Crispy 5,563 July 22, 2012 Share July 22, 2012 Posting in here for the "What are you listening to right now" thread. Is it a lack of discussion that has happened to move it to obliquity? Some threads like that do produce discussion, the metal thread especially. At their core, yes, threads like mine are a bit of a video dump, but it's more about the song that's played than the words you can put with it... At least to me. I'm sure some others would agree. I hate to be all "WAT?!" because I like you guys, but this isn't one I quite get. Especially since it stuck around as long as it did. Fox 5,330 July 22, 2012 Share July 22, 2012 I mindlessly posted in that thread not really giving any thoughts what I thought about the song. I know Crispy has taken great pride in the Metal thread, and I'd argue that if the text limit would remain for any users posting in his thread. It would influence people to post what they think about the song they posted. They can't really say anything else if the text limit is enabled, and if it was spam text... then the post can be simply deleted.

They don't in Cloudsdale, regardless of "quality". 1 GET IN THE PIT On 8/23/2012 at 1:54 AM, Djenty said: ON MLP 4UMS ERRYTHIN IS SRS

Well I was reflecting on your recent status too, but I do agree with you! It'd be nice if they could go through all the past posts and count all the posts that shared content in the post in, "What are you listening to" thread, but that would be such a tedious task lol. It just sucks to have a thread that's lasted so long to be essentially banished. It was started only days into the forums inception. There isnt as much discussion between posters in there, so I get it. But if the same were to happen to the metal thread, I'd flip every table in a five mile radius. 1 GET IN THE PIT On 8/23/2012 at 1:54 AM, Djenty said: ON MLP 4UMS ERRYTHIN IS SRS
Killian Jones 2,655 July 22, 2012 Share July 22, 2012 The What Are You Listening To thread is mindless spam, I doubt a great many people batted an eye for other replies in that thread. Most just came to quickly post what they were listening to and left. Which in essence is not much discussion anyway. The Metal discussion thread, and similar threads deserve to stay, because they promote discussion and healthy promotion of source material. So that one will get to change either way. But more often then not people won't discuss anything in the What Are You listening To thread, and if you want quality music discussions, finding a thread that is not essentially a big video dump is actually a nice thing to have. Instead of having to peruse through to find conversation material.

And even those might come into question under the guidelines laid out here, as people don't always discuss in depth their reasons for liking a song. And even those might come into question under the guidelines laid out here, as people don't always discuss in depth their reasons for liking a song. I will support my argument like so. When looking through the specific genre threads, i can see discussion going on, people, quoting and replying, having meaningful things to say about each and everything to post, having conversations. This is encouraged and liked. Because we are on a discussion forum, and that is what it is for. Having people simply post what song they are listening to is not discussion by any stretch of the imagination. It is pointless to do so because people are not very likely to care, I doubt there are many people on the forum who can actually vouch and say they listened to every single song in that thread. I doubt anyone even listened to 10% of the songs posted in that thread. So all that thread is, is glorified post farming. If you truly want people to care, post it to something like a Facebook wall or Twitter and cross your fingers. And this is a problem, for post quality on the forums, it needs to be encouraged to have valuable discussions in places meant for valuable discussion. And Media Discussion has that in it's name, meaning we want it there. And the What Are You listening To is not providing any of that sort. Secondly having separate threads for separate genres or even bands is a good thing in terms of search engine optimization compared to having a mega thread meant to convey all of the music in a single thing. It also provides users an easier way to find the discussions they are looking for, instead of having to look through a single thread for the discussion they want. I will be honest, I brought up the What Are You listening To thread when i became a moderator and was overruled then, however, in light of recent events regarding minimum post length it seems that opinion has tipped in favour of my position. I can see why you would disagree, having accrued a good 300+ posts on a single thread. Means you are heavily invested in it. And now it means you are at a loss of posts because of it.

I can agree with all the points you've brought up, aside from the last one. I'm anything but a post whore, and that's what the last sentence implies. Since I started the thread, I felt an obligation to keep it going. Hence the posts. Either way. Quality is still a debatable term. I know I found some new bands off of it. That makes it worth it in my eyes. 1 GET IN THE PIT On 8/23/2012 at 1:54 AM, Djenty said: ON MLP 4UMS ERRYTHIN IS SRS

It was merely an observation I made, because 300 posts is not an insignificant amount, and I wouldn't put it past anyone to be slightly upset over such a time investment being changed into something which seems very, very different. Because the branding has changed. Additionally while looking through the Minimum post length topic, the move was also done to save the current posting style of the thread. Which is, to be fair, a very, very short one. What is mostly needed is Discussion to be taking place, and for a more hit and run thread, most people aren't visiting for discussion to begin with. The Metal thread etc... don't suffer from this problem as their titles imply that discussion is to be had.

Klopp 2,050 July 22, 2012 Share July 22, 2012 I understand the reason it was moved, but can easily argue that the thread could be changed to suit the needs of Media Discussion without much of a hassle. One example would be to change the title to say something along the lines of "Why you be lovin' that song blastin' in yo' headphones right now!?" Then just add a bit more to the OP saying something like this... Awe yeah, chances are if you're a music lover, you got some awesome background Music goin' on to enhance yo' Forum experience! Go right ahead and show whatchu got goin' on, and while you're at it, tell us why you love that song you be playin'! Go on! Get some discussion goin' down in here! Just cause there are 261 pages of discussionless posts doesn't mean we can't start some up on page 262! Unfortunately I was at work during the discussion the others had, so I couldn't offer this suggestion sooner, but yeah, I would've been against the moving of the thread. All the fun stuff happens when I am at work as well
Zoop 8,384 July 22, 2012 Share July 22, 2012 Considering how long a lot of our forum games have been going on, I don't think the thread is at any risk of sputtering out or dying due to the change of venue, really. I moved it primarily so that the thread could continue on in the same style that it had largely existed in up to that point, given that had been brought up numerous times as a thread that is negatively impacted by the character minimum (and because, as Tich stated, it doesn't tend to encourage much conversation). Honestly, I don't bother myself too much with worrying about whether or not the posts I make are in boards that 'count' - post count is just a number that people give too much stock, and one that I wouldn't mind seeing wiped even further from the site. At any rate, I think @Strife's approach to the situation was the best. The (now CDC'd) 'What are you listening to?' thread remains available for anyone to post a quick Youtube video, but for those that want to take a little extra time and talk a little about what they're listening to, there is now also a dedicated 'Music Discussion' thread - so far it seems to be off to a really nice start.

Most just came to quickly post what they were listening to and left. Which in essence is not much discussion anyway.I disagree vehemently.I've found plenty of songs thanks to that thread, and I'm pretty sure I remember brohoofing some posts as well. I also received brohoofs, I'm definitely certain I did. Why does "thread" have to equal "discussion"? I know the alternate name is "topic", but not all threads need to have a specific topic. Not saying you're wrong, but the quoted statement is an exaggeration. I really like Klopp's suggestion though. And this: All the fun stuff happens when I am at work as well I feel ya bro. :< *hugs* Edited July 29, 2012 by Feather Spiral I take writing commissions.
