So basically, this old woman thought it would be good to take it upon herself to restore an old Fresco. Instead of making it good, she made it resemble that of a monkey.

It's not very valuable, though. They are going to try to have it restored, but if that's not possible, they're just going to put up a photo of the painting.

What are you're thought on this, guise?

The masterpiece.

yeah i can draw very well but not paint at all, but i think i could finger paint that and it would still look somewhat like the original,

(did she shave the beard off?)

The painting itself was slowly ruining because of moisture... She didn't do that.

But the grand-daughter of the artist was planning on having it restored, oddly enough.

.. THE RESTORED ONE SCARES ME. It actually looks like a monkey. It looked fine before restoration.. why would she restore it if it was fine?

Well, the middle one was the state it was in before she restored it, I think. It was desperately in need of restoration, anyway, but she should have left it up to professionals. Edited by Djenty's Ghost

You guys will probably think I'm being sarcastic, but I'll say it anyway. I like the "ruined" version better.

I'm being totally serious here. Painting pictures of Jesus has been done to death. I mean, yeah, it's a shame that an existing painting of Jesus was technically destroyed, but well, from an artistic standpoint, the "ruined" version could be said to have more merit. I mean, even though it was unintentional, maybe the fact it resembles an ape could be seen as an artistic statement?

Either way, I think the "restored" version is more interesting to look at than the previous version, in an abstract sort of way. Still sucks the original was destroyed in the process of its creation.

I'll buy the painting for a dollar to show how my friends how restoration works in the world of old women and such.

It's not that the restored isn't... "interesting" to look at

It's that you can't look at it.. while it is next to the original unrestored one.

Sure, it would have been a lovely little piece if she had made it independently. It's not the fact that she ruined a picture of Jesus, it's the fact that she completely ruined a historical piece of great art. It's the equivalent to having a child pastel their version of the Mona Lisa over the original canvas. Honestly, I hate it. Although she had good intentions, she completely destroyed somebody's hard work. Again, if she drew the image apart from the original Fresco, I wouldn't mind at all. Everyone is allowed to have their own style of art without being judged. However, if you're restoring someone else's art, do it in a justifiable way. You can't fling a brush at a wall.

Really, this is outrageous. I hope some miracle worker will be able to fix this.

Why in the name of Christ did that old lady even have access to the actual original canvas? Aren't those usually sealed away somewhere?

It was stupidly stored available to the public in a small church. As you can see, this did not have a good effect. Even without the woman's intervention, it was going to be ruined anyway by moisture and the environment.

I believe this wasn't as famous or valuable as some other Fresco's, so they didn't really take necessary precautions in protecting it.
