Banner idea for creativity

I was just curious if there have been attempts at animated banners. I am sure it is something complex in one way or another, but I thought I'd ask about what people's stance on this is.

 

I am not asking for them personally, I was just curious if this has been attempted if not considered at any point. and if so, what are your opinions on this?

Seems like a simple gif would do the trick. You have to understand, though-making a gif is a LOT harder than making a vectored image, to the point where, if it takes a day to do a vector, don't expect any sleep for a week if you want to turn that into a gif.

Gifs and animations can sometimes cause lag issues, but I don't even know if that's worth mentioning, as I don't know if that would cause actual noticeable issues or not. I myself would be curious to see an animated banner, as I've seen little to none of them done before on forums, however, I do like the classic banners, as they provide a lot of variety and uniqueness already, being changed weekly to something new. Certainly an interesting concept, though.

Oh I know it is not a simple task. I was just voicing it to see what others thought, or if the topic has been brought up.

The lag is a good point too. I remember during the winter the site had a animated snowfall on the main page, and it caused lag for some members. I do enjoy the banners we currently use and have used as well, I just thought it may be interesting to discuss haha.

Hmm.... I'm pretty experienced with making gif. So I could help if it was needed, but I don't really like the idea of having an animated banner unless it was something subtle like twinkling stars or blinking eyes.

Yeah, I think subtleness is key here. It's not over the top and also wouldn't be as likely to cause any lag issues.

It depends on the size of the gif. As long as it doesn't have alot of frames and doesn't use the replace function, it could work.

If anyone was wondering, here's a good example of how an animated banner-ish thing could work. It has the simple background, but an overlay of Rainbow Dash floating up and down on a cloud.

That only moves when you hover over it, though. It's not a true "animated" banner.
