Spring had fully sprung, the air was warming, the water was flowing, and for Eironn, his new horns had finally grown in. This was his second year with horns, and he was pleased to see that they were bigger this year, but he hadn't yet used them for magic. He wanted his first spell of the year to be special, something like last year with his true first spell. For bucks, the first spell was something like getting a cutie mark was for ponies; It symbolized their talents and path in life. Eironn's first spell had shown great promise and talent in becoming a weaver, and he had practiced it all last year and even doing some manual weaving over the winter when his horns fell off. He had a pair of woven baskets that he had made at his sides which he planned to use to collect reeds in so that he would have material for his first spell of the year.

As such, he was heading to the pond on the edge of the Whitetail woods, north of the pony glen they called Ponyville. He decided to take a longer route to the lake, walking along the edge of the forest bordering on Ponyville, as he had always been curious about the ponies living there, though he had never met one himself. He, like most deer, was fairly cautious and quick to flee. On past instances where he had been spotted by the ponies he had bounded off into the forest before they could approach or speak to him. He wished he was more courageous.

On this trip though, he saw something that made him pause, he saw a creature totally unlike the ponies he had seen before. It walked like a diamond dog, mostly, but was far lankier and skinnier than the dogs he had seen before. He stopped, curious at the sight, and waited to see what this new creature would do.

(Eironn is seeing your character likely from across a clearing, about 30-50 yards away. He's inside the forest with a bit of foliage to hide him. The Whitetail woods are not nearly as dark or crowded as the Everfree Forest.)

Lnx1y, a slim overlander with pale lavender skin with shoulder length purpler hair and 2 purplish pink horns on her head is also in the forest. She’s about 40 yards away from Eironn. Lnx1y is touching the flowers in the forest. She’s not used to the flowers in Equestria like she is with the tropical flowers back in the Overland. She is very interested in the flowers, so interested that she didn’t noticed the young buck approaching her.

Eironn was momentarily relieved that this new creature had not yet spotted him, he appeared to have been lucky enough to approach it from behind as it was... observing the flowers? It at least seemed to be acting like a pony would, at least like that one yellow pony-doe (his term for mare) with the pink hair often did. Was this creature related somehow? Another one of the animals that the other one cared for? It did look like a very large gecko, not having fur and all.

He was cautious about the horns though, it could be aggressive, or have magic.

Caution and curiosity warred in his mind, ultimately he decided to get a little bit closer, try to see it better, maybe be able to tell if it were harmless, or something he should warn the others about.

If she turned to look in his direction at any time, or looked like she might start moving, he would stop and wait before continuing.

If she didn't look, he would travel about half the distance between them before he would accidentally break a fallen branch. He would then freeze, waiting to see if she had heard him.

Eironn jumped back a length at being spotted, which he realized gave his position away if she hadn't already spotted him. "rot" he muttered under his breath.

His legs were itching to run, to bound off into the forest and try again a different day, but his curiosity kept his hooves planted and his gaze fixed on the strange creature in front of him.

It didn't look that dangerous, but who knew when horns were involved. Unicorns could do some pretty crazy stuff, or so he had been told, he'd never seen one do more than lift things like he did. And, it had spoken to him rather than attack, so maybe it was friendly like the ponies? Again, in theory, since he'd also never spoken to a pony before, just watched them, and he'd been told about dangerous ponies in the past, trying to drive the deer out of the area so they could chop down all the trees to make pay-per, or whatever that was.

He realized he had been standing still for a good moment there, maybe this creature relied on movement to see? maybe it hadn't seen him at all? He better just stay still just in case.

Eironn would stand in place, his expression, if Lnx1y could read it, was conflicted between curious and scared. His small tail, which more resembled a bunny's than a pony's hardly wiggled as he watched her to see what she would do next.

It took everything Eironn had to not turn and bound off into the forest when the creature got up to approach him.

17 hours ago, Lnx1ynight16 said:

"Hello, there’s nothing to be scared of." said Lnx1y in a reassuring tone.

He wasn't so much reassured by her tone as she might have hoped, as he still seemed quite scared. It did, however, give him enough confidence to try and respond.

"W-wha.... w-wha-what... wha-what a-a-a-are y-ya-you?"

He was visibly trembling in place, legs tense, ready to flee at a moment's notice. It seemed Lnx1y was about as close as he could stand at this time.

Eironn calmed a bit when the creature stopped approaching, seeing her closer she wasn't that much taller than him, if at all considering his antlers, and given how little noise she made as she walked it seemed she was likely a good deal lighter than him.

Still, he was more curious than looking for a fight, tilting his head at her response, "W-what's an o-oh-over l-lander? I-is th-that a, uh, a t-type of d-d-diamond d-dog?"

He wasn't fully calm yet, but this 'overlander' was starting to seem safe enough.

Lnx1y shakes her head and giggles. "Overlanders are not related to diamond dogs at all. They’re both 2 very different species." said Lnx1y. Lnx1y looks pretty confused as to why  Eironn would compare her to a diamond dog. She’d never been compared to another species before.

Eironn calmed a bit more as she responded to his question, though her answer brought more confusion. "Oh, um, sorry. I just haven't seen anything like you before, you don't move like the ponies do, but a bit like the dogs do. I haven't seen them up close, too dangerous, no trees where they live. You just seem more like them than like ponies is all."

He looked around, making sure there weren't others sneaking up on him, "Um, so what is an Overlander then? I've never seen anything like you around here before."

He'd seen plenty of ponies, even those weird bug ponies who lived in the woods, they were friendly enough but kept their distance, but he'd never spoken to one personally, not alone like this at least.

Lnx1y smiles warmly when Eironn asked her what an overlander is. She always likes to explain about her species to others. "Well, overlanders are a species that live in the Overland, a group of islands in the South Celestial Sea." replied Lnx1y.

Eironn tilted his head, he hadn't ever heard of those places before. "That... that doesn't sound nearby. What are you doing here with the ponies?"

He was also curious as to what an Island and a Sea were, having never left the forest nor had anyone in his family left the forest for several generations since his ancestors first came to Equestria on Eternity's Crossing.

Lnx1y looks at Eironn with wonder. "I’ve been living in Ponyville for a couple years now, but why are you alone?" She was confused by the fact that Eironn was alone in the forest.

Eironn was surprised by her question, and that he hadn't seen her before if she'd been here for a few years now. Then again, he hadn't exactly been watching the ponies super closely.

He briefly looked around before answering, "I, um, I'm not alone. This forest is my home, I live here with my family. I was, um, I was going to the lake to gather reeds to make a new basket, like this one." He turned to show her the woven basket he had strapped to his side. "Once I get enough I'll go back to my glen and get taught."

He shook his head, returning his attention to her, "I was surprised to see you here, not many ponies come into the woods, except when they come to shake the leaves down, or in pairs... Were you... waiting for someone?"
