Alright, so today I showed my friend the first episode of MLP, hes a brony now, and then I told him about the fandom and stuff, and this is the awesome part:

Right after I showed it to him, he walked right up to his mom and said he watched MLP! I havent even told my parents, and Ive been in this fandom for 6 months! She was all confused and started saying random stuff like "so youre watching bronies?" Me: *facehoof* and then "well Im not buying any ponies so you can paint their hooves and do their hair!" Me: *another facehoof*

Sooo I guess she took it pretty lightly, and then she'll probably tell my mom because they are friends... Still, my mom will probably get the confusing version :P

Well I thought I would let you guys know

Well, I'm sorry. It might just be best to come clean with your parents. Just tell them you watch the show and that it's no big deal. I think that'll be easier than them finding out from your friend's mom.

YAY FOR MOAR CONVERSION!

Depending on how conservative your parents are, I would suggest thinking about telling them now. Mine took it amusingly and still don't quite get it, but they know I'm a weird bastard so I don't think they were suprised.

There are certainly far worse things you could be admitting to your mom. :)  (Like "I just slept with someone" or "I did a drug" or "I just crashed your car".)

Eh. If your parents are uberconservative then coming out as a brony could be equivalent to coming out of the closer, and some families disown their kids for that (Though this probably isn't the case here)

It doesn't sound like that bad of a situation. Everything will probably work out alright. At least you got a friend who shares your interest and a funny story out of this whole situation :P

at worst she thinks you buy bronies to paint in order to worship George.

Wait...We don't do that? Why didn't anyone tell me!?  :( ....

I have a hard time thinking that even uber-conservative parents would have a problem with Friendship is Magic - what's the worst element about it?  That there's some form of magic?  There's absolutely no unwarranted violence, it has great family values, and it teaches kids a lot of things that most of the "far right" have been trying to cram down our throats for decades anyway.  It just does it well and in a (mostly) non-condescending manner.

Because they see their son watching a girly show, and so he MUST be gay. and since this couple of thousand year old book written by who the hell knows called the bible says being gay is wrong, they must disown him.

People will always find a way to get angry about everything, regardless of whether or not doing do makes any sense at all. For example. when I was a kid, I had a friend whose parents were fundamentalist Christians and he thought he was being sneaky and rebellious for watching Lord of the Rings with me and some other friends one time. People are crazy, and parents can be even more crazy sometimes.

What someone does in their personal time is

up to them in truth.  II don't think its a big deal

how or what fandom your part of should impact

how ppl see from parents to friends.  Hell, I've been

a anime fan from age 9......

Now yes I'm part of the MLP fandom but I won't put

a label on myself,  i just enjoy the fandom and shows.

Yeah, I'll grant you that there are parents out there who are just plain crazy.  But then, if they really are so controlling, there are still far worse things going on than that their son or daughter is chatting on a message board about a cartoon. :P

I hold out hope. :)

Well parents can get a little crazy simply because they don't understand or they don't want to understand.

Hopefully thing go well for you.

In anycase at lest you have a brony freind that ou can chat with.

That's always a nice thing to have.

I've told a lot of people. Actually it gets pretty fun to watch their reactions, but hey I'm a 26 former Marine, etc.. I have no problem liking this show and being open about it, pretty secure in my masculinity lol

Lol I've had this on my mind now I can use it... No worries mate! I don't blame you. My sister still finds it weird for me to like, but she never seen the new series so can't blame her for her concerns. I'll just be ballin ballin

Guys Im just saying that my friend was pretty brave for just going up to his mom and telling her the second the first episode was done. And normally bronies try and keep it a secret at first.

And I'm not hiding it from my parents, they just haven't seen me watching it yet, Im not going to make a huge deal like out of all the worst possible things that could happen, this is THE! WORST! POSSIBLE! THING! :P And sit the whole family down and have an hour long talk about something before getting to the point. I'm really just waiting until they see me watching it or something MLP:FiM/brony comes up in conversation, or something else, I'm not really scared, just watching an amazing show...

thanks for the support..... I mainly keep it secret because How am i going to explain to my Mother that her college educated son, whom is the only semi-normal kid she ever had, watches a show meant for little girls and their mothers?..... And dont even get me started on how my Dad would react..... I gurantee i would be disowned right then and there....

Yes he's pretty open-minded, and (I don't take advantage of this) he's pretty easily manipulated, thats kind of how I got him to watch MLP:FiM, again I don't take advantage of this. That would be called being a bad friend :( I don't want to be labeled "the bad friend", or labeled at all. I just asked if he wanted to watch it and he said sure. So I didn't really manipulate him, just asked a simple question. And he was bored. Though I cant really talk about MLP with him because he doesn't have Netflix. He watched it on my laptop. Luckily I have another brony friend, and he just finished S1, must wait until he finishes S2 and 3...

Also, sorry I quoted the whole post, I'm on a phone, and have no idea how to snip it on a phone :P

I don't see why it would matter, telling your parents. It's not like you're smoking weed, or pregnant or anything.

I mean, c'mon, it's a TV show. It would be like if I went to my dad and said "Hey Dad, I play minecraft/halo/Cod/insertwhateverhere!"

He would probably just be thinking "Ok, why in the hell does he think I would care?"

But I can understand wanting to tell people. It stems from a psychological desire to have people fully understand you and approve of everything you do.

But your mom probably won't care, either way.

It saddens me to see so many having to hide MLP. :/ I honestly didn't even realize that was a thing until I started talking to other bronies.

I guess being a girl does have its advantages in the fandom...at most I do feel awkward sometimes being a pegasister in my mid-20s. I get the reverse effect sometimes where I've had male teen bronies make me feel like an outsider...as if MLP was meant for girls but being a brony is only meant for young guys.
