Is the. MLP movie the future of the movie industry?

In how it was marketed and released. Currently, the industry is in a decline, thanks to streaming services and possibly audience disinterest and fatigue. The mlp movie is set to make modest profit at relatively low cost. 

Is this the future of movies? A limited release w/ modest advertising targetted at specific audiences for imcremental gain, rather than high budget gambles w/ higher costs for production and advertising, aimed at a broad audience?

I think you're reading a bit too much into one movie. Hasbro kept it small and limited because they knew that this was going to be a niche market. Anime movies have been doing the same thing for years. It just doesn't make sense to get into all those theatres and do all that marketing when you don't have the audience for it. Hasbro just knew they don't have the crowd pull that a big company like Disney has with their animated movies.

Not to mention the pony movie is tied to a toy line which is their main bread bringer

I think MLP movie does  Hype-up many audiences (mainly kids) and there haven't been this kind "hype" for a animated movie not since the movie Frozen came out. Even Moana didn't get the much hype as Frozen did.
