My Little Brony Adventure

Okay, so I thought I'd retell a story I look back on as humorous. It happened fairly recently, a few months ago to be exact. The story also shows just how stubborn a friend of mine is (I'll call him "Jack" for this story) in his hatred of the fandom (no, he hasn't seen the show yet).

Okay, so to start off, as part of a choir group I'm in, we had the opportunity to meet an a cappella group coming to perform at our school. We had the opportunity to see them perform twice, once for a small presentation for the choir and band members, as well as students from local schools, and once where they put on an actual concert in the evening.

At the afternoon performance, we had the opportunity to ask them questions. You can probably guess where I'm going from here, I really wanted to ask them if any of them are bronies. Unfortunately, I couldn't do it for the possible embarassment that could follow, so I passed up the opportunity. Luckily, they said they had an e-mail, so, after my curiousity finally got the better of me, I asked if any of them are bronies. They replied later that day after school, saying that yes, they are all bronies, especially their sound person, referring to him as the "brony king". I took it for what it was, and started thinking about what to do next. As luck would have it, that hater friend of mine "Jack" was also going to be an usher at the concert that night, so I prepared myself for what I would say to him...

The concert arrived sooner than I expected, and I was off to see the group perform one more time, as well as get a bit of mileage in on my friend (insert trolllface here). Upon arriving, however, I was told he was going to be late due to a previous engagement, so I was taken by another friend of mine, also an usher, to the seats.

Now's probably a good time to mention that, for all of you who haven't heard about how "mature" my friends are, here's the basics of it, three of my friends had a class discussion about how bronies have "serious problems" and this friend of mine, "Jack" said that "all bronies are immature faggots". Irony aside, I was offended that he would say something like that to his best friend (The full article: http://mlpforums.com/topic/34714-a-bit-worried-today-edit/). But now, I knew something he didn't know: The a cappella group he loves is entirely made up of bronies (stuff like that affects his liking of music and the like for some reason).

Anyways, so this other friend of mine, "Jason" I'll call him, was one of the people present at that lovely conversation I previously mentioned. I remember him saying that basically everything "Jack" has said was exactly what "Jason" was thinking (I'd told him not to judge me for liking MLP, I guess we know how well that worked out), so I was on similar terms with him. I asked him if he liked the group, which he did, and then I asked him if he thought they were all "immature faggots", and, of course, he said no. I then said, "Really? Because they're all bronies." He seemed somewhat surprised, but accepted it with a simple "Okay then."

So the concert is about half-way into it's first part (it was a two-parter), and I heard the group doing an arrangement of songs from "The Lion King", which my friend "Jack" is obsessed over (I mean, his ringtone is "The Circle of Life"). Anyways, so after silently hoping that he isn't missing any of it, the song ends and I go outside to see if he's there. Luckily, he was there, looking happier than ever. After we discussed how awesome the arrangement was, I asked him the same question I'd asked "Jason", if he thought the group was just a bunch of "immature faggots".

He looked shocked that I'd even think that, and replied very assuringly, "No!". I then, with a bit of a smug face, responded, as with "Jason", "Really? Because they're all bronies!". He then gave me a cheesy smile and said between his teeth, "No they're not.". I said "Yes they are, and I have proof." I then showed him the E-mails exchanged between the group and I and added "See? They are bronies." In my friend's stunning ignorance, he replied "Or, maybe they looked at this and said 'ha! what a freak, let's play along with him'!". I responded "Do you really think they'd tell me this if they weren't serious? I mean, I could post it up on their Facebook wall and 'embarass' them with a picture of the e-mail as proof." He seemed convinced of it, so I asked him, “What do you think of them now?” He responded, “Kind of dissapointing.” I was frustrated at this, and after I sighed, I asked him, shaking my head sadly, "You just don't have any respect for bronies do you?" He didn't respond to me, he just looked off at the wall to the side of me in an oh-so-threatening way and shook his head. He then told/sang me to "Sail away, sail away, sail away" with a scooting gesture.

I left and went to my good friend "Scott", the best non-brony I know (Think of him like a real life 'Good Guy Greg'). I told him about how they're all bronies and he thought it was awesome, so that restored some faith in mankind.

After the concert, however, things changed. I actually got to meet the members themselves, hoping for some brony-to-brony conversation, but they all responded that they were joking with the e-mail because they couldn't figure out what a "brony" is after checking the entire dictionary (I think the problem was the lack of "urban" in the title), so they just said they were.

The problem is that I'd sent them an e-mail earlier asking them about the situation I'd detailed above, and how they explained their liking of the show. So...yeah. It was kind of awkward. They did respond to my e-mail, though, saying that they didn't know if I was serious, but that it was "perfectly ok to be a brony", then showed one of their members at the local Hot Topic trying on some of the brony clothing. I'd also told a close closet-pegasister friend of mine that they're all bronies, so she was dissapointed when I told her about them telling me they aren't. Oh well, though.

The good thing is that my friend "Jack" doesn't know they aren't really bronies, and I kind of like it that way. It's nice for him to have some good people in mind when he thinks of bronies.

Well, that's my story for the day. Thoughts?

I feel really sorry for your friend i think ppl need to learn to respect diffrent "tastes". if you really like being a Brony then your friends or anybody else's statement shouldn't matter i really hate to say it but a true friend should have respect to you being a Brony. Frankly i don't even care what ppl think anymore yesterday I wore a rainbow dash shirt while at a deli and i guess some ppl thought it was funny because they started snickering i just took my meat and  kept walking with my head held high. If liking a show that teaches ppl about friendship and caring is wrong I guess I don't want to be right.Posted Image

Most of my friends sound like your friend "Jack", sans such severe name-calling. It isn't fair of him to make such judgments, but really, what can you or I or anyone do to change his mind? In the end, to him, it is all a matter of his own perspective.

On a side note (not really), A CAPPELLA WOO. I was starting to think I was the only fan of a cappella anymore. Posted Image

That is quite sad that your friends make such sweeping statements without any real knowledge. My friends know I am and to be honest don't actually care. To me the attitude of Jack and Jason is, funnily enough, very immature and also very disrespectful.

Liking a childs cartoon isn't immature, and niether is disliking them what is immature is insulting someone because they like a show.

You're not the only fan in the slightest, I love a Capella now! Anyways, thanks for the advice. The only thing that could really change his opinion would be to show him MLP, of course, but that could really go one of three ways:

1) He loves the show and becomes a brony, most likely a closet one (It's not impossible, but I question how likely this is).

2) He becomes indifferent to the show; it's not his favorite but he sees why others like it and accepts it (Which is perfectly fine in my book).

3) He sees reason the hate the fandom and show and can go full on hater, telling those "friends" of mine, and really anyone else for that matter, that he did watch the show and hates it with a passion. Really, I'd have only given fuel to the fire (I'm worried this would be the most likely outcome).

He has said he does want to see the show, whether for malicious intent or not remains to be seen, honestly. The reason being that he has been wrong before. Not to bring up the conversation again, but in it, he also brought up hating Minecraft (I really like the game but he said, at first glance, that it was stupid). A few months later, he played it for one hour at my house and got hooked on it.

Here's the thing, though, which really only proves that I can't begin to comprehend the inner workings of his mind, upon asking, he did tell me that he played Minecraft with an open mind, not with the intent of hating it like I thought. So I guess that raises the likeliness of the former two outcomes slightly? I don't know. All I know is I'll show him the show when he's ready, and for that I'm thinking "Sonic Rainboom". Who knows, we may have another brony soon.
