Canon from the show itself: King Sombra for example, I think he was basically the same mind set as the dark lord Sauron. Twilight did mention war in one episode, so it could mean the Ponies had a terrible bloody war a long time ago.

 

Also Multiverse theory if true mean's there's an elitist fascist version out there of our lovely Ponies, that commit xenocide on entire sapient species simply because they think they are better and wish to 'save them'.

That all said it is questionable if there really is a such thing as Good or Evil, depends on one's point of view I guess. Everything could be just shades of grey.

   I do, as well, believe that ponies can also be as evil as humans. They are practically humans in different bodies. As you said, King Sombra is an example of that, whether or not he was purely evil, or he was corrupted somehow (whatever your headcanon is).

Unfortunately,  if multiverse theory is indeed true mean. There are such unreasonable monster versions of the MLP:FiM Ponies out there.

I have yet to see any atomic weapons be used in Equestria or mass murder of any kind, so, ponies win. Sure, there are some dastardly villains there, such as Sombra and Chrysalis, but they seem to be a lot more interested in just enslavement. So they are a step there I suppose.

Well I don't think they are going to show something like mass killings or anything along those lines in canon show. *gives FOE sigh*

 

However, *comma* indirectly they have "hinted" to darker moments and items such as armor and jousting lances were once needed for something other then recreation.

 

And they do have some semblance of a military in the form of the royal guards/wonder bolts.

 

These things would not be needed if there wasn't a need for protection of some sorts.

Well, considering that enslavement is one of the darkest moments in US history (only the deaths of the native population is even comparable) I'm not sure that ponies "win". 

 

Also consider that if Nightmare Moon's everlasting night succeeded, the entire population would have either died of starvation or frozen to death.

I guess they're able to be evil because they all have free will, but they don't really poses the tech to destroy the world.

 

Although I suppose they have enslavement.

 

I think the reason things seem so happy in Equestria is because we never see the dark side of things. Or rather not all of it in the day to day life of the ponies.

 

I don't see any reason why the ponies couldn't be evil if they wanted, just maybe they don't have the tech to do as much idk.

 

Maybe they're just more kindhearted by nature, I have no idea really. Still I'd say ponies tend to be nicer majority wise atleast.
