planning Expressions of interest for a beginners RP group

Hey all,

So I had this idea to start up a role play for people who are beginners in RP to help encourage/teach people how to RP and make OC's etc. I think a lot of people hold back from joining a RP worried they won't be good enough, or that people will think they are stupid or whatever, so if we had a group where we KNEW people were beginners, hopefully they'd have a go. Experienced Role players also welcome to join with the expectation they will be willing to help the newer RPers improve using OOC comments in brackets where needed, but being FAIR and respectful.

Rules:

Meh. I hate rulez!

basically have fun and be willing to learn. Don't worry if you make 'mistakes" cuz that is what the rp will be there to help you avoid when you feel ready to advance to more advanced role plays. Be tolerant of other people's mistakes if they make them.

Suggestions:

1. Avoid making Alicorns. Most RP threads don't like them as they get over powered.

2. Avoid being orphans.... It just seems to happen TOO much and is a sign of a mary -sue / mary-Stu character. (Which means they are a cheesy character) Everypony seems to be an orphan!

3. ...Avoid telling other people what their OC;s think, do or feel. Can do it to a very small extent but not a lot as people will want to write their own reactions to things.

4. Avoid sayings out of genre that would not fit into the MLP series. Such as... don't talk about your favorite sports team, the computer crashing, or how much you enjoy spiderman movies. (Unless you are role playing a crazy pony, or one that fell through a time warp or something)

5. Playing one of the main 6 is fine in this role play but please know the character well!

So if you are interested please make a post here, I have not thought up a back story but I will think of something and we will start there and let the rest flow.

it will be set in ponyville at first but we could possibly be pilgrims traveling to settle a new town some place else.

Mike.

I'll definitely consider joining, not too much into role-play really, but if it'd be n00b-safe then I'd at least give it some thought.

Hmm. I have been reading the rules and I would just like to give my two bits on them, and what I think they should be E.T.C.

1: Alicorns are commonly seen as being OP in the forums but that doesn't mean you have to avoid making them. Some Alicorns can be quite the opposite, fully normal, or designed to be OP. This, combined with the fact that you can have as many OCs as you want, essentially mean that you can create an Alicorn however you want. It's your OC after all.

2: A mary sue or gary sue) is commonly seen as a "perfect character" Or basically, an OC that is simply too perfect. weather it be strength, personality or looks; if they get all the women and can solve any problem with a click of their hands/hoofs, then they are a mary sue. Being an orphan would not make them this, it is just a common things for OCs along with having a troubed past , abusive parents and all that jazz. This does not make it bad though, simply generic. If your OC is a ponysona (meaning they look and behave like you, but they're a pony) and you have these troubles then it is ALWAYS forgiven.

3: this rule is essential. It is the rule of "no godmodding". This is when you, or your OC/s decide events in the roleplay, other characters actions or their behavior and emotions without their permission. This means you cannot say "suddenly, A wild dragon attacks Canterlot!" unless the owner of the rp says "Yeah sure, I'm OK with that." This rule is always essential as it can ruin the rolpay entirely.

4: This one I feel has been worded wrong. Seeing as how your roleplays can be about anything, having them fit within the MLP world just means that they are ponies. If the rolaplay is humans only then it is not set within the MLP world. the rest kinda makes no sense :l

5:nothing wrong here. Perfectly legit.

And now to the roleplay. Seeing as how the vast majority of roleplayers here will be new, the best category for this roleplay will be "Slice of life" or "SoL". These are roleplays that simply take place within an average time span of a pony, and that essentially means it will be just a regular time. no Explosions no war to gory messes. Just a regular time. It would also be better to have romance be a thing. This will mean that, if you want to, you can have a bit of love and whatnot occur. whether this be the primary focus or just something you can do if you wish is up to you.

and lastly, before I put my OC here, You still have to follow forum rules. No r34 content, no insulting each other eccesivley E.T.C

And here she is!

Roleplaying looks and sounds fun but I haven't the slightest idea on how it works... I read the rules and a few guides, but I have never participated. I think I'd like to give it a try!

I have been reading the rules

Thank you for your clarifications and suggestions. However, the above were NOT rules... they were listed as suggestions. Suggestions are advice that can be used or not used in a role play. I made suggestion's' to give people an idea of what I was looking for in an OC for this particular role play. Lets go through the again to clarify what I was saying.

1: Alicorns are commonly seen as being OP

1. Avoid making Alicorns.

So my suggestion was AVOID making Alicorns for this role play... not saying for EVERY role play.  I do realize that some Alicorns will be ok in a RP. Avoid doesn't mean don't do at all.

2: A mary sue or gary sue) is commonly seen as a "perfect character" Or basically, an OC that is simply too perfect.

Yep I agree with this. Once again i suggested it as an avoid making orphans, not a don't do at all. Reason I mentioned it is I see it so often, and it's listed as one of the signs of the mary sue.

3: this rule is essential. It is the rule of "no godmodding".

I think we agree on this one, Thans for adding more info to it. I tried to word it in a way that non role players would hopefully understand since the term Godmodding might be confusing.

4: This one I feel has been worded wrong. Seeing as how your roleplays can be about anything,

Yes I'm far from perfect and may not always word things that well. I also get tired.

You are very correct that a role play can be about anything., however these suggestions were for THIS role play... not every role play on the boards... just this one in particular which may or may not go ahead at the moment. I'm not a moderator of the entire board and would never claim rules across the board

5:nothing wrong here. Perfectly legit.

Nothing really to add to that.

It would also be better to have romance be a thing.

yes Romance would for sure be included as I've found that it's hard to avoid in role plays in general... and I love romance myself so would welcome it

You still have to follow forum rules. No r34 content, no insulting each other eccesivley E.T.C

Naturally. Thank you for reminding us of that. Those rules are true for EVERY role play out there including this one

So in closing. I'm sorry if my suggestions confused you in any way. If you think this RP is for you the you are welcome to submit an application for it. As I said earlier, it MAY not happen as I'm tied up elsewhere at the moment, and have an idea for a more advanced RP I'd like to start. There would have to be enough interest and committed people for me to start this one,, which so far, there doesn't seem to be. I only opened this up as I wanted to help people who wanted to learn to role play but were too nervous to try.
