Irresponsible adult figures

Can we talk about how authority figures, namely Twilight, is willing to have not so responsible kids go on a scavenger hunt for extremely powerful artifacts without adult supervision? One of those artifacts was said to control the tides and summon tsunamis ("The End in Friend")! It kind of paints Discord's actions endangering the students with bugbears and dragon sneeze trees ("A Matter of Principals") as not so bad, by comparison to endangering them with unsupervised access to artifacts that could flood cities, or worse.  Who knows what the other 5 artifacts are capable of!

If Discord wanted to actually harm the students, he would have. His intentions were to mess with Starlight. He was scaring the students, but caused them no harm. As for the artifacts, Twilight would have known/sensed if any of the students had the magical potential to USE the artifacts. For non-magical users, they would be inert  historical relics.

Well she expected Glimmer to run the school while she was gone, and (like any school) expects the students to respect these artifacts with respect.

His intentions was to help out. Glimmer was not happy with what he was doing on purpose; Discord felt bad and brought chaos in the school as a consequence because she was leaving him out.

Changelings, Hippogriffs, Ponies, and Dragons are all magical creatures. That's the majority of the student 6. And the rest of the school is ponies. ..magical creatures who could easily misuse (whether intentionally or accidentally) these powerful artifacts.

- The artifacts were still in the school grounds and Starlight was in Twilight's eagle nest to keep an eye on them.

- The students were supposed to get their bracelets near the artifacts to register finding them and never touching them.

I agree that using old magical relics in a game is risky and not very respectful, but I also think security measures were taken when executing the hunt.

No, they were finding the magical artifacts with adult supervision, as shown by Starlight keeping an eye on them with a telescope. Twilight and Starlight knew that none of the students would or could misuse them, they only talked about the historical context of them and possibly don't even have the magical prowess to use them for evil. In The End in Friend, Twilight trusted Spike with the Amulet of Aurora, someone she very likely doubts even has the ability to do anything harmful with it. Discord could easily whip up a disaster far worse than the students could ever hope to make, and Starlight didn't have a problem with him being around the school until he started causing trouble. You know the way these characters are, being regular witnesses to magical mayhem, they always solve these problems as they come.

you don't need to specialize in magic to have things go wrong with ancient artifacts. Case in point- Magic Duel and Inspiration Manifestation. Even Power Ponies, with Spike's comic. Could be just an incantation.

In The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Fluttershy is almost knocked to her death in an unsupervised race & no one even punishes Dash.

Nor is Dash ever punished for trashing the Weather Factory in Tanks For the Memories

So, it isn't new & it isn't just Twilight
