[The Pirate Prince 105]

When he'd walked into the room he was so sure what would happen. At the producer's cue, shaking furnishings, and few loud noises; things to provoke reactions in his fearful companions, while he was fearless in his absolute knowledge that it was just pretend. But looking at this mare made his mind freeze.

 

It was subtle, no monster limbs or unpleasant smells or scary noises. There was nothing interesting to film. There was nothing interesting to film!

 

He was convinced he was face to face with a real, 'live' ghost, and he damned himself because all that rose into his consciousness was his usual snarky comments.

 

"Well," He replied, his usual grin frozen on his face, only his eyes betraying his fear, "for a ghost you seem pretty corporeal, so that's a plus, no blood flowing out your eyes, et cetera. Only, with that mask hiding your face, It's kinda hard to call you pretty."

 

He knew he was talking right into a trap, saying exactly what he shouldn't, but what else could he do?

The mare ripped her Surgical mask off of her mouth. Her face was sliced from cheek to cheek. When she opened her mouth to speak, blood poured from her open wound, and her jaw bone was clearly visible. "How about now? Am I still pretty?" She asked in a shrill voice.

"I never said you were in the first place." the unicorn replied. His face still frozen, let slip a single nervous laugh, "heh."

 

His mind suddenly clearing, he threw the camera at the bloody form and ran from the room, screaming "LEG IT, BLUE!"

Star was frozen for a second. He witnessed the so brave spotted unicorn run away like Star himself would probably do. What was going on in that room? Were they suddenly attacked by "something"? "Something" very threatening, for sure.

 

He didn't think twice before he ran as fast as he could in the same direction as Rich, leaving all the other ponies behind and dropping his camera as well.

Quillusion stood there. She started to laugh. "I thought you guys could handle anything." She called to them as she looked into the room. It must have been something really good made by the producers to make them run away. She wanted to know what it was but she didn't really want to walk into that room.

Lapis stared in horror before turning tail and running. Even if it was a trick, it was a pretty good one. Asteria looked very confused and went to take a peak into the room he had run from. Lapis Lazuli quickly ran back and grabbed his assistant before she could see the freaky thing in that room. The two of them ran up the stairs, not thinking about Quillusion. If she was smart, she'd get back up to the ground floor. Once they were back in the main part of the house, Lapis caught his breath. "Uh, why did we run up here? Was there something in that room?" Asteria asked innocently. The blue stallion nodded his head and spoke between gasps. "It was just something unbelievably horrific. Let me rest a moment, and we'll go back down there. I'm sure it was just something set up by the producer."

"What was that?! What was that?!" Shouted Star, now panicking again. "What in the world could it be to make you guys run like that?!" He panted, looking angrily at the two ponies that were once inside the room. He looked around, hoping to see that they were now safe. "Wait a minute... Where's Quillusion?."

The mare suddenly appeared in front of Spotted Rich, stopping him from running. But it was impossible for her to move that fast without making a sound. She pointed to Spotted Rich again, this time she was holding a small kitchen knife. "Do you think I'm pretty?" she asked for the third time.

Quilluison decided to go check the room, and when she went in, she didn't see anything. "What were you guys scared of?" She yelled out of the room, doubting they would here her. There didn't seem to be anything in here slightly scary at all.

"No, isn't it obvious? You've got half your bloody face missing!" Rich shouted at the mare. "It's not my fault! You're a ghost, aren't you? You can bloody teleport but you can't fix yourself up?"

 

He concentrated as well as his panicked mind would allow and fired a spell at the spirit. Rich didn't know in ghosts slept, but sleep spells were his forte and it was all he could think of doing.

The Phantom disappeared into a black mist. There was a faint clanking sound, and as the mist cleared, the only thing left of the ghoul was her knife. Her voice said a single word that only spotted Rich could hear, "Five."

After catching his breath, Lapis spoke up. "I spotted an apparition down there. I assumed it was a trick by the producer, but something seemed of. That was when it removed it's mask. It's to hard to describe..." he sighed. He had promised himself to keep his wits about him. He has come here for real ghosts after all. If what he had seen was the genuine article, then this would have been worth his time in the long run. Asteria stared up at her guardian with disbelief. So, there were ghosts after all. She still didn't want to believe it, but she trusted Lapis Lazuli.

SLAM! The door upstairs had slammed and lock itself shut, leaving the crew stuck downstairs. A faint, red light, resembling a flame, was the only thing that kept the hallway from being pitch black. The source of the light seemed to be coming from down at the end of the hallway, and it appeared to be getting bigger, or moving closer.

Shooting Star violently slammed his hooves on the door. "Let us out!! Let us out!!" He had seen a glance of the monster, and was now more frightened than ever. He could no longer think about anypony or anything around him. He was completely panicked, and just wanted to get out of that house and never come back.

Quillusion was now stuck upstairs, having been near the door when it slammed. "What the buck." She said, trying to turn the door handle but failing. "Guys." She said, slamming her hoof against the door. Now this was starting to freak her out, and she was starting to panic inside.

"Quillusion, calm down. Me and Asteria are still right here." Lapis began to worry. "Shooting Star is still down there. And I don't see Spotted Rich anywhere." He stared at the closed portal before them. "Shooting Star, stay calm. I think you are the only one down there. Try not to get hurt." he called through the door. Asteria was beginning to feel frightened. If this was what ghosts did, she didn't want to be here. She thought it wouldn't be that scary. Life wasn't like books after all. But things were beginning to happen that reminded her of the stories she had read.

The red light disappeared again, leaving the basement completely dark. Near where the light had been, there was a repeated beating noise that sounded like a foal playing with a ball. It was faint, and barely noticeable.

 

The mare with the split mouth was still nowhere to be seen. Her voice sounded in Rich's head again, "Four."

Shooting Star slowly ceased slamming against the door. He needed to stay calm if he wanted to get out of there alive, and luckily he knew it. The entire space around him was completely dark. He couldn't see Rich anywhere, nor the mysterious monster he saw a while ago. "T-t-there... T-there's..." Star took a moment to breathe. "There was a red light at the end of the hallway, but now I can't see it anymore." He warned the rest of his crew that now was separated from him. "...What should I do?..."

Lapis became nervous. "Okay, don't move. Whatever you see, avoid it. Just stay by the door." he said, masking his panic. If he let the fear he felt be heard, then the others wouldn't stay calm. He did say he was going to take charge when they entered this blasted place. Deep in his heart, he hoped this was just the work of the producer. Then he could have a good laugh, take his pay check, and move on to the next adventure. Asteria hung close to him for support. She was beginning to shiver with terror.

He forced himself to calm down. This, thing, whatever it was, seemed to be pacified for now. He picked up the knife and placed it in his saddle bag. He wasn't going to leave it laying around for his supernatural stalker use. "Sorry." he whispered to the darkness.

 

He turned and walked back to the stairs, taking in what had just happened. Had the other ponies ran past him and the ghost? Perhaps the ghost had made it so they were hidden from them. He couldn't help but feel a little bit flattered that the mare had singled him out.

 

Spotted Rich shock his head, trying clear his mind from the post "victory" high, he was still in a creepy house, filled with scared ponies and possibly more hostile spirits, with one of said hostile spirits was currently operating as his personal countdown clock.

 

He cleared his throat, "It's me everyone. Nice of you to run past while I was cornered by the scary mare," he called out from the bottom of the stairs.

"Rich?!" Shooting Star never felt such relief before. "Is that you, buddy?! Oh, thanks Celestia you're alright! Listen... Lapis, Asteria and Quillusion are upstairs, but the door just won't budge." Star shook his hoof randomly in the darkness trying to find Rich's location. "I don't know if you noticed the red light at the end of the hallway though... Lapis said to stay away from it. They're working to get us out of here." Star was carried away by his words and slowly walked away from the door, desperately trying to find Rich in the pitch black darkness.

When Shooting Star was visible in the gloom, he gave him a quick nod and stood next to the door.

"Blue?" He said though the stuck door, "It's me. I'm not sure, but I think that thing is gone, at least for the time being." He explained that he told the ghost off, making it 'disappear in a puff of logic' and how the mare's voice has been speaking in his mind.

"Well, that certainly sounds strange. Okay, Shooting Star, Spotted Rich, I want you to try and ram the door." Lapis called back. "Afterwards, maybe we can get out of here. I think we've seen enough." Asteria stared at the door and tried to open it. It wouldn't budge. "Weird. Ya sure force will open it?" she asked. Lapis gave a sad shake of his head. He didn't want to say it out loud, but he doubted the door would open.

"Alright..." Star took a deep breath. "We'll try." Before tackling the door a single time, Shooting Star stopped. Something Lapis said, about seeing enough already, caught his attention. "Oh wait! The cameras! Where are the cameras?" He noticed Rich didn't had his camera either. He looked around the small visible area they had, but nothing. "We can't leave all of the footage behind. They're our payment! Everything we've been through would be in vain."

 

Star's moment of courage didn't last long though. He wasn't going to lurk in the dark and search for something material like this. "Can't you do something about it, Rich? A light spell, something to help us find our cameras?"

The thumping sound at the end of the hallway stopped unexpectedly. A deep, masculine voice spoke from the darkness. It was faint, and difficult to hear, "You're disobeying me again? I told you to go to bed you little brat!" The voce was followed by a single smacking noise, as if the pony speaking had hit something or someone.

 

A second voice spoke, this time the voice of a foal. It sounded like it was crying. "Please stop," it said "Mom said you can't hit me anymore!"

 

There was another beating sound, this time much louder. "No back talking! Mom isn't here!"
