The last 2D animated film by Disney at least was Winnie the Pooh (2011). I expect there'll be some made by smaller productions either as a cash grab or callback to the older style, but I don't see that happening. Perhaps some will be made if future "live action" adaptations aren't as successful as anticipated, but 3d animation is what dominates the industry now for better or for worse, so they can always resort to just continuing that.

The 2D stuff will always hold up at least and be loved by future generations, but I don't think we'll see more anytime soon. Which is a real bummer since Sinbad and Treasure Planet were kind of favorites of mine as far as more recent stuff goes, and they combine elements of both.

There may be a few sporadic appearances of 2D, but it'll be the exception to the rule. Most studios want to mimic the latest hit and that means CG. But there are always some filmmakers who like to keep the old ways alive and I'm sure they'll give us glimpses, if only fleeting ones, of the greater art form.

In the U.S? Doubt it. The public sees 2D as childish and inferior. Something for children on TV. Not cinema. CGI is for families seeing grandiose spectacle on the silver screen.

But abroad, namely Japan, the tradition lives on. Your Name, the Boy and the Beast, any Ghibli film. It may be a niche thing in the west, but at least it shows the art isn't dead.
