He is

A older pony he's been around the block a bit.

He does his best to help other ponies, as making others happy is a primary component of his own happiness, due to his own depression/loneliness.

A gentle pony, who will never hurt a hair on your back, even if you hurt him.

 

He loves:

Pats on the back

Education (he often studies with Twilight Sparkle)

Hanging out with other ponies

Camping especially with others
