It is mostly a pop culture running joke and State rivalry. My family is from Philly so Jersey trips were common (we even own houses on the S. Jersey Shore). I will tell you that there are annoyances with Jersey such as some of their solutions to traffic if you from another State. Circles are amusing for the unaware.
Creamy Arty 6,252 August 29, 2018 Share August 29, 2018 Befitting the "Garden State," when I was driving down the New Jersey Turnpike for BronyCon 2012 I noticed a very strong soil smell, although there was nothing around me but concrete Anyway, what Jeric said. Not the most inhospitable place I've been but not exactly warm either, except for Voorhees and Downingtown. People were pretty nice in those cities. Kyoshi made this ^^ Come join us on Equestria.tv on Fridays at 6 PM Eastern for our weekly movie nights!

cuteycindyhoney 13,307 August 30, 2018 Share August 30, 2018 (edited) As a native born and life long Jersey girl, I see NOTHING wrong with the Garden State! @Jeric Traffic circles are weird though. I admit that. Edited August 30, 2018 by cuteycindyhoney 1 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!!
Here No Longer 5,276 August 31, 2018 Share August 31, 2018 I don't know. I've never been there. I think it has something to do with the ongoing rivalry between New Yorkers and New Jersey people. Though, from what I hear, it wouldn't be my cup of tea. I don't know, it just seems too... urban for me. It's surrounded by big cities, and has plenty of big cities of it's own, and its a rather small state. I'd rather go back to my native Washington (the state, not the city) myself, but that's just me.
