're right, I'm more of a carnivore than an herbivore, but just like you're willing to stomach meat, I'm willing to stomach whatever plants we can scavenge and eat safely."

"Good enough," Foray replied with a chuckle. "I'm beginning to get the rumblies anyway... it's about that time. But I don't suppose you've got anything on you at the moment..."

 

Continuing on through the woods, she stopped suddenly and turned in one direction, as though she heard something. Standing alert for a few moments, she mumbled, "Must've been a cat or something," but continued more slowly and cautiously.

"Actually," Kronos replied, "I still got some of that Mirelurk meat that I harvested this morning. If you want, you can have some of it."

 

Kronos noticed that Foray's attention turned elsewhere. He looked the opposite direction just in case if there was anything else in the woods. WHen he noticed that she was continuing on, he followed along.

"Timely," Foray retorted with a quick smile, before turning back to whatever noise she'd heard.

 

"You hear that?" she asked, a hint of concern in her voice as she halted immediately and turned her head yet again. Taking a moment and listening to what seemed to be perfect silence, she added, "Must be my imagination..."

"You tell me," Kronos replied, "You're the one with an auditory implant and I'm the schizophrenic; so you tell me whether or not you're hearing things."

 

Kronos kept his guard up as scanned the area, searching for even the slightest movement from anything from Radstags to Bloatsprites.

"I might be, I dunno," Foray replied, shrugging. "Like you saw in the fight, you're not the only one with mental issues."

 

Turning her head again and coming to a full stop for a moment, she added, "It kinda sounds like a rumble... like a faraway explosion... if there is any sound, anyway. Could be my implant just malfunctioning..."

Hehe, Kronos thought to himself, now she may be suffering from implant malfunction. Still, we should keep our guard up. Kronos knelt down and placed his claws on the ground, trying to detect possible seismic activity from the explosion that Foray supposedly heard.

 

Hmm, no dice, he thought as he felt no vibrations in the ground, there must be something around here though.

 

"Combat scanner." Kronos said as his eyes turned red, scanning the area more thoroughly.

Foray watched as Kronos scanned the area, though she was the only thing in sight of his sensors. Now frowning with concern, she said, "We'd better just hurry up and get to the cabin. For all I know, it could be a thunderstorm, and I don't want to drown in radioactive rain..."

"Agreed," Kronos replied, "Let's just get to the cabin and try to avoid whatever the hell's approaching. Where is it, though?"

 

Kronos tried scanning around for a structure, but there wasn't one in sight. He then heard another thunderous boom in the distance.

 

If I was able to hear it that time, Kronos thought, then something's hunting for us, an it's approaching us at a faster rate than I anticipated.

 

"We must make haste for shelter!" Kronos exclaimed.

The heck did that come from?

 

Foray hesitated for a moment, glancing around and whipping out her busters, before bolting in the direction they were headed and shouting, "Right, let's go!"

 

The cabin wasn't too far from them, as Foray could see it through the trees, but she doubted Kronos had even average maneuverability in this dense a forest.

Kronos fumbled about behind Foray. The reason he was so clumsy in his steps was because if the thing that Foray heard was what he thinks it was, then he'd better haul his ass quick or else he'll get fucked up. "Foray," he clumsily exclaimed trying to call out for her, "wait for--AHH!!!!" He tripped and fell and quickly rolled over to his back with his shotgun drawn out, scanning vigorously for whatever may pop out of the ground.

Yep, that's a radscorpion alright...

 

There was a loud rumble as the ground beneath Kronos shook, the deadly tunneling creature passing beneath him, but not emerging yet. Foray instinctively ran towards her companion, doing her best to help him up whilst keeping an eye out for the monstrous attacking insect, which seemed to be circling them instead of simply appearing and attacking.

Kronos observed the somewhat visible mound that the creature was making as it circled around him. He then noticed Foray coming up to him and helping him up.

 

"Thanks," he told her as she helped him up, "Let's take this thing down. I wanna rip off this damn thing's hide and make body armor out of it."

Really? Tangling with a radscorpion is a dumb way to die...

 

"Fine, back to back," she ordered, now wielding four of her pistols via telekinesis. "This thing doesn't want to get us right away, it's circling so it can take us off guard..."

 

The ground rumbled even more as the creature headed towards the surface.

"Right," Kronos replied as he positioned himself behind Foray, "Back to back." He cocked his shotgun and honed it down its iron sights, readying himself for the creature to pop out at any time. He felt the seismic activity the creature was causing, causing him to stagger a little bit. He regained his composure and darted his eyes around the area in front of himself.

 

"You seeing anything on your side, Foray?" Kronos asked Foray.

Foray didn't answer, she was too focused on the creature at hand. Its movements were confusing and unpredictable, as it'd shoot towards the surface just to burrow down again.

 

A sickeningly loud rumble shook Foray, and then suddenly, the ground beneath her gave way.

 

With a gasp and a failed attempt at grabbing onto Kronos for support, the unicorn plummeted down fifteen feet and landed on a pile of dirt, face-to-face with an angry glowing radscorpion.

Kronos tried feeling behind himself as he no longer felt his partner behind him.

 

 "Foray?" he asked bewilderingly, "Foray, where'd you--? Oh crap, no."

 

He turned and saw his companion face to face with a giant glowing radscorpion.

 

Just try and not move, Kronos thought, maybe it won't be provoked if we just stay still.

 

Then more thoughts raced through his head, Should I help her? But then, she'll get pissed off if I try and help her. Should I say something? But then the radscorpion might attack her. Shit, what should I do? His heart was palpitating as he stood there, not knowing what to do as he watches his partner be face to face with the giant armored arachnid.

Foray landed roughly on her wounded knee, crumpling to the ground like a rag doll. Looking up, she froze when she finally saw the radscorpion. Although the creature didn't look particularly angry, it wasn't happy that Foray had trespassed into its tunnels.

 

Knowing that shooting it would simply provoke it to tear her apart, and having nowhere to run, Foray stayed low to the ground and backed up slowly.

 

"Kronos!" she hissed, obviously terrified. "Fucking do something!"

Kronos shook his head as soon as he heard her order.

 

She authorized you to act, numbnuts, Kronos thought, do something!!

 

After quickly psyching himself out, he leaped off of the cliff and grabbed the radscorpion's tail as he landed. He then tossed the radscorpion over his head, slamming it to the ground belly up. He drew out his claws and dug them through the radscorpion's softer underside and dragged it through the body.

 

He watched as the radscorpion skittered about on its back trying to get back up until it eventually stopped squirming.

 

Kronos panted as he looked at the radscorpion then back at Foray, then back at the radscorpion.

 

"Foray," he told her as he backed up towards her, "You alright?"

"I'm fine..." the unicorn answered through clenched teeth as she stood up. "Well... most of me..."

 

She kept her wounded foreleg in a raised position, as it was far too painful to carry any of her weight, though it didn't appear to be much worse than before.

 

Taking a moment to catch her breath, she added, "Damn though, that was... pretty cool, honestly..."

"Thanks," Kronos replied, "I'm just glad you're alright. Damn radscorpions."

 

He then looked at the radscorpion and dug his claw back inside of it for good measure. He then proceeded to pull out its hide and it's stinger gland.

 

"Radscorpion hide can actually make good armor," Kronos explained to Foray, "And it's stinger gland has viable poison and nuclear material that can be used for a variety of high-tech weapon scopes." and gave the gland over to Foray, "We still need to clean out the hide and dry it, so, that just means I'm gonna have to carry it on my back for a while." He then went on to strap the hide on his back with the underside facing outwards to dry it out.

 

He then turned his attention to Foray's leg. "Need a shoulder up for that?"

"Nah, should be fine. I have three other legs," Foray retorted, forcing a smile but still visibly in pain.

 

Eyeing the radscorpion gland, a bit confused as to why Kronos was giving it to her, she shrugged and placed it neatly in her saddlebags.

 

"...Feel like helping us find a way out of here?" she asked, looking up at the surface, which was far out of reach.

Kronos looked up in the direction that Foray was looking. He went up to the cliff and felt it.

 

"Hmm," Kronos replied, "I could climb this cliff." he then turned towards Foray and asked her, "You think you can hang on to my back while I climb? If not, I can still carry you on one arm and do a staggered climb up."

Foray stared at him for a moment, then at the cliff. "...Uh... probably not. I feel like I'd slip off at the steep parts, and falling down again wouldn't be helpful to either of us..."

 

Looking at him unsteadily and with her ears folded, she asked, "You're sure that's the only way?"

"Well," Kronos replied, "That's just the quickest way back up. I never said it's the only way back up. I mean, we could try to walk around the perimeter of this geological formation and hopefully find stable and travers able terrain to get back up there, although that may take longer, or it may not work. So, there's always that option, which I guess with your condition is the best option we got."
