Maybe she slacked off for a while and was out of practice. My biggest question is, if she can do that why does she still make Spike put her books away? It would be faster and she wouldn't have to worry about the poor kid falling off a ladder (again). Yeah, I don't really have anything for the central question. We haven't really ever had much consistency with what is difficult and what is easy magically. Apples to oranges? Tricky. Reversing gravity? Piece of cake.

Maybe she slacked off for a while and was out of practice. Now I really want to see someone make a video showing this, it would be interesting to see the plot holes. Also in let's say the episode Lesson Zero, in one scene we can see Rarity picking up multiple pieces of ribbon and cutting them with scissors. As we know Rarity isn't the best when it comes to magic (assumed by the fact that she doesn't constantly study) so it seems like being able to levitate multple items and move them around shouldn't be to difficult. Then there's also the fact of how much you practice one spell, if you practice one spell a lot you will be better at it and it will be easier to preform. Take this quote “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times” -Bruce Lee. So maybe Twilight just hadn't practiced the spell a lot so she isn't that good with it (even though as pointed out by the person I quoted she has levitated her entire library at once before) but as far as we can assume, living organisms are harder to levitate then inanimate objects (if there are no plot holes). 2 This is a signature. It would be faster and she wouldn't have to worry about the poor kid falling off a ladder (again). She often seems to have no idea where anything is. Spike may be there to keep things organized. Reshelving day was probably necessary because she put some things back herself a few times and was no longer able to find anything. That's the best explanation I can come up with. But... how can she be that disorganized when she has Spike make redundant lists, triple-check them, and personally oversees Winter Wrap-Up in a foreign town so that they finished on schedule for the first time in years? The mind boggles. We haven't really ever had much consistency with what is difficult and what is easy magically. Apples to oranges? Tricky. Reversing gravity? Piece of cake. I'm not so sure that reversing or nullifying gravity would be any more or less difficult than transmutation. Then again, I'm not a unicorn... MatrixChicken 879 December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 I guess I thought it was obvious. It was for entertainment purposes for the delegates from Saddle Arabia. It does seem odd that she would have to practice such a small task, but I'm sure she didn't want to make ANY mistakes. 1 Deviantart: MatrixChicken | Youtube: ThunderFilmStudios | Twitter: @JohnAlBerge Twitch.tv: ThunderFilms | Soundcloud: ScootriX Scootaloo vector by robzombiefan2121

That's a fair point about her not knowing where everything is, but as you said it does seem a bit strange for Ms. Organization not to know where her books go. Eh, I'll wave it off and say that even Twilight has limits. Part of me just wants to say that gravity reversal seems instinctively more difficult, but yeah I suppose that it could be the other way around. Spring Storm 276 December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 As others have said, it could have been the precision with which she moved the animals that made the trick impressive. I'd like to add that it wasn't outright stated that the levitation trick was the only thing she did for the delegates - it might have been a warm-up routine, followed by even more impressive tricks afterwords. 1 Together since October 19th, 2011
Princes Cadance 345 December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 I can see where you are coming from but I think it was just a trick to show how good at magic Twilight was getting, clearly making animals fly in a figure 8 or whatever is hard
pinkieshyrose 58 December 4, 2012 Share December 4, 2012 she just practiced magic like she was doing in to many pinkies just with somthing more delicate ( flutershys animals) then she used it again to show princess celestia for some type of preformance in saddle arabia Pinkie Pie : "And that's how Equestria was made!" Pinkie Pie : "who turned off the moon? dont go near that cake theif! stop theif! oh are you ok theif"? http://pinkeshyrose.deviantart.com/ my da account
Dusty Soul 2,612 December 5, 2012 Share December 5, 2012 The first time I watched it I thought it was rather dumb, but then I realized its not her trying to levitate one animal its multiple animals at once. Genepool 224 December 5, 2012 Share December 5, 2012 I'll approach this from a sort of "logic" standpoint and say the reason Twilight was having difficulty was due to her use of control. We saw the so-called "yoda scene" where she's levitating the three orbs of water around her, slowly, while standing on top of the pond. Think many of us remember the Empire Strikes Back scene with Luke carefully and cautiously putting the rock down onto the next to maintain flow. In my opinion, the reason Twilight struggled was due to the fact she had to use a very "precise" amount of control. It's only after her training with Zecora that she doesn't seem to be sweating. To give a better idea of what i'm thinking, visualize an EXTREMELY powerful robotic arm that you want to be dexterous. You want to pick up a fragile crystal rose and put it into a container without breaking it. Twilight is the robotic arm where she's levitating the animals around. Books, apples, and such are easy to levitate since you can use a normal amount of force. But having to control how much magic you use when levitating woodland creatures is another. Only thing I do find strange though is her struggling to catch the apple cart, barrels and apples when she levitated an entire orchard during the AppleBuck Season episode. However, I will play devils advocate saying the potential reason she struggled was due to the forward inertia + mass of the cart and barrels. Levitating an object that is at rest probably doesn't take a huge toll on a user, but stopping a cart that weighs 100 to 200lb+ and the objects that were in said cart probably takes a good amount of magic. Final speculation i'll make is who's to say Princess Celestia didn't ask Twilight to perform a specific spell. All we hear is that Celestia entrusted Twilight with the entertainment for the festivities. There's a good bit of theory to be had behind things. Perhaps the delegates from Saddle Arabia don't like overly fancy/opulent displays, prefering elegant, smooth flowing shows. Anyways, just my two thoughts about the whole thing.
