Twilight may become MORE POWERFUL than her friends.

She already is, she arguably has been since the end of season 2 Twilight is the element of magic which is the power of all the other elements put together so her becoming an alicorn eventually did make sense but the way it was done as well as the fact that it was so abrupt and premature puts a very enormous risk on her as a character which if not addressed could make her so stupidly overpowered that she becomes a Mary Sue. Having the main character be more powerful than the others is not a bad thing as long as it is believable and actually makes sense which so far unfortunately does not apply to twilicorn but as disastrous as the introduction there is still a possibility of a turn around in season 4.

Yeah, I pretty much forgot about the power she already possessed.

But making her a princess emphasized it way too much, in my opinion.

I think even if she does become overpowered and not have time for her friends, her friends might get mad. Then Twilight might realize what is happening and try to stop it. I think that would be a great thing for Twilight to face. Friends come before power.

I personally don't think it's going to make that much of a difference. I mean, she's already hugely talented with magic as it is. She can teleport wherever she wants, she doesn't even really need the wings. My thinking is that they'll probably play the alicorn thing down a bit, unless they have a very specific storyline that requires her to be an alicorn.

She might have very skilled magical abilities and she will be able to learn more abilities, but she will not become overpowered at all. If she was, there wouldn't be a purpose of having villains face Twilight and the Mane 6 all of the time.

@@Commander_PonyShep,

Hello there. We already happened to have a topic for speculating on how powerful Twilight will be as an Alicorn, and as your topic was related to speculating whether Twilight will be powerful enough to negatively impact the plot of the series, they were extrememely similar. These threads have been merged together, and your question has been added to the title of the original thread.

Normal Ponies < Twilight < Other Alicorns

I think the only alicorn she could have a tiny chance against is Cadance. Celestia and Luna are basically gods, while Twilight is an actual princess.

She won't. Not immediately, anyway.

She had pretty much reached the limits for a normal unicorn. There was nowhere left for her to go without something serious happening. Becoming an Alicorn has likely opened up her potential, so there is now room for further growth. But that doesn't mean she's automatically more powerful that she was before, just that her *potential* has increased.

If she hadn't gone alicorn, there have been hints in the show that there were other options for increasing potential. Sombra, for instance, seemed to have broken past the unicorn limit using dark magic, and was physically altered by it as well. There were hints that *something* happened to Starswirl, with the possibility that the various spells (time travel, cutie-mark re-arrangement) were all his attempts to fix it. And in the comics, there are the Nightmare thingies. Meaning that out of the various options available, Alicorn may have been the best one.

That's been my head canon for a long time: he underwent some great personal tragedy, and all those fate-changing spells were his attempts to "fix it". That's why he was so grumpy and didn't make any friends: too focused on that.

Anyway, on-topic, it's hard to gauge this. The best indicator of alicorn power is their ability to move celestial bodies, but unicorns could already do that.

I still think she's Overpowered either way, but way more important than that, she became a Mary Sue, which in my opinion, is worse.

...Wow. Twilight has been an alicorn for roughly five minutes of screentime, and you're already calling her a Mary Sue? Okay, so she didn't seem to show any weaknesses after she transformed, but that was because pretty much all that time was spent being inaugurated as a princess. Gaining wings and a royal title does not make her a Mary Sue. Wait for a few Season 4 episodes to come out before making such a claim.

I doubt she will be overpowered. In her hot minute video, we saw her struggling to fly. Plus Twilight wants to learn and learn, so there will have to be things that she'll not be able to do. Plus it's technically impossible for her to be perfect because like how numbers are infinite, you can always add 1 to make her previous milestone seem laughable.

Let's look at this reasonably.  Yeah, Celestia is insanely powerful, but she's had over 1,000 years of practice.  Luna isn't quite that powerful.  She's magically tallented, that's for sure; but no more so than Twilight (not significantly, at least).  Same with Cadence.  Her magical powers are on par with that of her husband's.

And how about King Sombra?  He went up against Celestia and Luna and was able to put them at a stalemate.  They managed to turn him into shadow (that's a pretty lame curse, actually), but he was able to take the Crystal Empire down with him.  And Sombra was a Unicorn that dabled in dark magic, which both Celestia and Luna did too!

All evidence shows that alicorns are no more magical than unicorns.  The only things they can do that unicorns cannot are fly, walk on clouds, and whatever it is that Earth Ponies got over them. derpy_emoticon2.png
