What exactly is Equestria?

Is it a continent or is it something else?

Also, do you think that their world is smaller than human earth?

And when Starswirl referred to the land as "The Realm" was that whst he calls Equestria? Or what exactly is it?

The second and third question have to be answered before the first I think.

If it is a continent it seems it would be very large for one. Because you would think that the Griffin land and the dragon land would be different continents right?

I’d think this sums it up in a nice package with a bow.

I do actually think that Equestria is an empire. It is far too big to be a kingdom. Not also the fact that it had multiple ethnic groups/races  i.e. dragons and Griffins. Which both fall into Equestria.

Going by the maps that have been released its sort of North Americaesque. There's Equestria which has all the locations we see in the show e.g. Las Pegasus then South Equestria which is the areas mentioned in the Daring Do adventures like Sonambula then badlads then Kludgetown and Mt Aris. Over the ocean to the west is a largely uknown continent where Griffonstone is located and to the north you have the Crystal Empire and then the frozen North where YakYakistan is located.

So Equestria as used in the show is actually North, West and possibly east/south as well though its hard to say what they're referring too. We do know Zecora came from somewhere we've never seen and thanks to the movie/daring do adventures we know what lies south up to a certain point and its not there.

There's a large (file size) map here though I don't know how accurate it is its fairly close to others I've seen. 20170804_105525.jpgwh
