Reformed Changelings and the Philosophy of My Alternate Universe:

Stolen Identity: A Critique of the Changeling Reform
In my universe, the transformation of Changelings into pastel and colorful creatures is entirely absent, as it is perceived as a fundamental betrayal of the species’ identity.

Assimilation with Racist Guises
The idea that Changelings must physically change to be accepted by other species is a form of systemic racism. Imposing a new, “cute” appearance to prove one has become “good” is tantamount to saying that one’s original, natural appearance is inherently bad or threatening. It’s a demand for assimilation: as if a person had to change their skin color to be tolerated by the majority.

Sabotaging the Message of Tolerance
The original series championed the idea of not judging by appearances, but the reform contradicted this message. By transforming the black “bug horses” into colorful butterflies, the message was sent that difference is only acceptable if it becomes aesthetically pleasing to others. Erasing the reformed ones restores the true lesson: goodness and loyalty don’t need pastel colors to exist.

The Power of the Original Design
The original design of the Changelings—black, perforated, and elegant—possesses a dignity and class that the reformed versions have lost. Many fans consider these new forms “weird” or visually flawed, preferring the original “Elite” aesthetic.

A Universe of Resistance
Denying the existence of the reformed ones is an act of resistance against a narrative that punishes difference. It is an affirmation that one can be oneself, retain one’s physical heritage and original color, while still being an integral part of the world. It is a choice that prioritizes authenticity over superficial conformity.
