My encounter with a troll.

I am a 19 year old college student and a brony, So one day, Since very little is known about bronies, and for the most part due to stereotyping about the fan base, I keep my appreciation of the show apart from a few friends a secret, I decided to post on my facebook that I was a brony, then 40 seconds later a "friend" decided to insult me because i liked a show "made for little girls" I took it to him on chat and we got into a huge fight about bronies, he thought all bronies were "gross" and would "never get laid", I got responded that i didn't care if people didn't think i liked the show, then he responded with the smartass comment, "if you really didn't care what people, thought you would be a mess because you show and you don't tell people you don't shower because you didn't care what people thought" he just made me so mad with his smart ass comments and his stereotyping of the fanbase, i deleated the status to avoid any embrassement. so i feel kind of torn, i love the show and a few of my friends do. and we barely fit any of the negative stereotypes, but i am worried of the reaction i will get from some people who are ignorant of the fan base, what do you guys think i should do?

That doesn't sound like a troll at all, just someone very ignorant and uh, stupid. It's completely natural to associate bronies with stuff like that, since to be honest, the news haven't been nice to us - Fox News has insulted us several times, the Howard Stern show, several documentaries show us in a bad light...

However, he did get something right. If you don't care what people think about you being a brony, why argue with him? Shrug it off, it doesn't matter what he thinks.

I frequently edit my new posts to fix grammatical errors or to reword stuff, so sorry if I make it look like I'm forging my messages to change the meaning of anyone's replies or something.

This is the problem with being a brony. You're going to face necessary hate and abuse from people who are too immature to accept the fact that a large collection of people like a TV show, and as such want to share their love of the subject matter, ponies, with people who have similar interests. Most people these days try their hardest to stick to the social norms, and find people that are fine with being different weird or stupid. But in truth, they're the stupid ones. The world is close minded, and so you're always going to have somebody telling you that you're a freak or that you're gay or something like that because of the fact that you like My Little Pony. The best thing you can do is ignore the hate and try to rise above the immaturity of others. Oh, and the fact that for every hater you come across you'll have ten more bronies ready to show you support and kindness helps too. Keep that in mind.

Whoever said that to you is obviously just looking for trouble.

Honestly, just ignore him. Try posting more memes and other parts of your bronyism, and I'm sure that not only will you recieve a lot of likes, but prove that person wrong too. Being a brony requires a lot of patience, so you always gotta be ready for those insults by others. I'm pretty sure that guy hasn't even watched the show yet. Try telling him to at least watch the show, and if he doesn't, then just tell him that he's judging you for something he doesn't even know about.

Just deal with it, or (although most bronies find this annoying) love and tolerate. :) I'm sure he'll come around eventually, or at least respect your bronyism.

I really don't post about it on facebook and i wanted to do it one day since i think it would be intresting to see the reaction since i have a lot of family on there and a lot of friends who are not "geeks" so they probably wouldn't get it. But i agree with all of you 100% it's just that he annoyed me with his smart-ass comments and bashing.

My motto and my signature is my advice. "Its only an insult if you let it be one" That means its only gonna be an insult if you let the insult affect you. Don't let any negativity affect you. Don't let what other people say get to ur brain. Don't get upset, don't get mad. Cuz if you do, they win. Thats what they would wnat to see from you. They want that "insult" to affect you negatively. Don't let it. Bash away the insults everyone gives you. If you do that then you win. "He who angers you, conquers you". I forget who said that quote but i heard someone use it before.

There will always be close minded and ignorant people. There are many people in the world like that. As long as you know the truth. You know Bronies aint none of that, u know not all Bronies are "gross" and anything else those stupid stereotypes say. As long as you know that, then whats it matter what people say. Let them hate you in there ignorance. Let them be immature. There words won' affect you. It doens't matter what anyone says. There will always be people who don't like, there will always be people who would insult you and say bad things. But none of that matters. As long as you are you and you know the truth, thats all that matters.

As for that stupid "smart ass comment". Dude that was stupid comment in my opinion not even one a smart alek would say. We shower cuz we like to be clean not because we care what people think of us. The guy is an idiot. Just cuz you don't tell people something that doesn't mean u care what they think. Its just mean u would rather keep it to yourself. Why the hell would u spew out everything about you? Thats the most stupid thing ever to do. I don't care what people think of me but u don't see me telling everyone i'm a brony or other stuff about myself.

Point is, don't let any hater get to you, don't let any of the stupid insults or "smart ass comments" get to your head man. U don't have to tell the world your a brony, but if u want to post it on Facebook, hell whats stoping you? A couple people whos gonna bag on you? Pfft. So? Chances are most people who read your status aint even gonna know what that is. Many people who i know don't lol.

I found the best way is to embrace it :)

You like MLP, there is nothing wrong with this, and I've found that if you own it and show the hater's you don't care what they say then in the end people just don't care and they leave you alone.

People in life are always looking to hurt you and find your weakness, if you don't let anything become your weakness then people leave you alone because they can't hurt you.

and if all else fails:

Spam his wall with MLP!

lol. So your friend takes showers only because he worries that people won't like him? If he could get away with it he would roll around in the dirt and pig dung all day? But yeah, deleting the status kinda proved his point that you do care

Personally I just do what I do. I don't tell people about myself unless they ask or it just comes up if I'm doing whatever

It was kind of like my own campaign to break stereotypes, and most people generally know me as a weird person (If you've met me, you would know that i am a star wars and movie fan) I have even posted on facebook my action figure collection (Ok, not very huge, but getting there) and got postive feedback for it, i just thought people would think, "hmm, intresting, I'll look it up" that kind of thing.

@@Sierraman, just suppress the rage and forgive, for they do not understand.

I had supposed "friend" that disavowed me after saying I like MLP. Coward censored me on all fronts. It was tough, but we had verbal confrontation over Xbox Live (I hate that) and it was finished. I had a few friends behind me that said he was wrong for what he did, which I'm glad about, knowing you're not alone can mean alot.

If you saw his face, you would know he's a punk ass Swag Fag (No offense to Gay people intended).

But like I said, it's over, and I forgive him because he is ignorant and doesn't understand. He's a very narrow-minded person.

That is a good war of words. But if that happened to me, I would ask him where he lives, so I could deliver him a punch sandwhich in the face.

That's how I usually deal with trolls here in the neighbourhood.

Eh, if he was acting like that then he really isn't someone you should care about. Not much of a friend. Just ignore him. And if he wants to continue to be an asshole, be smart. Either ignore him or make it clear that you don't give a shit about what he says or thinks. You shouldn't be ashamed to be a brony just because of the stereotypes people give us. You know they aren't true, and that's all that matters.

I had this almost same experience when I became a Brony. The best thing to do is just ignore them.If they keep treating you like trash a few days later.Block them forever (If it's on facebook).Other than that.Ignore

Edit:It's not worth fighting with those kind of people.

I agree, i'll think i will post the status again with it blocked from him, it's fine if he didn't like the show, but he didn't learn the "agree to disagree" rule. I hate twilight but i don't go on other people's stati who like twilight bashing the fandom and saying it's gross.

I've had similar experiences. I was pretty much harassed by someone in school because they disliked bronies, but now that I think about it I was kinda a rabid brony back then so idk.

Really that doesn't sound like a troll, it's just some ignorant bigot that doesn't know any better but to listen to stereotypes.

The most ironic thing about the whole thing is this: He is gay, Not that i care about that, i don't hate gay people at all, but he blasts me for "liking a show made for little girls" and he's gay, sooooo......

No offense, but have you ever heard of a period? I've seen run-on sentences, I've seen amazingly long run-on sentences, but this... This tops them all.

Hmm... I think they're thinking about the wrong generation. They must be thinking about G3.

But if you encounter a troll, here's what you do, You ether ignore him/her, or be kind about it. But the worst thing you can do is argue about it (I saw that you did that in the post.). So just be calm and don't get your jimmies rustled. Because whenever this would happen to me, I would say:

Bad way to spill it if you feel you must, I just changed my pic to Big Mac and started sharing pony stuff. If you make a big deal out of it other people will too.

A lot of you make very good points. I am not gonna shove it down everybody's throats and i thought arguing about it was a bit of a bad idea. I just wanted to tell people i was a brony, of course, that doesn't mean i will change my profile picture or cover picture to twilight sparkle or pinkie pie. I just thought i'd tell people that i like the show.

You have to do it in a subtle way, share a song or scene you like instead of just blurting it out like it's a big deal. That's what I did.

Troll: In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2]extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

This is not a troll you're dealing with. It's just a general hater.
