Guest April 10, 2019 Share April 10, 2019 (edited) So, this game has been out for a while and I have not seen a topic about it yet. Another Battle Royale has joined the fray, by Respawn Entertainment. The creators of Titanfall after their acquisition from EA have pumped out Apex Legends. Against all odds though... The game was a massive success, gaining over 25 million players almost overnight. It's definitely an interesting story to see such a huge comeback after what everyone thought would be doom and gloom. Apex Legends I have to say after played it is... A breath of fresh air in the Battle Royale genre. While it doesn't do a lot of "new", it focuses more on ironing out the details to get a game that feels polished. I found a certain level of being able to just "jump in" without much experience and I was getting kills and reviving teammates with ease. Apex seems to offer a level of gameplay that allows players a chance to "come back" from the brink of defeat if they play correctly, and focuses heavily on encouraging you to seek out and kill other players. It's a pretty exhilarating experience I have to admit. With a team of three, you and two friends can really push the boundaries of teamwork to fight for survival in a pretty nice sized map. Honestly, I'm shocked at how well this game plays. I had NO hope for this game when I saw it at first and after trying it's demo forever ago... I didn't give it a second look, but now... I'm kind of diging it. What are your thoughts on Apex Legends? DISCLAIMER: Please, this topic is intended for discussion of the game Apex Legends, not the genre as a whole. I am asking to please contribute to the discussion. Comments such as "I don't like the genre" or "I have never played it" are not productive and give us nothing to talk about. Criticisms are fine so long as they are about the game so we can discuss them! I implore people to PLAY a game before forming an opinion of it, or at the very least watch footage of it. Kyoshi Frost Wolf 42,202 April 10, 2019 Share April 10, 2019 Gave this game a fair chance after it released and it to me is just another battle royale game. It isn't anything special and feels like Titanfall if it were hideously watered down. Sure, it has a lot of interesting ideas for this genre, but it is a genre I despise. Plus, at this point, it comes at the cost of Titanfall 3 which Respawn has said it is currently not developing. We could have had both, but they instead just hop on a bandwagon. It bothers me because it feels like people are giving this impression that battle royale is all most people want anymore. Not to mention, I just cannot stand seeing just how shamelessly similar these games are. I simply rolled my eyes when I started Apex and seen myself jumping out of a flying vehicle to fall to the ground and looting stuff while avoiding a death circle. At this point it feels contrived and all the same. I felt the same way when Firestorm was put into BFV. "Escape a ring of fire." Gee, that hasn't been done 100 times already. 1 Redeem me into childhood. Show me myself without a shell.
Early Sunsets 2,111 April 10, 2019 Share April 10, 2019 I hate battle royale games (just ffa games in general, really), so to me it's just another game I'll never touch. I don't care that it exists or people play it, I just don't want anything to do with the genre. If people want to play it, cool. You do you. However, I agree with Kyoshi that by coming at the expense of Titanfall 3, it should have been released as a side project in addition to Titanfall 3, or better yet, left as an idea in the back of some dev's mind only to be forgotten days later. Because of that sole reason, I despise Apex. 1 Rainbow Dash Fanatic "You stroll down memories of younger, brighter times 'cause you never realize what you've got till you leave it all behind." ~ dBPony "So we’re here at the end, did we teach you well, my friend? EA likely saw the first two games did "okay" at best (even though that was partially their own fault), and decided Apex was a more "fresh" idea to try. I encourage people to give it a try before judging it though.
Early Sunsets 2,111 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 Not to be rude, but I'd rather give up gaming entirely than even download Apex, or any battle royale game for that matter. I don't have to play it to know it's just the same as the others. 1 Rainbow Dash Fanatic "You stroll down memories of younger, brighter times 'cause you never realize what you've got till you leave it all behind." ~ dBPony "So we’re here at the end, did we teach you well, my friend? MangoFoalix 25,058 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 Personally just not interested in another Battle Royale game. Wasn't interested in PUBG and Fortnite, not really interested in Apex.
Here No Longer 5,286 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 It's a battle royale game. I will give it no chance. I'm positive based on that fact alone it is a downright terrible game.

Kyoshi Frost Wolf 42,202 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 In fairness, Battle Royale games are extremely similar to each, to a point of comedy. So when a new one comes out and if we have already played one or two and we didn't like those, I doubt there's a chance we will like this one. It is again like Firestorm. I already knew I wouldn't like it so I am not going to bother with it at all. If we still got Titanfall 3 out of this I wouldn't be as irritated by it all. I am just so sick of the constant trend hopping these companies are doing. Redeem me into childhood. Show me myself without a shell.

Here No Longer 5,286 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 I'm not hating on them because it's cool I'm hating them because the games are badly designed from a mechanical perspective. There's several problems that I'd like to note 100 people in one online match. This creates several smaller problems that stack up to make me have no care whatsoever for the genre. Lag. That should be an obvious one. It actually makes the game less about skill and more about being lucky you don't find yourself parachuting into a deathtrap. It makes losing less of a learning experience and more of a "ok why do I care about winning this waste of my time anyways" type of scenario, and from what I can tell it's not nearly rewarding enough winning to compensate for that feeling. The balancing in these games... It's a travesty. Don't even get me started on that. Sure there are always preferred options in multiplayer games, but they literally make them unbalanced seemingly on purpose for the sake of punishing those that aren't lucky enough to find good weapon spawns. Which brings me to the third point. Spawning. Seriously, it's almost totally RNG. The tiny amount of skill truly involved in getting a good landing spot is astounding. It totally puts out a middle finger to literal strategy and makes me wonder how these games even have any sort of competitive scene aside from being irrationally popular. The whole death zone thing. It's downright insipid of them to design a game that way. It's almost like they're discouraging you from actually strategically going around the map, and penalizing you for almost literally nothing but existing. That's what it seems like at least.

All of these are subjective. 1. I never experienced any lag. It's dependent on your connection. Mileage varies between players. 2. Ehhhh, this depends on what you constitute as "skill". Picking strategic cover locations for spawn and paying attention to where other players are dropping plays a big role. 3. How so? 2 hours ago, Dusky, the Boy Queen said: The whole death zone thing. The idea is to keep matches from getting down to a handful of people on a map so huge that they will never find each other and to prevent camping for too long. The idea is to speed matches up and force players into fighting. Waiting around for everyone else to kill each other becomes less of a viable strategy the longer the match goes on. You are pushed into tighter and tighter territories. 2 hours ago, Dusky, the Boy Queen said: I know the genre's tropes fairly well, considering I have watched people play Realm Royale, Fortnite, and PUBG on several occasions. It's really not hard to see how they play, it's actually relatively simplistic. There was a time I even had a legitimate interest in them (until I realized their SLEW of problems). That is really just oversimplifying them, but okay.
Esoteric 142 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 I've been playing it a lot recently, even got to play with @Key Sharkz today which was really fun. ^^ Honestly, it is a really good game despite being a battle royale. Everything feels very planned out and I enjoy a lot.

In my opinion it applies to the entire genre and I don't think anyone's gotten it right. But PUBG is definitely the worst about it. 1. Lag isn't a subjective problem. It's kind of hard to play a game when you're lagging like crazy because there are 100 people on one freaking server. Also, congratulations your internet can make it work, 2. I don't agree, but I can somewhat see your point here. 3. If there are 100 people in a free for all game, it feels like there isn't really much of a point to try to win since statistically that has literally a 1% chance of happening, and winning doesn't seem to feel very rewarding. Most of the winners half of the time get extremely lucky about not randomly running into a crowded area and getting shot down.

Rising Dusk 28,889 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 Apex Legends has become my go to multi-player game when I play with my buds from the states on the weekends. We were really into Pubg, over 500 hours, but couldn't get into Fortnite because none of us enjoyed the building mechanics or gun play. So this game coming out of nowhere was awesome. It's fast, high mobility on both the horizontal and vertical, gun play is top notch and it has a lot fun character to it. The map is wonderful and varied too. Super useful ping system to help with not having to talk. The high energy of each match really helps keep me engaged and ready for after a win or loss. Favoring an aggressive play style rather than hiding in buildings or bush for 30 minutes. Has some way to go with new weapons, legends and hit box balancing, but I'm looking forward to future content. Oh, and add duos.

Celli 4,349 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 I don't see the point of going to a thread dedicated to something specific and saying "I don't care for X" It makes you come off as just being someone going "Look how cool I am for not caring about what's being talked about!" Well, aren't you special? It's just like going in a bookstore and saying "I don't care for reading". Like wow, good for you. As for Apex, it looks cool but I have no interest in it but I'm not going to judge it without having played it.

Why bother making a new game when you have a constant battle royale money printer? If people didn't flock to these games en masse all the time, then maybe the chances of TF3 happening would be a bit better, but at this point clearly the majority of people do not care about TF3, they just want battle royale. The rest of us can get bent as far as the companies care. Redeem me into childhood. Show me myself without a shell.
Cash In 23,108 April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 I've never played Apex Legends, though I've heard a fair amount about it, on account for seeing videos and knowing people who play it. I may give it a go in the future, if time allows for it. I already have enough games to play at the moment. At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do. Guest April 11, 2019 Share April 11, 2019 I think what I’m really enjoying about Apex is it’s more simplified in many aspects so picking it up and playing is easy. I think it’s pretty clear that Respawn wanted to make a good game here.
