Spike is basically her son the way I see it. As far as Babycakes goes, Twilight was hinting that Pinkie has some kind of mental disorder and isn't well equipped to handle kids like her. Why else do you think Pinks got so offended and threw her out?

I don't think Twilight was hinting at that but Pinkie Pie may have reacted that way because she misinterpreted it as that. It sounds more like Twilight was probably remarking more about her maturity level as Pinkie Pie tends to treat nearly everything like a game and while it is important for babies development to play with them Twilight was trying to tell Pinkie Pie that it is not all fun and games. Pinkie Pie even said at the end of the episode that she thought it would just mean more play time so Twilight's concern was well founded as I don't believe was meant at all to be disrespectful. Though if she hinted at a disorder though she wouldn't be far off as Pinkie Pie might have ADHD though half the problem might be the insane amount of sugar she consumes.

Twilight didn't mean she wanted a baby she meant exactly what she said! Babies are alot of work and some people can't handle the responsibility.

Can you really blame her? I mean with how long lines are at the Ponyville sperm bank and the fact that making the baby the old fashioned way is a lot more fun.

Well, I think she might just want to take care of someone, and she's got Spike for that. It's not so much as wanting a baby, as it is being confident that she could do it.
